Stealing the numbers from wikipeida

PRESHOW: Goldust, The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley), Neville, and Titus O'Neil defeated The Cosmic Wasteland (Stardust, Konnor and Viktor), The Miz, and Bo Dallas (18:10)

1) Roman Reigns defeated Alberto Del Rio (with Zeb Colter) - Tournament semifinal match (14:01)
2) Dean Ambrose defeated Kevin Owens - Tournament semifinal match (11:19)
3) Ryback, The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso), and The Lucha Dragons (Kalisto and Sin Cara) defeated The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods), Sheamus, and King Barrett (17:33)
4) Charlotte (c) defeated Paige by submission (14:15)
5) Tyler Breeze (with Summer Rae) defeated Dolph Ziggler (6:40)
6) The Brothers of Destruction (The Undertaker and Kane) defeated The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper) (with Braun Strowman and Erick Rowan) (10:19)
7) Roman Reigns defeated Dean Ambrose - Tournament final match for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship (09:02)
8) Sheamus defeated Roman Reigns (c) - for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (0:34)

They told a story all night of this being Roman's one chance to prove he wasn't a failure, as if the man would never get another shot if he lost here. He won to prevent that, but then got it immediately taken away from him. The path forward seems to be Reigns chasing Sheamus to WrestleMania, but it could also be Reigns versus Triple H. There's nothing here that changed the plan of Reigns being the new top #1, it's just a question if they damaged him going forward by having him lose the title instantly.

The final was underwhelming, feeling like it ended several minutes early. It was obvious something was going to happen, with the only question being if Reigns would also take out Sheamus too. He did not, losing to a second big boot. Sheamus came off as a very cold top heel - they had a spot earlier in the night where he was the uncool dork with the New Day, and he got cleanly beat to end the PPV Survivor Series match - so WWE is gambling the shock of Sheamus winning the title and attaching him to Authority will make him interesting quick. Both of those things are feeling equally played out.

The booking all night was not a great thing, but they might have actually turned Reigns into a sympathetic figure, but at the cost of frustrating more people on their product.

If you're watching this later, the Owens/Ambrose match was match of the night and maybe the only match you need to see. Everything else met or didn't reach expectations.

There was nothing to the Undertaker match but an entrance. Breeze/Ziggler and the main event felt like they got shorted on time, and the New Day Survivor Series match (who's time doesn't include a length intro) and Charlotte/Paige match both felt like they went well long. The women's match was hurt by not being much over - the fans didn't care much all night, but the bit from RAW didn't seem to add interest to the match and Charlotte didn't wrestle as angry as she probably should've.

I don't think that the ending did anything more than come off as a cheap imitation of SummerSlam 2013's ending, except Bryan was a much more sympathetic figure and Orton aligning with HHH marked a significant character change for both.

This is just status quo. HHH has a heel champion aligned with the Authority who also loses constantly. Except people care much less about Sheamus than they ever did about Rollins.

The tournament was really uninspiring. The Shield hierarchy of Roman > Rollins > Ambrose is pretty sad when Ambrose has always come off as the most talented of the three to me. Roman beats Ambrose and Rollins every time out, Rollins beats Ambrose every time out, and Ambrose just loses to everyone when it could really make the difference for him to win.

I don't think Roman chasing Sheamus is a great direction here. I know they need a top heel and all that, but wrong guy in the wrong role. There really wasn't much heat here. Just boredom.

Here are some more thoughts from a demented mind in Central Florida:
It's like they thought that the way to finally get Roman Reigns over is to repeat the path previously taken by Daniel Bryan from SummerSlam 2013 to WrestleMania XXX in 2014. However, the problems lie in that not only is Roman Reigns still nowhere in Daniel Bryan's league to pull all of this off (and in Bryan's case, despite getting screwed over and sidetracked to no end along the way), but also Reigns is far less convincing as an underdog.

