Okay guys, this is a pretty big weekend for WWE, with both RAW and NXT having major shows. So I want to talk for a minute about go-home shows. You know, the last show before an event, that's supposed to set all the angles in motion and get you fired up for the big matches. I didn't actually say anything in the RAW thread, but let me talk about it here for a minute. RAW literally opened with a guy in the ring reading the Summerslam card to you. I don't know who told HHH that was compelling television, but they were Wrong. So Wrong. Throughout the remaining 2.5 hours, RAW continued to do almost nothing I remember 3 days later. There was a pretty good contract signing bit somewhere in the middle, but the rest? Gone. Last night's NXT show? Different story. Spoiler for my recap - there were no real matches on the show. Everything was a squash. But everything meant something. Everything advanced an angle, either for Takeover, or for next week's show. Every squash was an excuse for someone to talk, or for somebody to get beat up on his way to Broolyn. This is how you make people excited to see what's coming next.

Oh, and HHH? If you spend 20 minutes reading a ppv card to me again, I'm turning your fucking show off. That's a promise, buddy.

NXT itself opens with none other than GM Regal. He's here to bring Bayley and Sasha Banks out for the official contract signing for their match in Brooklyn. It's now being billed as a double main event, presumably because this is their last chance to bill Sasha Banks as a main event in NXT. I'd take it, too. For the record, yes, Sasha's still got her contract-signing stamp with her. The challenger signs first, but before she does, Bayley gets on the mic to let us all know that she knows that we know that she's going to win on Saturday. Hey, it's nobody's fault that the division got gutted and she got left behind. Sasha Banks' retort is to tell Bayley that "it's not that you're not good, it's just that you're not me," which is the most Ric Flair thing that Ric Flair never said. Both competitors sign the contract, Regal initials it, and Banks turns her back to leave. However, Bayley's whole gimmick is that she's a huge fan of wrestling, and she knows that you can't just have a contract signing without a brawl. She tells Sasha that she saw what Sasha did to Becky Lynch at her last contract signing, and that she's ready to throw down right now. Instead of obliging, Sasha takes some serious digs at Bayley, telling her that she's not a threat like Charlotte or Becky, and that there's a reason the three of them are on RAW and Bayley isn't. Ouch. Banks takes off, but she only makes it halfway up the ramp before Bayley decides to solve her problems with violence. It takes four refs to pull Bayley off of Sasha, and honestly, I'm surprised that's enough.

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. The opening segment of this show just took the fait acompli of Bayley having to become the women's champion, and make it a compelling story even though the outcome still isn't really in doubt. That's how you do it.

Our first squash of the night comes courtesy of Tyler Breeze. He comes out with a replica Jushin Liger mask. His jobber eats a supermodel kick in very short order, and that's ballgame.
Match Rating: Nah, I'm Not Doing These This Week
After, Breeze puts the mask on the jobber, talks some shit about Liger, and hits the Beauty Shot on his still mostly-unconscious opponent. Then, he takes the mask back off, and walks on it on his way out.

Next squash sets up a match for next week's show. By the way, next week is a special show from Brookly, I assume it's a sort of consolation prize for all the guys that had to be left off Takeover. Anyoo, this is an 8-man squash featuring the Hype Bros. and Enzo and Cass. They'll be fighting Jordan, Gable, Dash and Dawson next week. The squash features Big Cass delivering a Big Boot to somebody that I would describe as an unlicensed Jeff Hardy, which knocks him about ten feet off the apron, but is otherwise unnoteworthy. Rocket Launcher scores the pin.

Afterwards, we go backstage to the previously mentioned foursome of Jordan, Gable, D&D. They are asked if they're impressed; they are not. Why would you even ask that? Instead, they run down their own accomplishments over the last few weeks (which are, honestly, also not really impressive), and Gable finally gets everyone to deliver on "Ready, Willing, and Gable." Good for him.

Next squasher is Samoa Joe. Chokeslam, Kokina Clutch, that is literally the entire match. Afterwards, to absolutely no one's surprise, he gets jumped by Baron Corbin. To everyone's surprise, Corbin gets the better of him and lands the End of Days. Gotta do something to put some suspense on that Takeover match, I guess.

Bull Dempsey's making his return in Brooklyn next week. The new Bull in front of his hometown crowd could be fun.

The night's final squash is delivered by the tag champs. Our jobbers get in a surprising amount of offense actually, including a really pretty gutwrench spinning suplex from Sawyer Fulton. See, it was so nice I learned his name! It's kind of irrelevant, though, 'cause the champs hit their finisher (Give It A Name!) and that's that. Their win brings out the Vaudvillains, who, in the spirit of sportsmanship and idiocy, intend to reveal their entire plan to Blake, Murphy, and Bliss in advance of Takeover. Bliss, however, doesn't want to let them get it out, because she is also stupidly overconfident. She makes her way down the ramp while Aiden English delivers a deep cut Saved By The Bell reference, and slaps the challengers across their faces not once, but twice. With that, the Vaudvillains instead decide that they'll reveal their plans to the world Saturday in Brooklyn.

