If I have a complaint about this season premiere, it’s that it could have easily been (and probably should have been) last season’s finale. Lots of denouement and cooling off that is usually reserved for an Episode 10 that follows a shocking climax in Episode 9.

Jaime arrives home with Myrcella’s body and commiserates with Cersei, who *thought* she was just put through her greatest hell. The two plot revenge against EVERYONE, as Norman Stansfield might say, and I’m sorry but I ain’t feeling sympathy for these two anytime soon.

Speaking of Myrcella, when news of her death reaches Prince Doran back in Dorne, Ellaria and the Sand Snakes enact their coup just as Doran was piecing everything together. Doran, Hotah, Trystane...all assassinated. And business seems to be picking up in Dorne.

Tyrion and Varys take a time-filling Walk of Exposition through the streets of Meereen, where they conclude that the Sons of the Harpy were likely taking orders from a higher power. They come to find Meereen’s harbor set ablaze.

At the end of the last season, Dany was taken captive by a horde of Dothraki. Here, we find out she was taken to a Dothraki camp and brought to Khal Moro. After not letting on for a while that she speaks their language while she is threatened with bad things, she pulls a power play. After listing her many honorifics, she finally reveals that she is Khal Drogo’s widow, which causes this Khal to back off and become respectful. Victory! Not so fast. She quickly learns that the fate of Khal widows is to spend the rest of their days together effectively imprisoned. Bad news. Good thing Jorah and Daario found the ring that Dany dropped before being captured and are hopefully on the trail.

Theon and Sansa continue their escape from Winterfell. Ramsay’s search party catches up with them, and things look bleak until Brienne and Pod save the day! Sansa formally accepts Brienne’s servitude and yay, something nice happens for once.

Finally, at Castle Black, Jon Snow is dead, apparently. Ser Davos and Friends of Jon Snow take Jon’s body and hole themselves up in the Castle as they recognize Thorne is behind this. And indeed, Thorne freely admits to his actions in front of the angry men of the Night’s Watch, selling it as taking out a traitor rather than being the traitor himself. He seems to be winning them over. Later, Thorne promises Davos free passage out of Castle Black if he’ll just open the door. Davos is highly suspicious and sends for the Red Woman. A depressed Red Woman is getting ready for bed by undressing and taking off her choker, and oh, it seems the choker was magically disguising her true appearance, a decrepit old woman, to others.

I believe I had the Red Woman being nothing more than a pack of lies. You missed blind Arya getting beaten up by the Faceless Man's bitch assistant. Plus Queen Marge being treated like shit in religious prison. More things to depress you. Thank God, Silicone Valley is there not to further make you go crazy with their down on their luck characters.

Betting odds after the Lannisters go full heel and wipe out the religious nuts, the sacking of Dorne is off screen. Davos is so great. Him needling Thorne was great. When Sam comes back to no Jon and Night's Watch, will he sad or just pissed? No Bran makes me wonder if he is going have just episode or two with just him, because we have seven side plots and only a few look like they are going to intersect.

The Dorne cleanup is just utter garbage, and it seems like it comes from a desire to wrap up the Dornish plotline after it was summarily lambasted (and correctly so) last season. The funny part is that they clean up everything (and everyone) the fans wanted and leave the idiotic Sand Snakes as the last women standing. It's a classic Vince McMahon reaction, in the sense it seems completely out of touch with what the audience actually wanted. It seems hastily arranged, and I wonder if what we saw last night was a shotgun decision, because there was a fair bit of foreshadowing last season that indicated some sort of truce and alliance between Ellaria and Doran, a path that could also have included some sort of epic showdown between the snakes and Areo Hotah, and character depth for Ellaria, who would have had to choose between her daughters and what is good for the country in the long run.

There are serious logical holes in that story, too. With Doran and Trystane dead, House Martell is now legally extinct (since show Doran doesn't seem to have any other offspring), and Ellaria has precisely zero legal ground to rule Dorne. Also, how in the hell did the two snakes get to Trystane? We saw them last at the harbor while Jaime sailed away. Trystane doesn't seem surprised to see them, either. Teleportation?

It doesn't help that the sand snakes are exceedingly poorly written and equally poorly acted. Is it that hard to hold a consistent accent through the grand total of 15 lines they have had so far?

The rest of the episode was largely unremarkable. I enjoyed Davos's demand of mutton, and Carice van Houten's facial expressions at the end. Also fun was the Brothraki Brothers escorting Dany to Khal Moro, and Khal Moro's awesome court. After being the most boring, insipid ruler in Westeros for two years, I have faint hope that Dany will be more interesting this season.

Did I mention that the Sand Snakes are godawful and should die?

I like the Sand Snakes, they're hot. More Sand Snakes for Khal CruelAngel777.

I'm pretty sure there was some significant time between those scenes. Unless that letter teleported from Jaimies ship directly into the courtyard.

Dorne was already pretty relaxed about illegitimate children having official roles and being recognized, so for all we know, maybe Ellaria or one of the Snakes is now officially in charge of House Martell and is now Queen in the South? I echo everyone in saying that the Dorne storyline has been a waste of time at best and a real low point of the show at worst. If Dorne is reduced to just "a particularly sneaky thorn in the side of the Lannisters," that might be for the best at this point. Or, Dorne is the state that reaches out to Daenerys to bring her to Westeros, since now she's in need of ships.

Just for clarification's sake, when they say "winter is coming," that means it'll be winter over all over Westeros and Essos, right? Including the desert areas in Dorne and the Red Waste? So climate alone won't halt the march of the White Walkers?

George Michael weighed his options. Maeby had chastised him for not taking risks, and what would be a bigger risk than perpetuating a lie about software just to ignite the passions of a woman? Of course it would be a lie, and since Maeby wouldn't know it was a lie, he wouldn't appear to be taking a risk. Perhaps the bigger risk was to tell his father he was lying, that he came up with it because he wanted his father to leave so he could enjoy what remained of his senior year. After all, he wondered, wouldn't that be the course of action taken by an overtly sexual man, a man who owns a pair of matador pants? He had not responded now for 41 seconds according to his unfailing internal clock, and it was time to come clean.

We should be in the beginning of Winter in King's Landing, but they continue to show it as a beach resort. I blame Martin, because its hinted in Book One, King's Landing is a few months away from Winter and its been over a year or so and he continues to write King's Landing as Miami.

Interesting the way Agents of SHIELD has migrated from being an 8PM show aimed in part at young people to being a 10PM show. Time After Time was a great movie, but I'm not sure I want it as a series after all these years.