The smarks will also laugh at "creative's" attempt to go this route, knowing how long Roman Reigns has been Vince's guy. Also, Reigns's exit tonight at PPV's end is reminiscent of that PPV match from 2012 (? 2013, perhaps?) between HHH and Brock Lesnar, where Brock won, and HHH stayed in the ring after Brock left, hoping for some sort of ovation and/or sympathy... and got none of it. This really is the hill Vince McMahon wants to die (quite literally, perhaps) on, apparently.

Additionally, while an argument could be made that Dean Ambrose can now challenge for the IC belt against Kevin Owens (since he cleanly beat him in the semis), Ambrose is now back to stuck in the mid-card. And speaking of stuck in the mid-card, Undertaker and Kane beating the Wyatt Family with no additional partners, while maybe a nice nostalgia moment for the fans, seems to have missed a prime opportunity to elevate someone, be it one of the Wyatts or someone teaming with the Brothers of Destruction. As long as we're talking mistakes McMahon refuses to concede and to correct, deep down, if he was still sort of in touch with reality, would he regret telling Taker it was time to end the Streak at WrestleMania XXX to Brock, knowing that his best chance now to fill up the stadium for WrestleMania XXXII would be Taker vs. Cena, Streak vs. Title?

Why yes, I am both a musician and a lawyer. Thanks for asking. :)

The booking leading up to this show couldn't have been much sloppier, so it's probably fitting that it wraps up with the shit sandwich of a Sheamus title win.

George Michael weighed his options. Maeby had chastised him for not taking risks, and what would be a bigger risk than perpetuating a lie about software just to ignite the passions of a woman? Of course it would be a lie, and since Maeby wouldn't know it was a lie, he wouldn't appear to be taking a risk. Perhaps the bigger risk was to tell his father he was lying, that he came up with it because he wanted his father to leave so he could enjoy what remained of his senior year. After all, he wondered, wouldn't that be the course of action taken by an overtly sexual man, a man who owns a pair of matador pants? He had not responded now for 41 seconds according to his unfailing internal clock, and it was time to come clean.

I feel that we saw the exact same ending we would have seen had Rollins not gotten hurt, including random spear to HHH.

Taker and Kane going over is meaningless if they aren't going to be on the show every week.

Roman Reigns has all the things that Vince McMahon wants in a champion, look, body, presence, big Penis (one of those things is a lie) & he's absolutely dead set on forcing him as a good guy. Now, since Vince refuses to change his mind, the next best thing (as much as i'd have hated it) would've been to turn Ambrose & they didn't even do that. Neither Reigns nor Ambrose got anything out of this. Dean is forever cemented as Mr Second Fiddletm, & Roman looks like a moron who fucked himself over by spearing HHH for no reason.

Vince McMahon has completely lost his mind and no one in the company has the balls to tell him. The ratings aren't gonna go up, bro. The whole East Coast will be watching the Pats game, Sheamus is champion, and no one cares.

When the main event ended with about 30 minutes left I think everyone knew what was going to happen, through the confetti you can see the fans look to the ramp, the ref was still hanging out by the spanish announce table in full view of the camera, and usually they bring up the MITB holder about 50 times in a title match and they never did.

If the end result was Sheamus winning the title, why not just have him cash in on RAW or say on Raw he was cashing in at Survivor Series and be given the championship? With that in mind why was Sheamus even trying to win his first round match? just walk out and say you'll wait till the finals.

The Authority was so good to their last champion storyline wise why would anyone else get into bed with them?

The Wyatts are essentially The Moondogs at this point, and it's total bullshit that nobody threw one lightning bolt.

It's funny how the Shield guys never seem to gel when matched up against each other.

This show was surprisingly very underwhelming, I was really expecting to like it.

Not surprised that Owens and New Day are the high points again.

A bad booking decision in July has come back to haunt them in November. I thought the Sheamus cash in would happen, but fail and we can move to Reigns vs the Wyatts or Owens or almost anyone else, but Sheamus. Then again, after last night, the Wyatts are broken too. At this point, there is no person on the roster that isn't broken. New Day is great, but they are not legit contenders plus they are in the tag division and are ultimately a comedy act.

This company is an alcoholic who can't get enough of a shot of evil boss in charge storyline. They got addicted back in the 90s when it was fresh and new now they are the strung out addict in the hallway hoping to get $2 from you to get another beer.

