This week, we continue the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament, but we're going to start the show with something else. Carmella's got a match with somebody named Peyton Royce, which, based on Summer Rae's comments about when she got her own name, is definitely something that Dusty Rhodes would have never let get past him. It's a little unfortunate, because if you've been paying attention, you'll notice that Peyton here is actually standout jobber Cassie, who's had my full support since carrying Eva Marie in her first NXT match. Not only is she sporting a new name, she also gets a full entrance with music, although I imagine that music is going to get changed into something less generic in the future, as is the style down in Winter Park. Anyhoo, there is actually a match here, although new name notwithstanding, Peyton is still here to do the job. Carmella's standout move in this match is easily her moonwalk. Yes, I meant moonwalk, not moonsault. She's added Michael Jackson's patented dance step as a taunt. I don't mean to be dismissive - she actually does a really nice moonwalk. Okay, fair's fair: she also does a pretty good flying headscissors takeover. Peyton shows off a little bit more actual wrestling in this match, including a very nice fisherman's suplex, some spin kicks of varying quality, and super crossbody block. None of that matters in the end, though, as Carmella locks in her submission move (which I am dubbing the Carmella Lock, as I am nothing if not atrociously lazy when it comes to making up names), and the job is done.
Match Rating: I Didn't Mention The Headlocks - This Match Had Some Really, Really Good Headlocks.

Backstage, Samoa Joe wants to know if Finn Balor is ready to take on the Lucha Dragons. Finn says he better be, and then some other stuff, but I can't take my eyes off the triple puncture marks on Finn's neck. Is that from the ladder in Brookly, or did he get attacked by some kind of Triple Vampire? Back on task, Joe does this thing where he's all like, "Don't forget your belt, champ!" and he's all smiles about it, but even Finn notices that something's up at this point. He's seen wrestling before, and I bet he know what it looks like when you're setting up a turn, too.

It turns out that the Dusty Tag Classic isn't just being saved for TV, it's been taking place at some house shows, too. Don't worry, you haven't been missing anything. Highlights show us that Enzo and Cass beat the team of Dawkins and Fulton. As I was taking my notes, I offhandedly jotted then down as DawFul, and thus shall they forevermore be known. We also get some "highlights" of Dash and Dawson getting the win over the "team" of Elias Samson and Somebody-or-other Knight, who I'm pretty sure we've never seen before. Still, I like the idea of this tournament being an ongoing thing that's happening even when we're not watching NXT television. It's world-building, if you can apply a concept like that to a one-hour weekly wrestling program.

We've got a new Nia Jax spot, although it doesn't say anything new. This is a lot of hype; I really hope that she winds up measuring up to at least some of it.

Our first televised match of the Dusty Classic this week is the team of Tyler Breeze and Bull Dempsey against the New Guys, Johnny Gargano and Tomaso Ciampa (incidentally, two more names that Dusty would have put a stop to). Garbanzo and Tomato have the most indie-riffic entrance I've ever seen, and I've been to a Chikara show. Somebody needs to take them aside and tell them to put a stop to that nonsense. I'v been pretty hard on Gargamel and Chimpanzee, but once they start wrestling, I see why people like these guys (People DO like these guys, right? I actually don't know a single thing about them). They hit really hard and have a variety of neat tandem moves. Anyhoo, the story here is that Gazpacho and Tomcat are just way, way too tough for Breeze, so he keeps tagging out and making Bull do all the literal heavy lifting. The new, improved Bull (for the record, the fans are having a lot of fun with "Bull-Fit") does pretty well, dominating with his superior size and strength. He's bowling these guys over with shoulder blocks, and using his strength to counter most of their offense. Every time he gets up on offense, he tries to bring in Breeze, only for Breeze to get knocked around and tag back out. Bull blocks an arm drag, then a shoulder tackle, but he can't ward off an enziguri. That's when Gobbledygooker and Timpani really get going on offense. Bull is almost able to tag Breeze in to save him, but Breeze gets kicked off the apron, and when he manages to get up off the floor, Bull knocks him down again with an ill-timed rope run. That's enough for Griffendor and Toyota Camry to pick up a pin with a combination Sunset Flip and Jackknife.
Match Rating: I Cannot Possibly Keep Up This Name Gag.
Afterwards, Breeze just tears into Bull. I mean, he just beats the shit out of him, ending with a supermodel kick to a kneeling Bull. I don't quite know where this is going, but it at least made Breeze look dangerous again.

