Okay, here's an object lesson: When you don't start every show with a promo, then on the few occasions when you do, it actually *means something*. Case in point; tonight's show opens up with Kevin Owens coming out to the ring to chat. The crowd is actually cheering for him as he comes out, but he stalls (That's his move, Tony!), and the crowd turns on him fast. When he finally does start talking, it's not anything you wouldn't expect. He's not thrilled about what Sami Zayne did to him last week, but in clear defiance of what has been his pattern thus far, he actually calls Sami out for a confrontation. What he gets instead is GM Regal. Regal would like to remind everyone that wrestlers don't make matches, HE DOES. However, KO is a disrespectful shit, and tells Regal he didn't ask for the GM, he asked for Sami. This gets the result he's looking for, as Zayn comes down to the ring. Now, Regal doesn't want a circus here (he knows what industry he works in, right?), so he instead decided to confirm my guess from last week and sets a title match for the next Takeover event on May 20. KO's ready to fight, but he doesn't want to put up the title. However, Sami baits him by saying that Owens' entire career has been in his shadow, and if he wants out of it, the only way he's getting a match is to put up the title. It's an awesome callback to the start of their feud, and just like Sami before him, KO takes the bait. We've got our main event for the 20th set.

You know, I absolutely hate chickenshit heels, but I love how much of a coward Kevin Owens is.

We check in with our commentary team, and this week we're back to a three man booth as Byron Saxton joins Rich and Corey. I'd like to see them get back to a rotating commentary team to keep things fresh, but their announcer roster has been severely depleted lately. It looks like they may have a new guy on deck, however, as we go backstage to [Guy Who's Name I Did Not Catch] is shilling the NXT house show tour. I'm hoping to catch the Albany show, and if it sells out before I can get tickets, I will be disappointed. Anyhoo, he gets interrupted by Carmella, Enzo, and Cass, who have become a living monolith of pure sound, in the presence of which silence cannot survive. Carmella gets tired of their threeway bickering, and ditches her boys. As they walk off, Blake and Murphy roll in. They start talking shit about Enzo and Cass, but Carmella's not hearing it this week. She tells the two of them to take a walk, too. This brings in Alexa Bliss (whew, this is a long segment), who, out of nowhere, rolls up to tell Carmella she should act with a little more class. Well, I mean, not completely out of nowhere; Carmella is not a classy lady. Carmella piefaces her and walks off, leaving Alexa to be comforted by...Blake and Murphy?!

That was interesting, but long, and now I don't know where this angle is going anymore. Backstage, Sami Zayn is signing the contract for the 20th, and Regal lets him (and us) know that it's now official. They get interrupted by Alex Riley, who still hasn't learned a damn thing. He wants KO again, but this time Regal tells him that he's out of opportunities. Personally, I think he's just trying to keep a wrestler from getting murdered on his watch. Bad press for the house shows, you know? Anyhoo, Sami's all like, "Hey I like to wrestle! Wrestle me!" So that's what they decide to do.

Enzo and Cass have a non-title match against Blake and Murphy next. There's really nothing here that you haven't seen before (except maybe Blake's hair. What's up with Blake's hair?), until the finish. Murphy gets in Carmella's face, but she ain't got nothin' for him, so he turns around and eats a big boot followed by a Rocket Launcher, giving the win to Enzo and Cass.
Match Rating: Confusing, Mainly Because I Am No Longer Certain That Carmella Is Turning Heel, Even Though She Should.

There's a Becky Lynch promo package next. It's all well and good until she drops "NBexT" again, which is every bit as awful as it was the first time she said it.

Backstage, Bayley's looking for all of her shit, but it turns out that Emma stole it to screw with her. You used to be so nice, Emma!

There's also another truly terrible Baron Corbin package, once again featuring 1997's best green-screen effects. I think he likes hurting people, so he's a heel now, I guess? It's not very clear, and his promo work is not very good.

