I don't think Orton is boring as a face. He's certainly a bit different, but you can tell that he's enjoying himself out there, and that does go a long way.
Go back and watch him in the opening segment again. When New Day's music fires up and they come out to interrupt, it takes a moment for it to sink in for Orton, but then he starts getting into the beat of their theme song and moving his head in time with it, before the camera cuts away. Later in the same promo, when New Day is trying to get them to clap, Orton actually claps as instructed, and tries to get Roman to clap too.
(New Day then continued their promo as if no clapping had occurred, because not everyone is good at improv)
This kind of stuff is the face version of the last year's unpredictable Orton chaos. "Ring the bell? There's no bell to ring!"

Where has this Randy Orton been his entire career? I like this guy.

Sounds like a labrum tear, which if true, sucks. He should be able to wrestle with it (and probably has been, given the non-contact nature of this one.)

This is almost exactly what I was going to write. I've been championing the amazingness of Randall Keith Orton since he started yelling at inanimate objects. Really, you can go back to the consistently excellent matches he had with Christian and see that a motivated and invested Randy Orton is one of the top people they have. His long periods of uninterested mediocrity were brutal to watch, but he hasn't been back there in a while. He set the tone for the night with the little things that you mentioned. He was having fun. And holy shit was he over. He's gotten leaps and bounds better on the mic. He is different as a face, and I think they're trying to find that perfect zone of tweener with him. He hit an RKO on the chosen new face at the end of the show. Granted he got a huge pop but that has more to do with RAW audiences feelings about Reigns than it does with Orton's character development.

(Insert Randy Orton Does Jumping Splits dot gif)
The most damning thing about the way the company is run: from their various, never-aired-on-TV interview bits, we knew the New Day guys had the potential to be incredibly entertaining if ever given a chance. From his appearances virtually everywhere but on actual programs put on by the actual WWE, we know John Cena has the potential to be a wildly entertaining TV presence if presented in any way other than the way they've presented him for, like, the last nine years. From the bits of things like him doing jumping splits and yelling at audience members and saying things like "we just wanted to see Goldberg spear some dudes!" on DVD featurettes and being a Gospel Music Enthusiast, we know that Randy Orton is a friggin' amazing, weird, hilarious dude.
Release the controls, WWE. Let your independent contractors pull you out of that nosedive, WWE. Pull yourself away from total self-destruction.

Nonsense. Vince is a genius. Mason the Mutilator and The Ring Master would have been over huge if he didn't allow independent contractors to have a say. Last time he makes that mistake.
Gotta concur that Orton's current character is hilarious and amazing. He really did seem bored as hell for a lot of the Authority stuff and Evolution reunion, but when he's enjoying himself, he can make magic happen. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed him starting to dance to New Day's theme song and actually playing along with the clapping, and if he's actually into Gospel, that only makes it more entertaining ... considering New Day's initial promos with the gospel singers, who still feature in their entrance music.
I've been disappointed before by this company, but I'm starting to become cautiously optimistic about the direction they've been in since Mania. Now all I can hope for is hope that Vince doesn't screw things up again. It'd be nice if Bryan could come back too, but at this point if he's just going to aggravate the neck injury, I'd rather he think of his health than a few more five star matches.
May is the month where Raw truly goes to die for me since I watch national hockeying play-offs but I'll do a whole post a week later, sure.
Hey wait, that's the first time Ambrose ever beat Rollins, right? It's like how you can only get pregnant after you stop trying. Or wait, is that the metaphor for finding your keys. Either way.
Is Ambrose just in there so neither Orton nor Reigns has to get 1-2-3'd? Well. Based on all preexisting evidence we may as well just assume yes for now. But Dean's addition can still only make things better, since like everyone else has said, laying the groundwork for Ambrose and Ziggler as one-off Rollins challengers would've been time better spent than doing it with Kane. Also, crowd partisanship in the match will be pretty interesting, is Dean still the people's champ or has the great playing field-leveling worked at ensuring that both Reigns and his peers get the same "sure. good for you!" reactions.
Orton clapping to New Day almost double-handedly salvaged the entire calendar year. Team Randy 4 life; after all these years he's even found a personal solution to unnatural dialogue by manically rushing through the diction like an enunciating madman.
If not the Shield, at least the Wyatts are apparently getting back together? Like they should've just done at the Rumble/never been separated to begin with?
Antonio Cesaro in being an amazing babyface shocker. Everyone already knew that 400 days ago but, you know, he's Swiss, shrug?
From the main page at WWE.com, it says it all: Damn I wish Y2J would have won. But what seems to be the common phrase that I agree with, at least Goldberg or Nash didn't win.
