This is really awful. Apparently a 619 by Rey somehow got botched at a Tijuana event, & El Hijo ended up with severe throat/neck trauma, either from the rope or getting kicked, and died. I can't think of a serious injury from a botched move in a high-level match, much less a death, since Droz & D'Lo.

EDIT: The video is super inconclusive. It looks like El Hijo del Perro Aguayo is already unconscious & really hurt before the 619, which it looked like Rey missed (on purpose).

My understanding is it happened with the dropkick that set up the 619, which occurs before most of the videos start. I haven't watched the video and am trying my hardest not to, so I may have this wrong.

Sounded like a freak accident on a spot that had been done a bunch of times before...the rope whiplashed into his trachea or something.

Scroll down to the retro recap of WWF Superstars from 2/2/97 and you'll find Perro's lone WWF TV appearance. He was VERY young at the time(late teens?).

It's amazing the things these guys do on a daily basis that puts their health at such risk, and yet something so simple can end up so tragic. We take so much for granted.

Sad sad news.

If I'm understanding right, he died from spinal shock. Nothing Rey (or Manik) did would've caused that. That hasn't stopped many news sites from trying to use Rey to get clicks.

To sum up with Perro meant to AAA, right here and now

* lead face Myzteziz came back to resume his feud with Perro Aguayo Jr., which was going to culminate in a big match on their biggest show of the year.

* lead face Alberto del Patron came back to start a feud with Perro Aguayo Jr., which was going to culminate in a big match on their biggest show of the year.

* lead face Rey Misterio Jr. came back to resume his feud with Perro Aguayo Jr., which was going to culminate in a big match on their biggest show of the year.

No one could actually figure out how they were going to pull all of those off at once, but he was so untouchable that he could've lost one and come back a year later for another.

This is an immensely tragic week for AAA. Their spring PPV, Rey de Reyes, was postponed twice due to issues. They tried to send the wrestlers and staff home after the second postponement, only for the staff bus to collide into the back a flat bed truck (parked on the highway). 30 people were injured, one AAA staff member died.

Perro and Rey went from that to Tijuana to promote this show, then wrestled last night. Rey de Reyes was supposed to be Rey's glorious return to AAA, but everything went wrong. Last night was supposed to be Rey's glorious return to Tijuana. Everyone went wrong.

Rey de Reyes went on, because it had to go on. They're taping Lucha Underground tonight, and it'll probably go on because it has to go on. But I can't imagine what it's like to have to keep going on. Just following it, I want to get as far away from it as possible.

17. I think Jeff Hardy might have appeared on WWE TV at a young age, but there can't be many.

He'd been wrestling on AAA TV for two years at that point.

Do they have to continue all the spots RIGHT beside him?

Terrible news though, way to young to go.

Seeing the video, it's nothing grotesque or brutal about it, it's a move you've seen Rey's opponent's sell a billion times before. Such a freak accident.

The EMT's reaction is horrendous...

Shake a guy that's got a trauma. Good idea pal!

Looks like he was out from the dropkick, subsequent injury's possible from the fall onto the ropes.

That's not an EMT. It's Konnan.

I don't want to get into what people should or shouldn't have done, but do realize that sometimes life comes at you fast. Sometimes things that seem bad turn out to be okay (Foley, Hell in a Cell) and sometimes things that seem ordinary turn out terrible. It can be a real fine line.

I looked at all those angles again and again. I think it was the Hurricanrana. He was hurt bad, got up on instinct and got back in but couldn't even really stand up before he got the drop kick. And Rey never expected him to be in the ropes for a 619 obviously.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Yeah, there's no way to fairly blame Konnan (or anyone else) for this. That being said, looking at this with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight my skin absolutely crawls watching Konnan tug and pull at him by the neck and head, doing his very best to get his friend to wake up. Sad stuff.

Sorry your right, of course it's Konnan, it was late and I was shocked.

Not apportioning any blame to Konnan for the incident, but most people know not to shake a guy who's suffered head/neck injuries.

I haven't been closely following what others are saying, but this is the most logical and rational statement that I've seen made about the incident. It was a freak accident and a terrible tragedy. That's all that needs to be said other than I feel bad for the people involved who have to keep this with them for the rest of their lives.

I dont think there was any way to know that Aguayo had suffered a head/neck injury at the time. He took a run-of-the-mill bump after a run-of-the-mill dropkick then suddenly stopped moving. If I was Konnan I might have reacted the same way.

Someone on Facebook speculated that Perro's initial injury happened during the hurracanrana that sent him out of the ring BEFORE the dropkick and 619. After the 'rana, he falls out of the ring in a way that doesn't seem intentional to me, and Rey's reaction to him falling out of the ring seems to back that up. Then he immediately climbs back into the ring and takes the dropkick into the ropes, setting up the 619. Maybe the 'rana was only supposed to send him into the ropes for the 619, and not completely out of the ring where he possibly landed awkwardly out on the floor?

From the looks of his tag partner, he was not supposed to be on the ropes for the 619. Dude keeps tapping him on the shoulder like "This is my spot, move!"

Yea, that's the way Rey normally does the 619 set up, flipping the guy onto the ropes. Perro did intentionally tend to do some awkward looking rolls as part of take those moves, for comedic purposes. It didn't look right but it may have intended not to look right.

About 2-3 months ago, something similar happened on on a live lucha show I was watching. Marco Corleone - Mark Jindrak from WCW - was running ropes, but the top rope happened to snap back and smack him right in the back of the neck. He took about one step before his entire body gave out on him, like gravity just increased 20 times in a second. It looked horrible and they took him out on a stretcher, but he was fine a few minutes later and actually wrestled the next day.

After having seen that, it's tough to believe that huracanrana bump could be so leathal if it still allowed Perro the muscle control to quickly get back in the ring or do much of anything It's still possible, this is a freak incident, and maybe it just weakened him for the next blow, but I'm just not sure about anything.

Tiger and Rey both do 619, so they were going to tease it early in the match with both rudos ducking out of it and laying out the tecnicos to take control of the match. (Rey's never hits even when Perro doesn't move.)

Manik was taping Perro because he knew something was wrong with the way he was laying there

Talking to some old timers and remembering a few things, the ropes are now so tight that that kind of an injury can happen.

Used to be you could tie someone in the ropes easily without an injury occurring. Now, just try to bring two ring ropes close enough to do that...very tough.

The extra spring the pseudo-lucha indy-level flippy boys need comes with a price.
