The Washington Post published an article/blog post confirming that John Cena will be off of WWE TV and schedules after Hell in a Cell and until the end of December. "Personal reasons" being the explanation, but nothing beyond that.
Meltzer said people are under the impression Cena asked for this months ago, during the summer.
Wellness violation is the fun story, but the odds of Cena testing positive when no full time wrestler has gotten caught seems like Powerball level odds.
This break is well timed during the slowest part of the year. With other people (Hogan), this would look like the star getting out during a slow period and waiting to return until MNF winds down so he can take credit for an improvement which was going to happen naturally. With company man Cena, I'd more think that this is the only time of year where he feels even slightly comfortable leaving without letting everyone down - there's no All Hands on Deck Show until Rumble.
Or maybe he's just doing a movie?
Dave said Dean Ambrose would be taking over as lead guy on some shows, so he's actually got to win now. (Ric Flair will be added to shows where Cena was advertised as a make good, and Daniel Bryan was listed as being on the European shows briefly.)
But the real thing that has to happen is Rollins has to be beating John Cena, and pretty solidly. Rollins needs that sort of win bad and it's not going to hurt Cena if he's disappearing anyawy. Don't bother with an injury angle because they won't pick up on it anyway, but let Rollins just get a win.
Also, Cena probably (but not 100% because it's WWE) will be losing the US title in the next few weeks, which sure makes those open challenges very interesting.
The payoff to the whole 'open challenge' storyline had to be someone coming out on Raw (not Owens at a PPV, or Rollins at Summerslam) and beating Cena to win the title. That will assuredly be happening within the next couple of weeks, or the Raw after the HITC show at the latest.
Since the story about Cena's absence has now become public, I wonder if WWE will get the belt off him at the first possible opportunity for a 'surprise' and give him some other story for the HITC show so he's not going into his hiatus on a losing note.
George Michael weighed his options. Maeby had chastised him for not taking risks, and what would be a bigger risk than perpetuating a lie about software just to ignite the passions of a woman? Of course it would be a lie, and since Maeby wouldn't know it was a lie, he wouldn't appear to be taking a risk. Perhaps the bigger risk was to tell his father he was lying, that he came up with it because he wanted his father to leave so he could enjoy what remained of his senior year. After all, he wondered, wouldn't that be the course of action taken by an overtly sexual man, a man who owns a pair of matador pants? He had not responded now for 41 seconds according to his unfailing internal clock, and it was time to come clean.
Clearly, he's so devastated by the rekindling of the torrid relationship between Nikki & Dolph (See "Total Divas" season finale.) that he needs time away to recover from the loss. Or, alternatively, he's got to dedicate himself to winning the heart of Amy Schumer as a neener-neener to Dolph.
I just hope it leads to someone finally winning one of these US Opens and elevating new talent. Ambrose being the next guy up is a smart move. I can't imagine with the ratings falling that Vince is just going to keep going with Seth. I wonder if we are going to get a who hit Cena with a car storyline? A storyline where the title is now vacant and we get a mini-tournament that eventually leads to whoever has the bigger ratings segment during this time.
As good as the Cena challenge matches have been I wasn't really looking forward to a never ending slew of them again. There are only so many near falls that can happen and the Cena feuds have become tiresome. Wyatt, Rusev, Owens and Rollins all go early upper hands and have been steamrolled since, so whoever gets the US Title will at least have a couple of months of enjoying their Cena win.
I'm putting all my money on it being Big E.
... and Rollins has to beat Cena in non flukey fashion which means Cena would have to eat two losses. I don't know if he has it in him and that is what is most interesting to me.
I just like the fact that Cena taking time off will get Vince's head out of Cena's ass long enough for him to finally see all the potential top of the card guys he has at his disposal.
I'm gonna put my money on Cesaro. As far as your indomitable Herculean feats of strength guy that you can have work with anyone akin to Cena he's your guy.
In reality though, I think we are heading into a "Reign" Fall....
Cole: "Yeah, thanks to Kane. You should buy Kane a Rolex watch for what he did for you."
Rollins: "Oh don't be silly, Kane doesn't wear watches."

That never seems to happen, but you'd think that it eventually has to.
I mean, if they keep going down the Reigns path, I can't see anything really improving for the company. He's made some strides since WrestleMania, mainly because they've allowed him to have relationships with other characters that we can see on-screen and relate to, but he's still taking baby steps.
Maybe he'll be ready in 7 years, but there's certainly people who are there right now who can make things happen and be interesting television personalities, which is ultimately what it boils down to.
I know we're talking about John Cena taking some time off, and people get to talking about "after Cena" as if that time is here.
I mean, Flair held his spot for a long time - like late 70s, or at least 1980 to about 93-94 at least and really, more like 97 at the top of the card. Hogan as well. and plent of other guys. Bruno, Lou, certainly Verne. Tricky Nick too. The promoters saw they could make money - or in some cases, they were the promoter - and kept them there.
and some promoters made bad decisions as they aged. Verne's a good example of that. Toward the end, he refused to push big guys very much and worked with another older promoter in Fritz and they made some bad decisions.
I think Vince is making some now. I think he's i love with Cena and deservedly so. They guy can put on a good match, the kids love him and he's reasonably well crossed over (he is on the Kimmels and Fallons and Kelly and Michael and stuff). No one else can pull that off. As good a worker as Rollins is, as good a look as Reigns has and as good a talker as Ambrose is, none of them can do that.
no one on the roster can.
So Cena is coming back as the same Cena. Someone will carry the ball for a couple months. Can we expect Nikki to be gone too? I figure that as well.
but when he comes back, don't expect much change because that's what has made money for Vince. And like Verne with Tricky Nick and Fritz with his boys and even Jerry Jarrett with The King, he might keep him too long (I don't think that time has come yet) and not be able to recover when he finally can't carry the ball any longer.
But Vince isn't letting Cena be anything except Cena. I doubt that will change one iota.
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

I predict that Cena declares that since nobody could beat him in the open challenge, he's decided to retire the belt, leaving only the IC title as a secondary belt.

Mjolnir. No one else can hold the title, even if they (somehow) defeat Cena. If any superstar dares to defeat Cena and attempts to pick up Mjolnir, Mjolnir activates and automatically gives the unworthy holder two losses in the most emasculating way possible, and that false-champion is banished to either a love-triangle, Superstars, or (best case) an IC title feud. The IC title option only activates if HHH uses his power of Camaraderie. Camaraderie can only be cast on one superstar, once per year. Once Camaraderie is cast, HHH and Vince must each roll one die. The higher roll wins. If HHH loses the roll, it counts as a Camaraderie activation and cannot be cast again until one year from the original declaration.