The Lucha Dragons have a promo backstage, letting us know that they are competing for the honor of Dusty Rhodes, and reminding us that Kalisto is actually a perfectly good speaker and making me wonder why they never let him talk on RAW. I mean, I don't expect him to fill the opening 20 minutes, but there's no reason this guy can't be handed a mic for 30 seconds, right?

Dana Brooke is backstage, and she wants the belt on the perfectly valid basis that she's beaten Bayley before. The most (only?) interesting thing she says here, though, is that she declined an invitation to the Arnold Classic in Spain to focus on her wrestling career. I've been as hard on Dana as anyone, but I do appreciate the commitment.

Quick video package for the Perfect 10, Tye Dillinger. I'm not sure he warrants a video package. Not because I don't like him, but because everything you need to know about this guy you can figure out during his entrance. I mean, he's got a "10" shaved into the side of his head, you know?

Next up is Billie Kay against Dana Brooke. Billie Kay's been using that name for at least a couple weeks, but she is the former Jessie. Billie's also got a full entrance now, complete with absolutely awful music. It's a genuine contender for the worst music NXT has used for somebody's entrance. Dana is out sans Emma, and I think they're moving to break that team up. I have to say, Dana Brooke is coming along in the ring. She's still death on the mic, but in-ring, I feel like now she's right about where she should have been when they debuted her. It has a lot to do with her packaging, too. They had a ton of hype, and she's still using the "Total Diva" moniker, but she was so rough when she debuted. This is what Nia Jax is looking at, and it's a big part of why I hope Nia's a better performer to start than Dana was. Anyhoo. Billie starts this match with some nice headlocks and headlock takeovers. Looks like the women have really been doing their homework in Headlock Class. Dana cuts her off with an absolutely huge clothesline that should become part of her regular moveset, and then goes into what is honestly a pretty weak leg-scissors choke. After Billie maneuvers her way out of that, she hits some flying clotheslines and a very fluid hurricanrana, followed by a stiff kick. She goes for a pin, but unlike Eva Marie, Dana Brooke at least knows when she's supposed to kick out, so that goes nowhere. Dana's able to pop her with an enziguri, and follows that up with her fireman's carry Falcon Arrow for the pin.
Match Rating: Headlock Class Is Definitely A Real Thing At The Performance Center, Right?

Backstage, Apollo Crews dubs his fans the Apollo Nation, and says they're taking over NXT.

We get a recap package of Bayley's big win at Takeover. Next week, she'll be on NXT for the first time since becoming champion. But this week, we get to see some footage of Izzy, the #1 Bayley fan. You know, the girl in all the Bayley gear who always sits in the corner seat by the ramp on every NXT taping? We see her reacting to her hero winning the belt, and then Bayley gave her a backstage tour of the performance center. This is all pretty damn great. You watch something like this and wonder what little girl wouldn't want to grow up to be Bayley. More cynically, you watch this and wonder how it is even possible that WWE hasn't already turned Bayley into the biggest money-maker since John Cena himself, and how colossally they are going to mismanage her eventual call-up to RAW.