Before our final segment, the commentary team makes some announcements for the matches on next week's show. In addition to the 8-man and the return of Bull, we're also getting a four-way between Charlotte, Becky Lynch, Emma, and Dana Brooke. That's going to be great. They also announce Carmella versus Eva Marie. That should be...greeaat. I, I can't even.

Our final segment is not a match, but a main event promo. It's Kevin Owens' final declaration before Takeover, which is probably as good a way as any to tell everyone that he ain't coming back to NXT television after this. He comes out carrying a ladder with one arm, which is actually a much better way to demonstrate how much stronger he is than me than anything else I've ever seen him do. I've never tried to suplex another person, but I've moved a ladder, and, spoiler folks, I could not do what he's doing. It's a small thing, but sometimes it's nice to have a frame of reference. Anyhoo, the very first thing KO does on the mic is call out the Full Sail crowd for their hypocrisy, the way they'll cheer for heels when it's convenient for them, and the way they boo Takeover happening in Broolyn, even though it represents the highest level of success NXT has yet achieved, simply because it means it doesn't belong to them anymore. Hmmm. That's actually...a really good point. Dammit Kevin, don't make me be on your side! Fortunately for me, his next move is to climb the ladder and start ragging on Finn Balor and getting really petulant about how he shouldn't have lost the title in the first place and how he's going to beat the shit out of Balor on Saturday, and just generally talking a good game the way KO always does. This, of course, brings out Balor. But he doesn't just stroll down to the ring. His music hits, and then suddenly he's just sitting on the turnbuckle. I assume it was just good old-fashioned trick photography, but it's genuinely jarring in a way that the Undertaker's teleport hasn't been for some time. He's just suddenly...there. It freaks out KO, too. He slowly gets off the ladder, but Balor waits for him. It's not until he's back down on the canvas that Balor lunges at him. Balor quickly takes the advantage, and tosses the ladder at Owens. Owens ducks it, and takes off down the ramp. Balor sets up the ladder, climbs up it himself, and tell Owens that he's not just going to win, he's not just going to beat Owens, he's going to shut his mouth for good.

That's how you do it! That's how you sell an event. If you weren't already signed up for the Network, you would be. If you had plans to do something else on Saturday, I hope you just changed them. The double main event feature two matches where, honestly, the outcome can only go one way. Sasha Banks and Kevin Owens both have to be written off the show. They're done in NXT, they need to concentrate on RAW. Hell, they've both got Summerslam matches the next night. But they've done everything in their power to make me want to see those matches anyways, to make me want to see their opponents get the best of them and triumph and run them out of NXT to go do RAW forever. When did RAW forget that a go-home show is supposed to make you excited? Because I'm not excited for Summerslam, even though it has a really good chance of being a really good show. I am, as I always am, excited for Takeover.

The "double main event" hype still makes me hope they get extra ballsy and put the ladies on last.

Speaking of which, fine segment between the two. Sasha took (one last?) shot at the NXT crowd and put down Bayley, which adds to the underdog win. Both came out of this looking great.

In the other double main event promo, Kevin Owens was a prick as always and it works.

Everything else was what it was, servicable hype for Takeover and next Wednesday's Takeover Jr. I have minor fears of Dana Brooke winning the four way and becoming Bayley's first challenger, but maybe they'll throw sworn Bayley enemy Emma a bone.

I really think the divas match should be the main event. Owens vs Balor will be great, but it's a really just a contractually obligated rematch. Sasha vs Bayley is the culmination of a year(s) long journey, similar to Sami Zayns title match.

While you're not wrong, the NXT title match is, number one, the match for the biggest prize in NXT, and as such deserves the final spot, and number two, is a gimmick match. There's not any realistic chance that Sasha/Bayley goes on last, although I expect them to absolutely murder each other trying to outshine the guys.

This is my thinking as well. That, and right now would be a good time to capitalize on the "we let our women main event the show" press they would get. They've given the NXT ladies main event slots at house shows, why not use your biggest NXT show to date to make that impact? There's no shame in doing the ladder match a few matches prior, having a cool down match (sorry, tag title match or Apollo Crews), and then letting the divas go out there and end the show with a woman celebrating. I think it's an idea they have considered, at least.

Also, Bayley should have busted out something like "I know you have a match at SummerSlam the next night, and I know you aren't 100% focused on me because that's in your mind too."

And this is how you recap a show. I don't say this enough, but I really appreciate how you talk about this show I never watch but probably should be watching. I hope some other site is paying you, 'cause I'm broke. ;-)

Praise from Caesar! Unfortunately, I'm the kind of dummy that does this stuff for free. For fun, even!

And, you should totally watch the show.

I just realized they are running Takeover and Summer Slam on back to back nights ... add Raw on Monday and that is a lot of WWE to consume. Takeover is the must watch event of the weekend though and even if I'm not incredibly high on the weekly show right now I've never been letdown by their specials. That 4th hour getting tacked on to Summer Slam is a killer.

Owens is really going to need a win at Summer Slam or his PPV/Special streak is going to look Dean Ambrose-ish.

This isn't just for us, the IWC. Look at the reactions from the crowd after the Benoit-Angle match at Royal Rumble, or the pop Matt Hardy got Thrusday. This may cause the IWC to collectively stain their undies, but the casual fan can catch on, too.
