The news is a downer, but at the same time his health is more important than our entertainment. If this generation of wrestlers is to have better post-career lives than previous generations, this sort of thing is probably something we'll be seeing more often going forward.
Won the WWE title at Wrestlemania while pinning Triple H cleanly in the same night, supermodel wife, financially stable. Why risk further issues down the road?
Then again, wrestling. Could be a Mark Henry moment just as much as it could be an Edge moment.

I am thinking he is announcing his retirement by challenging Taker at Mania. The alternative is for them to get more cheap heat on someone, because why not fuck Daniel one last time out the door.
This isn't a work. If it were, Bryan would be teasing a "Major announcement" and have "something to say on Raw tonight."
Instead, he's directly announced his retirement with WWE.com corroborating. It's the real deal. His retirement is "effective immediately."
If this were a tease, he'd be a lot more careful with his words here. This isn't similar to the Mark Henry angle, because they teased it all night until the angle, and then immediately reneged on it in the same segment. I doubt we're going there considering Bryan's injuries.
I tend to think it's real and an angle. They know this is going to get No! No! No! chants the moment he steps in the ring, because that's exactly what happened last time Daniel Bryan stepped in a ring to tease retirement. The show - any show, but a show in Seattle definitely - is going to die a death if Daniel Bryan just retires.
So it won't be that. I don't think he's wrestling again because it's impossible to believe WWE would clear him for one match and then no other matches. He's either good to go or he's not good to go. But WrestleMania needs Daniel Bryan, so him being set up as a guest referee for the title match (a role that was offered and turned down by Batista) or something else done to have him endorse Roman Reigns seems like the way they'll end up going.

Also reminded me of this...maybe he's retiring to get out of his contract? Since the rumor is that's what he's been trying to do.
BREAKING: AJ Lee (April Mendez) has decided to retire from in-ring competition with WWE. We wish AJ the very best.
Meltzer - in a message board thread that's not even his own message board - did say Daniel Bryan asked for his release and was turned down. If anything, the language in WWE's contracts likely allowed them to add an extra year due to his injury - that's the same thing that allowed WWE to hold onto Rey Misterio an extra year.
If retiring allowed you to get out of your contract, WWE probably wouldn't be putting Daniel Bryan on RAW (and lots of people would've tried retiring in the late 90s.) 'Retiring' in this instance probably means taking another job inside of WWE, at least for the duration of his contract.
I look forward (not at all) to Stephanie screeching goodbye for ten minutes. Maybe even a "hey hey hey goodbye" chant to the bane of her husband's existence. Much hay will be made.
I think it's an angle. I hope it is.

Considering what's been going on with him for the past year I have to assume it's real. And on one hand I can understand he wants to get back into the ring. On the other hand, wtf dude..don't kill yourself. Going back to the INdies would mean taking more risk again and cannot be good for him long term. So I almost hope this is legit, he becomes a trainer or something, WWE funds his wrestling school etc etc. Daniel Bryan - NXT head coach, that does have a good ring to it?
Anyways, yes of course they'll turn it into some sort of angle. I just hope they are either working us 100% and all of the above can be ignored, or they let him walk out with his head high, etc etc. While Punk might've been first, Daniel must've opened eyes backstage (HHH) as to how Indy darlings can get over just by being themselves (both character as in-style ring) We wouldn't be seeing guys like Owens, Zayn and AJ Styles without him.

This is the smartest thing I think I've ever seen you post. Quite plausible, as maybe this will allow either to go into the sunset.

I mean they won't clear him to wrestle ever again but they'd let him have one more match to risk getting even more messed up? I disagree that it is plausible,

Thinking about it more (and now seeing more info as the "newz" sites report on what Meltzer is saying), you're right, it doesn't make sense.
Speaking of Meltzer, he did an audio segment today where he was talking about the situation. If I had more disposable income, I'd sign up to hear it.

Here's the funniest thing: If this is a work, and Bryan comes out at the end of the show to announce his retirement, how big a pop do you think there will be if The Authority's music plays? I mean, here comes the (kayfabe) most evil people in the wrestling world and people will be apeshit happy if they see them coming to the ring cuz they'll know it was a work.
Thank you Bryan for artificially making wrestling great to watch at a time it was realistically more or less terrible. This board might've been straight ghosted three years ago if it weren't for the Daniel Bryan story that consumed this business.
(Does anybody want to take over posting these? It's not THAT hard but involves a bit of manual labour. I can probably train you if you're smart enough to find the WWE's Facebook galleries.) As always, thanks to the WWE Facebook group.