Bayley's got a match next, against... oh geez no, it's Dana Brooke again. Her entrance hasn't gotten any better. It's three motions, over and over again. She's like a create-a-wrestler from 10 years ago. Bayley tries her best here, but there's only so much she can do. Full credit to Dana, she does a leg submission move that looks really nice, but other than that, if it requires any input from her, Dana just looks completely incompetent in the ring. For the finish, Emma comes out to Bayley's music, with all of her stuff, causing a huge spectacle that distracts her long enough for Dana to hit her Falcon Arrow-thingy.
Match Rating: Send Dana Brooke Back To The Performance Center.

GM Regal announces another match for the 20th, a triple threat for the #1 contendership (aside; I love that there is always a #1 contender to the champion, like it's an official position). It's going to be Tyler Breeze vs. Hideo Itami vs. Finn Balor. Really, you can't go wrong with any of those choices.

Speaking of Hideo Itami, he's up next against a visiting Adam Rose. This should be really good if Rose brings his A-Game. I mean, he's actually got a lot of talent, even if he's mostly being squandered on RAW. Anyhoo, back to the match. Oh, wait, it ended while I was typing that.
Match Rating: Squash With All The Trimmings.

Backstage, Bayley wants her shit back. She can't find Emma tonight, but when she does, she's going to settle this. Permanently.

Becky Lynch is out for a match against Some Jobber. The jobber is very tall, and that's about all there is to say here. Becky beats the shit out of her and gets an armbar submission.
Match Rating: Wait, An Armbar?

Rhyno has a promo backstage. It's very throwback-y, set in a hallway with dim lighting. It's the total ECW experience here. Anyhoo, the point is that Rhyno is calling out Baron Corbin, because Rhyno is the guy that hurts people around here.

Our main event once again, somehow, inexplicably features Alex Riley. He's up against Sami Zayn, as earlier advertised, but the real story here is that KO is on commentary. I actually miss a lot of this match, because I'm listening to Owens. He makes a lot of really good points about his career and history with Zayn (especially one really good observation that he's giving Riley waaay too much offense, which he credits to the beating he gave Zayn), while still making it very clear that he is a coward, and wants no part of a fair fight against him. Eventually, Sami low bridges ARy out of the ring into the Danger Zone, and a big dive later is looking to wrap this up. KO wraps it up for him. He jumps Sami from behind, ending the match in a DQ.
Match Rating: What Match?
Afterwards, KO goes to finish what he started...with Alex Riley. While Zayn is down, and there's no one else to stop him, Owens delivers a nasty apron powerbomb to Riley. Riley takes it bad, too, on the spine instead of across the shoulders. KO stops to taunt Sami on his way up the ramp, and then laughs maniacally as he walks backstage.

It's funny. This show's only real standout moment to me was the promo at the top of the show, but I still really liked this episode. I think, even though there wasn't much to write home about in any given segment, there was just so much content tonight that it held my interest all the way through. I don't think that I'd like to see every show structured like this, but it was a nice change of pace.

You know, I don't really see it as much as Owens being a "coward" so much as he's working to minimize the chances of losing the championship. That may sound like semantics but let me see if I can explain.

Most wrestlers want the title to prove that they're the best, and while I'm sure that factors into it with Owens too I get the impression that his primary reason for wanting the championship is the increased pay so that he can more successfully support his family.

He's not afraid of getting beaten up, or losing respect, or not having a fancy gold belt. He doesn't want to lose the money associated with it. This need to provide for his family trumps everything, which causes him to do "cowardly" actions, and avoid having to defend the title when possible.

It's a lot more nuanced than the usual WWE stuff, and all they need is a single tear-filled promo in front of his wife and kid telling them why he can't support them anymore after losing the title to skyrocket him to Faceville. But until then he can continue to be a heel that has a (somewhat) plausible reason for all his heeling tactics.

Also, I was surprised to find Dana Brook wasn't as bad as I thought she was going to be.

I have no idea what Cass/Enzo/Carmella were talking over each other about but Enzo definitely said something about a Nature Valley Granola Bar in there.

If you've never taken a look at Becky's Twitter feed, she LOVES bad puns. And her armbar finisher is pretty awesome, her facial expressions make it look even more painful.