That was too sad of a way to talk about a very happy segment. Let's move on to the main event, which is the Lucha Dragons against Balor and Joe. They get the honor of competing in a RAW prematch, with commentary by the Smackdown crew of Tom Phillips and Jimmy Uso. Hmmm, maybe that second part isn't much of an honor. For anyone who's wondered how Balor's entrance would work on RAW, here it is. They've also given him a cool jacket to wear, which actually does look pretty nice, but Finn can't seem to stop touching it, so maybe he needs to break that in a little more. The RAW crowd, conditioned to sit on their hands for everything, sits on their hands for his entrance as well. Honestly, the crowd's a little slow to warm on all the entrances, but they do eventually get going for the match, even starting up a fairly loud "NXT" chant. We get a Handshake of Honor to start the match, and then we move into some basic chain wrestling, mostly arm wringers, which draws a "This is Awesome" chant, and look, guys, I know you're just trying to say that you like the *idea* of the match that's being put on, but maybe save it for when they start doing awesome stuff? I mean, they ARE going to. I've actually seen the whole match, we're going to get to some really great stuff, but you are chanting for actual arm wringers. Get your shit together, wrestling crowds. Whew, anyhoo, once the action starts getting hot, Balor nails a big dropkick to Sin Cara, bodydrops Kalisto to the floor, hits the Slingblade, and sends Sin Cara out to the floor to join his partner. There's no Danger Zone on the RAW set, but it is big enough on all sides that he still goes for a big dive on both guys next to the commentary desk. You know we're bringing this match to you from RAW territory, because that dive is the Crash to Break. When we come back, Joe's in, punching and chopping the shit out of Sin Cara, but when Balor gets back in, old No Face turns it around with a spinning backbreaker. Kalisto does this really cool move where he shoots Balor face-first into the turnbuckle, and then kneels behind him so that Balor trips on the rebound, then Sin Cara springboards in on top of Balor. The Dragons also have a thing where Sin Cara monkeyflips Kalisto, who does two full rotations around before splashing onto Balor. It is a monkeyflip ++, and it is amazing. It's one of those things that Kalisto does that looks like it shouldn't even be physically possible, and I've missed it since he's gone to RAW. Balor finally manages to get back into it with a pele kick, then makes the hot tag to Joe, who nails a corner enziguri (it's been a night of enziguris)on Sin Cara, then a big boot and a senton splash to Kalisto. Sin Cara comes back with a tornado DDT, then an absolutely beautiful springboard moonsault. Joe tries to hit a Muscle Buster, but Cara wriggles free into a sunset flip for two. Joe gets up and goes to his hundred handslap, but he backs Sin Cara into his own corner where Kalisto makes the blind tag. Joe shoots Sin Cara at the opposite ropes, but Sin Cara topes through the ropes into Balor! Joe turns around, and Kalisto hits an incredible hurricanrana on Joe into a pin! Joe's a real sport to sell the 'rana, but he's not letting Kalisto get a win off it. Instead, Kalisto eats a chokeslam, Sin Cara gets knocked to the floor, and Kalisto goes into a Muscle Buster followed by a Coupe De Grace, which they might as well name the Overkill. Kalisto's beyond done, and that's the match.
Match Rating: I Could Have Watched Another Twenty Minutes Of This, No Problem.

Really, really good show this week. One of the best main events they've done on TV in a while, and the angle advancements were all spot on, even Dana's. I like seeing the elevation of the established lady jobbers, although they could use some presentation tweaks. I even liked Guantanamo and Tripoli! Last one, I promise.

My daughter absolutely loves Bayley. Loves. She's four. They have magic if they don't mismanage her... which is the fear we all have, of course, because they mismanage almost everybody.

Enjoyable show this week. It is weird that we don't seem to be getting much focus on the NXT Title lately, but that's okay.

It was announced yesterday via the Twitter that THE main event of the next Takeover is Bayley-Sasha in a 30 minute Iron (Wo)man match. The ladies are about to bring it all over again.

Based on his appearances on UpUpDownDown, I think it's safe to say Kalisto is at least as good as Rey Mysterio ever was on the mic. I'm not entirely sure that's a compliment, but it means he's easily capable of filling the role they signed him to play.

Johnny Gargano and Tomaso Ciampa (incidentally, two more names that Dusty would have put a stop to)

Johnny Gargano is actually his real name (Tommaso's real last name is Whitney), but as of right now they haven't been signed by WWE. There could be a name change if that happens. (Remember that Kenta was originally introduced as such at Takeover and then publicly announced the new name he was assuming.)

Tenken you stole my heart with all this. Funniest thing I've read all week, that includes the headlines of Trump's run for being Presidential candidate.

I'm curious, was their some special thing Dusty said when giving Summer Rae her name change? A google search for Summer Rae commenting about her name change is like shooting a pinhead with a shotgun. Did Dusty have a thing with proper names?

That Peyton Royce does not skip leg and glutes day. I'm in so far. Both lady jobbers are from Australia much like our own Heel-Emma. Could a new lady heel stable be forming? If so, we gotta go with Emmalution.

Summer Rae was on Unfiltered with Renee Young and they brought up her original ring name was Kylie Summers. Dusty didn't like it. He also said whatever letter your name ends with is what your last name should start with, and only be one or two syllables.

They also talked about her time in the Lingerie Football League and Mark Henry complimenting her about it, and how she was discovered by Jerry Lawler at a comic convention.

That's fantastic. I figured they'd just burn the rematch on a TV episode so that Sasha could focus on RAW, but now they've already got me looking forward to next month's Takeover. Plus, with what they've set up so far, I bet Balor and Joe go all the way to the finals of the Tag Classic, where Joe can turn and set up the next title feud without having to do an NXT title match that might show up the women. Well, might try, anyways.

If there is a tag team title match I'm sure it will have some kind of wacky stipulation, like a tables match or maybe some kind of "French Rules" ala Quebec Rules used by the Quebecers, to allow La Resistance and Conway to cheat.
