This is show is so Two-Face even Harvey Dent is SMH. We get Jon returning to the Wall with the Wildings to a chill reception from everyone. The former Lord Commander had a moment where he was not going to let Jon back in. Ollie is giving him death glares to Jon's chagrin.

Arya is on her way to her money changer target and gets sidetracked when the guy who killed her first teacher show up at the exact same moment. Why, because plot. Apparently, he likes them young which I hope to God, they don't plan to do what I think they are going to do here. Arya lies to Jorque and he gives her a look after she goes to clean up one of his dead bodies.

And now this. Ramsey's plan of twenty guy works, because all the bad guy plans work that is why. They burn Stannis' foods supplies while the fire witch watches on. Stannis sends Davos away to ask Jon for help. Davos has a nice scene with Stanis' daughter. A scene that sets up another scene where Stannis talks to his daughter who says she would do anything for him. Stannis takes it as a sign and BURNS HIS OWN DAUGHTER ALIVE!!!!

I can't wait for the G.R.R Martin EW article on this. This doesn't happen in the books, it actually happens to his men who are near mutiny. I was glad they showed his army look away in disgust. His wife finally cares about her daughter at the end and is held back by faceless minions. Stannis kills his daughter to sit on the Throne in which he has no heirs. Unless, its Melisandra which she only breeds demons, so good luck with that.

The final scene sorta makes up for this. Danny and crew are there for the opening of the Fighting Pits. Her new asshole husband seems to be gloating over all this to no one's joy. Ser Jorah enters the ultimate Elimination Chamber. Six men in only one survives. Jorah with a bit of luck and help from at least on contestant wins. That one contestant was a guy from Mereen, who the people wanted to win, but Jorah pulls a Batista.

Danny is happy til he throws a javelin at her. Which hits one of the Sons of Harpies who was going to kill her. We get a decent fighting and running through the arena. The Mereen asshole ends up dying to the shock of most of the cast who thought he wasn't behind all of this. It ends with the group being surrounded by the Harpies. Out of nowhere Drogan appears. He burns most of the Harpies alive. Yet, the harpies magically have javelins and attack him. Danny rides him out of there while leaving the rest of her party behind. A total dick move in any RPG or MMO campaign.

So, this was the great episode 9 of Season 5. Its mostly a flop. If you use logic even the big sweet ending has shitty CGI with the flying. It also has plot holes with the harpies not knowing about the dragon yet a bunch of faceless scrubs have weapons that can hurt it ready to go. Then as I said before, there are Tyrion, Jorah and friends at the mercy of the Harpies. They really should be dead when we came back next week, but they won't at least not Jorah. Who according to Stannis defenders be burned alive, because he is doomed anyway even though there seems to be a cure for greyscale.

If you choose to give up on Game of Thrones after the burning scene, feel free. Thankfully this was not their finale even though I thought Danny's dragon rider was going to be the big moment since it was in Dance of Dragons. The next big moment from the book is probably going to happen next week and then you will really want to quit.

I think your assessment of the final scene in the fighting pits is spot on. It's surprising that what appears to be normal spears being able to hurt Drogon. Perhaps the dragon isn't done growing so that's why the spears hurt it? Whatever the case, if they went to Westeros with the dragons tomorrow it'd be a short fight as a million arrows come at them. Also, you're right about Dany fleeing and leaving the rest, are we to believe that the Sons of the Harpy just disappeared when Dany left? Was their only goal to kill Dany and with her flying away, they ceased?

Just wanted to add that it looks like Jorah, who has greyscale, touched just about everyone in that arena, especially Dany.

Oh, and after watching Shireen get burned alive, I'm now done rooting for any character with any real backstory whatsoever. I'm just rooting for pretty much everyone to die now. (Seriously, who am I supposed to back in a Stannis vs. the Boltons fight?)

Brienne!

Also, I will NOT be known as the King That Ran but the King That Burned His Daughter Alive, that's cool.