Brooke's match was way better than her last one, she just has to stop with the awkward "sexy" posing.

I got presale tickets for the NXT Philly show...and then they announced a second show for the following night, based just on the *presale* demand alone!

Kevin Owens is not a "father simply trying to make money to provide for his family". He is a bully who is a coward when somebody steps up to him and he uses that "family" line to try to justify his actions. How does powerbombing guys on the ring apron trying to cripple them help his family? It doesn't. And even if providing for his family is all he cares about, that still is somewhat heelish as to him being a good father is just making money to throw at his wife and kids rather than, y'know, setting a good example and being a good role model for his kids.

Dana Brooke looked better this time around. I can tell quite a few weeks have gone by since her on-air debut match, because she had blonde hair and heavier makeup and this recent match she is platinum and looks slimmed down a few pounds. Oddly enough I see potential in her. I like her yelling at her opponents. Parts of me greatly appreciated her awkward sexy poses.

Man. they are really stalling on Hideo using the GTS officially.

I think both of you guys are right on your Kevin Owens opinions. On one hand Owens is a proud family man who isn't afraid to fight anyone and even get his ass kicked as long as he keeps making Champion-level paychecks. He'll fight you all week until his mealticket, the NXT Title is involved, then the wins and losses truly matter. He is also a bully (which he masterfully sells by forcing the announce team to agree with his every statement and not question him) and has a hair trigger mean streak which goes off on anyone who even remotely confronts his motives.

He's the only guy on the NXT roster right now who based on his belief that everything he does is for his family, constant invasion of personal space to antagonize, and total disregard for rules as well as handling critiques of his character with bursts of violence I feel like he may apron powerbomb authority figures like Regal and Triple H if they said the wrong thing to him, maybe a few of the NXT Divas. Owens talks and walks as if making him champion means he runs the prisonyard and his actions aren't to be questioned. If you question him shame on you for debasing, in his mind, a dad fighting for his families future. You'll never make that mistake again...

Cole: "Yeah, thanks to Kane. You should buy Kane a Rolex watch for what he did for you."
Rollins: "Oh don't be silly, Kane doesn't wear watches."

Funny, but I don't really consider him a coward.
He's just a very smart guy who gets out of the way when things don't go his way in the ring.
And outside the ring he is just playing mind games.

Looking back at his ROH and Indy years, this seems how he's Always been doing things.
Messing with Generico's head then with Cornette until he got kicked out-then returned to get what he wanted (the title)
His character has quite a few layers to it.
He's a complete jerk who does what he wants because he loves his family and he loves wrestling.
And he gets what he wants because he's willing to manipulate everyone, he's willing to make himself look like a coward if it means he can then circle you and beat you up.

You shut your mouth! Baron Corbin's Sin City-esque promos are the greatest thing ever and I refuse to hear differently. You just don't understand him! None of you do! Also, I'm pretty sure his promo was about turning all the jobbers that live under the ring into his Werewolf pack. Or something.

I continue to love the multi-layer relationship between Zayn and Owens. It is some of the best stuff I have seen. really, I just continue to love NXT. My only complaint is the lack of Vaudvillians lately. If Dana Brooke continues to unmpress, maybe they can cut her screen time and send them back out.

Update - I got my tickets to the NXT show! I wish I'd known about presale codes earlier, because it means I missed out on the floor seats, but I still wound up with a fairly decent view of the ring (I think, anyway).

Man, I don't know how to tell you this, but that's basically a textbook example of cowardice. KO, we are all in agreement, is a bully, and as such has no problem at all fighting people that he's tougher than. He's not worried about Alex Fucking Riley. When he finally runs up against somebody that he's actually concerned might take his title, Sami Zayn, he doesn't want any part of that. And I think the issue might be that, while I am adamant that he is a total coward, it's not that he's afraid of getting beat up or losing a match. He's afraid of losing the title, and will do any weasel thing he can to make sure that doesn't happen. He won't face a guy head-on if there's half a chance of losing the belt - unless he gets suckered in, like Sami did to him.