This roster is awful. Lets stop with calling everyone who comes from NXT as the next big thing. Its done. NXT is good for NXT much in the same way that ECW was good as the best indy territory during the Monday Night Wars. Its a combination of management being too stupid for their own good and talent not having the balls to say "Fuck you, No." I understand for some who got there, it will be hard. For guys who have been there for years, it needs to start happening. Austin even before he became champ, he told management no many times. Foley told Ryder go to Vince not the Internet if you have a problem with your push. There seems to be no leadership in that locker room. None. That is a massive problem, because it is coming out on the show. Where talent stands around while HHH and Steph decided their fate. Eventually, the talent needs to decided their own fate.

Xavier Woods' conked pompadour.

Tyler Breeze's exclusive interview.

Kevin Owens' commitment to verbal greatness while wrestling.

I watched a lot of hype videos (not Mojo Rawley, although I like him more now than I ever thought I would but that's a post for a different time and place) during Survivor Series last night. First one that stood out was about the 25 years of Undertaker. There was a nice little part where they talked about owning Undertaker commemorative merchandise. They showed a coffin (?) with "The Streak" and "21-1" on it. I'm assuming it's this one (amazon.com). This would be great if he wasn't 22-1, and the 22 in 22 and 1 was a man he was feuding with last night. Through lack of mention and creative editing, that match apparently never took place; we all had the same collective waking dream.

Another part of that shared experience was revealed in the Paige-Charlotte hype video. Apparently the weeks of Paige maybe-turning, maybe-attacking Fartin' Nattie, but still teaming with Submission Sorority never happened IRL. She turned full heel when she cut that initial promo on Raw during Charlotte's celebration.

The third creative edit scrubbed the decimation of the entire Wyatt Family by the BoD two weeks ago.

If I didn't watch that Raw, and in the case of 22-1 that WrestleMania, and consumed my WWE in only WWE approved ways (through hype videos and soundbytes), the retconning would be fine. But I have been watching these shows regularly for a while now, and definitely over the last year. I saw what I saw and despite their best efforts, I cannot unsee it. This leads to the question of, "Who is planning this shit?" Three obvious alterations to prominent storylines, at the same time, is not the mark of a confident creative force. Did one person decide to have Bray be 22, keep Paige on PCB, and feed the Wyatts to UT-Kane two weeks before Survivor Series, where one of the headlining matches was UT-Kane vs 2 Wyatts? And then a different person looked at that and said, "Great first draft, but how about we do this instead?" If so, that first person should be fired. Or, more frightening, are those two people in my example really one person who can't make a decision and stick with it? When you're the one writing the story, you can tell it however you like. Why not tell it the right way from the jump instead of telling me that my fandom and continued support is irrelevant by noticeably altering aspects of those stories and not acknowledging those alterations? Apparently I enjoy being made to feel like a moron by my choice of entertainment. I'm not looking for high-brow shit here; I just want something that makes sense and has some continuity.

All of that leads to the bigger question of, "Why should I watch if they're going to tell me what I saw, regardless of what I really did see?" I don't have an answer for that one right now. And that makes me sad.

So, some things happened last night but I can't be sure if they will matter tonight.

The safest, most boring way to go, so naturally they took it. Still not really a bad plan, except for the part where Sheamus is literally the least talented or interesting guy they employ out of like, 60 possible options. We could have had Korporate Kalisto, you guys.

The only real takeaway from last night is that Owens and Ambrose should now feud over the IC title through WrestleMania so that we have at least one interesting thing going on.

Not sure what I loved and cringed at more, Cole losing his shit about "the definitive moment" as confetti fell and the crowd just sat there bemused like they were taping Superstars. Or the epilogue where they cut back to Reigns and faded out Sheamus' music so he could get the sympathy ovation, only for the silence to be broken by boos. Imagine trying to recreate the Daniel Bryan Wrestlemania video beat for beat minus the crowd shots. Imagine Reigns being DAMN SCREWED out of the championship next month due to erroneous table breakage.

The tournament final and first ever Reigns/Ambrose match went eight minutes.