Jaime Lannister and Bronn pretty much gets away scott free, too. The guard elbows Bronn which is a lot better than say, getting his hand chopped off. Not only that Jaime gets to take his daughter/niece back to Kings Landing, too. Just gotta bring Trystane with them and let him join the small council to replace Oberon.

I've been a SOIAF fan for years because the books never shied away from the dark side when darkness was appropriate and felt like the truth. Which is a whole different aesthetic from grimdark for the sake of grimdark. I'm glad I stopped watching after Sansa's wedding, though I wish I hadn't seen that in the first place.

I had been so optimistic they would do something interesting this season by speeding up the plotline. It kicked off very well, but now it's starting to smell like one of those anime series which had to finish up before the manga's full run, and utterly screwed the pooch once it got away from the source material.

GRRM I have always relied on to walk the fine line between hope and despair. He has a sense of balance even when he's pulling the rug out from under you. HBO apparently can't even see a line. I feel like they are perpetually looking for the next big shocker instead of telling the story, and by now the whole thing rings false as hell.

The Shireen scene was GRRM's idea. It was hard to watch, but wasn't totally out of place for Stannis. He did abandon one brother And kill the other.

From what I'm hearing (it's all hearsay until the book gets written) GRRM told the showrunners that Shireen does eventually suffer that fate... much later, in a totally different context. Knowing him, in his plotline there is a lot more at stake (heh) than how the show placed her death.

With plot and character justification done well enough, yes, you can pull off just about anything in fiction. The heavier you want to go, the harder you have to work as a writer to earn it. Something like burning innocent girls at the stake (or raping them, for that matter) is very expensive, in plot terms. Doesn't sound like they earned it.

It also doesn't help that some of the killings-off this season (Ser Barristan) smack of, 'OK, time to cut payroll.'

Yeah, it makes really no sense.

So currently, Stannis was defeated at the Blackwater, has a minor victory over the Wildlings at the Wall, and is getting his ass handed to him before the battle even starts at Winterfell. He has a Hand, whom he ignores in favor of some religious fanatic - and, in spite of burning alive a dozen or so family members at her consult, is no closer to the crown then he was when he started. So his solution to his current dilemma - double down on the advice from the crazy woman and burn his daughter alive (arguably, the most innocent and sweetest character on the entire show). What!!?!

So let's say you're a troop in Stannis' army. You're basically 1 for 2 - and you're already losing battle three - and your King just sacrificed his teenage daughter - YOUR PRINCESS - over the objections of your Queen. At this point, what's your motivation for sticking with this guy? Do you really want to see him take the throne? I wouldn't.

The thing is - I actually liked the ending with Daenerys flying off (yeah, it was left a bit open ended as to the fate of her friends, but I don't think it's too big of a stretch to believe that the SoH retreated after all of that), but after the whole Stannis debacle, it really didn't have the intended impact. The wind gets let out of the sails when you burn teenage girls alive.

I think the writers are WAY too into 'OMG WTF'-ing the audience that they're forgetting the story needs to make sense. This was all way too gratuitous and sloppy - and it makes watching the show on Sunday nights a bit of a chore.

If see the looks on the face of the troops while its going on, they seem to be utterly disgusted. The only ones who did nothing were the head guards who kept Stannis' wife back. In the books, there is a lot of talk of people leaving the army and they burn the deserters, they can find. Most would rather die in the snow.

I am not sure how Stannis wins the fight, but all Melisandra said is there will be a giant battle. Also, isn't she missing one of the people that were supposed to be dead by now like Theon's Dad. She also didn't see the fire attack coming even though fire is her big thing.

I am dreading reading the books if I have to go through that again.

The show has totally disregarded hundreds and hundreds of pages that were dedicated to the Greyjoys storyline. IMO that disregard buys a veritable cornucopia of patience and forgiveness.

Their motivation is likely money, since his army is mostly comprised of sellswords that were paid for out of whatever money he was floated by The Iron Bank.

