I have a feeling (or is it a hope) that its been decided that John Cena will not be tying Ric Flair for world championship reigns.

Srsly? You think Vincent Kennedy McMahon would refrain from doing something that would surpass the legacy of one of WCW's leading lights?? A star he did not create? When he can have a home-grown superstar be "the greatest heavyweight champion of all time" by virtue of titles held?
He's tying AND passing Flair. There's not any doubt in my mind.

John Cena, the man to beat Reigns? John Cena is weak. He will fail like your stupid America. When he submits to the Make It Reigns (the Viscagra) and raises Roman's hand, and admits that the Big Dog was the better man, we'll all just have to rally behind our last best hope: Triple H.
As I pointed out awhile back, Cena would have to hold the title for five years in order to pass Ric Flair for length of reign, which is a far more impressive stat. You can't win the title 16 times without losing it 15, but you can't hold the title for a combined span of several years without defeating several challengers. They could still call Ric Flair the longest reigning champion in history.
There's also the matter of Flair actually having won the world championship in the NWA, WCW, and WWE a total of 21 times, so they could also tack on a few more reigns if they want Cena to win the title without surpassing Flair.
For that matter, all of John Cena's title reigns combined don't add up to even bob Backlund's reigns, let alone Hulk Hogan or Bruno Sammartino.
But in the long run, it doesn't even matter. Bruno Sammartino is the longest reigning champion in the history of the company but very few current fans even know who he is. A few decades from now, Ric Flair will only be a name thrown around as a legend who has no relevance to the current audience. A decade or two after that, John Cena will be in the exact same position.