It's starting to look more and more like Punk and Bryan were propping up the company for four years and their unsolicited, underappreciated success was almost double-handedly holding back the deluge we are now facing. Now it's dying like [reidacted] Flair. Can Cena just come back and AA Sheamus AND Reigns into oblivion and let things go back to normal. At least he has fans; at least life under Cena made sense. The year of desperate and tragic Reigns manipulations has just been some long avant garde art experiment and exercise in mass delusion.

The Atlanta crowd was at its hottest when Owens interrupted the Reigns promo. They were rabid for KO. As soon as he lost, the crowd deflated.

They perked up a bit for the New Day, but died again when Kofi and Xavier inexplicably left. Let's not gloss over that: WWE booked its most entertaining act to simply walk away and never appear again. Baffling.

One teeny tiny booking tweak would have made the ending of the tournament way less predictable. Instead of that weird "Be my man" promo from HHH a couple weeks ago, have him come out and say, "Just like Seth Rollins, I've struck another deal with a member of The Shield." But not say which one. Then Reigns and Ambrose could have teased distrust of each other, building to a final where they outright want to destroy each other because each thinks the other sold out. Then HHH springs the Sheamus trap. (Of course, having Mr. Money in the Bank be pretty much anyone other than Sheamus would have helped a ton too.)

EDIT:

To be fair, "The Streak" ended with the Brock Lesnar match. "21-1" is part of the streak story, but the Bray Wyatt match is not. It's a separate thing.

I think we're finally ready to move on from Cena, but this is a pretty accurate take on what's been going on in WWE. There have been people the fans have chosen, and there have been people that Vince has chosen. The only reason why we haven't seen any progress beyond Cena is because every time they have a new guy, Vince wants someone else and it never lines up.

We're now living in Vince's utopia from 2011, where Sheamus is World Champ, Del Rio is back up there, and he's grooming his new Cena in Roman Reigns. Damn what the fans think.

Forget, even, that they're trying to do the Daniel Bryan Build but with the guy who annoyed everybody by ruining the Daniel Bryan Build not even a year ago. There was a faint "Let's Go ___"/"Roman Sucks!" chant at one point last night, right? So there you go, three years to build up a more tepid, less polarizing, less popular version of the tepid, polarizing, mildly popular guy who held ratings steady after the guy currently inserting himself in all the top angles as Cool Heel kicked the bottom out of the boom period. All that work to make a New John Cena people can't even get worked up enough to be mad at. This is...not a good business model.

Worst part of it is, we had all resigned to Roman winning the title. And the logic of "get it over with now so people can deal with it and forget why they were mad last year" was sound enough. But now they're going to have him win the Rumble anyway, which will give everyone a chance to remember why they hated this last year. Worst of both worlds!

Barring Roman coming out tonight and saying "Eh, that was pretty dumb. OK, I'll join the Authority" (and having it stick and not be a shitty version Steve Austin In A Suit Pretending To Join Vince), we're now going to be looking at the third consecutive year where they've misread everything on the Road To WrestleMania and will have to make something up the week before Mania, though they've used those three years to bomb and pave over so many options that there's no clear "here's how you fix it, dummies" outcome this time.

There may still be some salvageable plays: Roman gives up and turns, Cena returns and punks Sheamus and puts on the suit and joins the Authority...that's kinda it, right? But right now, we're on a collision course for Roman/Sheamus at WrestleMania (no one wants this) or Roman/HHH at WrestleMania (one person wants this, probably very badly) and these will both require management sputtering at terrible reactions and how can you not have fixed things after three years of this?

In many ways, Owens is the Last True Heel in WWE, insofar as he remembers how to be a big phony asshole who can also beat everyone without playing Cool Heel like certain Senior Vice Presidents of Talent Relation can't stop themselves from doing. (I mean, Sheamus is actually a Real Heel, too, but this is not a day to be praising Sheamus, through little fault of his own.)