If there's anyone left that's into this show and doesn't read this weekly Grantland column (grantland.com), it's good reading (although long-winded at times).

Didn't Abraham almost sacrifice Issac to prove he was faithful to God? Not to get Sunday morning up in here, but religious fanatics will do mostly ANYTHING for God's favor if there is a promise on the horizon for a great harvest, winning a war, or a reward in the afterlife. Ask the Aztec's how many child sacrifices they did to appease a God or the high demand for it in parts of Africa today for fucking witchcraft purposes.

Stannis is desperate religious loon being manipulated by a demanding "prophet" of God. When we first meet his daughter she's locked away in the castle like a prisoner by him and her mother has vials with her stillborn children in them. I'm surprised Shireen lasted as long as she did.

This show's gonna have a drop off of fans after this season because of the deviation from the books and the gloom and doom with slivers of hope we are getting this season. I'm glad because I think some fans are only reacting on more subjective emotion without using objective reasoning while watching this show. The ones reacting on a downhill emotive reaction are a very small but loud vocal minority who could affect GoT's writing team in a hasty way to appease them and avoid bad press for an otherwise excellent series so far.

As I (and others) have said before, the deviation from the books is a welcome 'addition by subtraction', but characters repeatedly doing nonsensical things for shock value is getting silly and downright tiresome.

As the Grantland article nicely points out:

Stannis has been depicted as one of the greatest generals in the realm. He held the Storm’s End against a one-year siege by eating rats. So if the device that gets Stannis to the place where he’s desperate enough to burn his only daughter and heir alive is (1) some snow and (2) a sudden and convenient ineptitude at doing war stuff, that feels off to me.

Yeah, I don't think 'subjective emotion' is the issue here.

Saying "some snow" seems like totally missing the point that they were in. It's winter in Westeros. Once the snow is down it's not going away for years. They were already completely fucked before Ramsay torched supplies.

He explained his reasonings as far as "war stuff" to Davos a few episodes earlier. Castle Black didn't have enough stores to feed them so they couldn't winter there. Heading to Winterfell was pretty much the only choice he had. He made an educated gamble and lost and got caught in the snow.

I don't feel that it was completely out of character for Stannis to do what he did but I think they should have showed it being much much more difficult for him instead of seeming to be almost a quick and easy decision. But that's more due to the time limitations of an hour long episode.

What if Ramsay didn't assemble his ninja squad yet and the fire zealot witch set the fires? I can't think of a purpose for it, but it's right up her manipulative alley. Possibly to break his last familial bond? She already killed his brother, she broke the marriage tie (which wasn't strong to begin with) by getting strong-morals Stannis to commit adultery. Maybe killing final familial bond is the only way to be the sword of the one true god. Or maybe she's just batshit crazy and wants Stannis all to herself. Whatever the reason, the result sucked and made it difficult to stay invested in the rest of the episode.

Why is the cgi so terrible on this show?

Flash, a CW show, blows them away at times. Game of Thrones crying poor would be really stupid of them since their merch is everywhere.

My insane theory is Melisandra is in league with the White Walkers.

This would be great reasoning if the show wasn't on super premium cable, wildly successful, and it wasn't 2015.

I don't think there's any theory that is too insane to be valid when it comes to this show. In the beginning, we had an idea about the waters we were swimming in because it followed the source material. Now? All bets are off and anything is possible. Clearly there is something up with her.

This stuff is EXTREMELY hard to do well - even for wildly successful, super premium cable shows in 2015.

By comparison, Avengers had a budget of $220 million for 2h20min of running time. GoT is roughly $6 million per episode - so I'm happy to grant them some leeway in this area. Frankly, I'm impressed with what they're able to pull off given the circumstances (a new season every year, 10 full hours, etc).

I think Melisandre sensed a Bastard of Royal Blood in the camp in that moment that she stepped outside the tent before the fires erupted. Ramsay will clearly be in her sights when Stannis and his troops arrive at Winterfell.