Smaller scale dumb stuff at Survivor Series:

-the only Traditional Survivor Series Match on the main card ends with the majority of the losing team just leaving and not getting eliminated (this mostly worries me because not really booking New Day's elimination or victory at Survivor Series has me worried that they won't remember to properly book New Day at the Rumble, and let's be very clear here, New Day is going to have to carry the entire Royal Rumble themselves this year)

-Neville being the only face eliminated in the pre-show Traditional Survivor Series Match. The most exciting guy on that team is the only one who gets eliminated?

-They hate Wade Barrett so much and I don't know why. Barrett being unbelievably into the New Day's antics (and aghast at Sheamus' faux-pas) was great. Wade Barrett is friggin' great. He should have been allowed to turn tweener, if not face, when Bad News Barrett was crazy over. He should have been an Authority enforcer all this time if he was going to stay heel. He should, right now, be allowed to dump the crown in the trash and join New Day and become Good News Barrett preaching the power of positivity either sincerely or ironically. Just...you have three hours a week on Raw, give me five minutes of Wade Barrett coming out and insulting someone and going "MA-HA-HA-HA-HA!" like a cartoon villain and smashing them in a face with his forearm. Why no love for the Charlotte/Paige match? Are people getting spoiled because the women's matches have been so awesome in NXT? Or are people annoyed that they're not letting Sasha Banks do 5-minute interviews & 20-minute matches yet (I mean, I know I am).

They told a pretty good story, and while being longer than any other singles match on the card (and almost longer than the elimination matches), managed to hold my interest more than any other singles match on the card. Plus, perhaps taking backstage lessons from Sasha Banks, Paige has turned herself into kind of an awesome heel.

But mostly, botched spear aside, that match had some great innovative offensive. I can't remember the last time a men's match had any real innovation to it, and the women seem to come up with something new every PPV.

They were both putting in the effort, but from where I sat, none of that innovative offense looked very painful. Yet, both of them were screaming like they had been lit on fire. The dead crowd did them no favors, either.

But yes, we've ABSOLUTELY been spoiled by NXT Women's matches. The bar has been set, and while not every match has to be of that quality, they've been so good that they're perpetually in fans' minds.

Wade's got a good look, good size, great voice, but once the bell rings & he starts wrestling, he's pretty "eh". Nothing he does between the ropes stands out appreciably from anyone else on the roster or makes you say "hey, you gotta see this Wade Barrett match!". Nikki Bella throws a better elbow.

The women's match would have gone down a lot better as the match following a Friendly Rivals feud, not a "your brother died like a coward" pull-apart brawl blood feud. The two of them circling around for the lock-up felt like the beginning of a good NXT match where everyone would break kayfabe and hug at the end, but Charlotte should have been going for blood as soon as she hit the ring, if not waiting for Paige in the parking lot with a tire iron.

I did like the Figure Four/reversal/Figure Four/reversal/roll to the outside bit that ended with Charlotte doing a variation on the Ringpost Figure Four, partially because it felt like a fixed version of the slightly wonky spot they did in the Charlotte/Nattie match that kinda, sorta launched the WWE Women's Renaissance, and also because I mark for any reference to the Ringpost Figure Four, because it is awesome and brutal and mean and the kind of thing Charlotte should have been doing to someone as evil as they decided Paige was a week ago.

(Similarly, I liked Del Rio refusing to let go of the armbar and keeping it on Roman even as Roman tried to beat him over the top rope. Made Del Rio looks cool and mean again, which he hasn't since his second match back. I also expected it to play into the finish of the Ambrose finals match, but I think they either forgot to book an ending to the Ambrose finals match or just told the ref to tell Ambrose to go home with no warning, so.)

I don't necessarily disagree, but this was very also true of Roman Reigns: Singles Wrestler last year and was true of John Cena for 85% of the last ten years, and only one of those guys gets literally kicked in the balls by HHH with no comeuppance or chased off TV for a week by Jerry Lawler pointing at him instead of being pushed as the be-all, end-all focus of shows. There has to be better ways to use Barrett.

Well I think this might happen; Vince could say by Cena getting involved in interrupting the sex (technically it was Flair that did it) the RR rematch for Cena could get taken away. Cena then can win the RR and face Edge at WM22.
