Just curious if anyone else caught this on the Network. I knew the general details about how this rivalry came to be, but I was ignorant on how Matt Hardy found out about the affair. Gotta say, this show left me feeling a lot more animosity towards Lita and Edge about how it all went down.
Granted, Matt dealt with it in a less-than-ideal manner, but I can't fault him for it. I just thought this was a shoot angle that wasn't given as much attention as I thought it deserved when it happened.
Anyone else watch this? What do y'all think about how it went down and what are your lasting impressions about everyone involved?
Matt Hardy was supposed to be huge after this. He had a groundswell of support that Daniel Bryan would have envied. There was no way this could go wrong.
Then Matt cut a promo where he said he didn't want a match with Edge and he wanted him to die in a car crash. On his triumphant return to WWE. The writing was kind of on the wall after that.

Then they had a brawl of a non-match at Summerslam that I witnessed in person.
I do remember trying to explain that feud to my friend before the show and how blurred the lines of it all had become.
That bizarre SummerSlam match killed Matt. He did get some revenge at the next PPV, but he was DOA after SummerSlam. The pop he got for coming back was huge. I felt bad for Matt, but if Lita felt the relationship was going nowhere and Matt's troubled relationship with other woman, I think its good for both parties it was over. Edge is still a dick for fucking his friend's girlfriend.
It also launched Edge. Matt became his accidental booster rocket when he couldn't hang in the ring or the mic. Edge excelled at both and then dominated SmackDown for years.

The thing that killed the Hardy momentum was the moment he signed a wwe contract and arrived to the arena in Vince's limousine. He was getting Stone Cold level pops. You would never see SCSA do that. Matt went from outsider rebel to just another worker after that moment. It would be like the three guys Cena got hired back all showing up to raw in HHH's limousine.

From the video, Matt says he had trouble sleeping one night and noticed Lita's phone lighting up, so he saw there was a new voicemail from Edge. He listened to it and Edge was saying how he couldn't stand pretending he wasn't in love with her, blah, blah, blah.

My head would've exploded at that moment.
LOL. Which pretty much means that he was either suspicious of something or is just mistrusting in general, and he checked her phone while she was in the shower. "I couldn't sleep and saw it light up and just happened to see it was from Edge so I listened to it" is a big pile of flaming BS, IMHO. She was cheating and he caught them, but I don't buy that it was pure happenstance that he checked her voicemail.

For me, it wasn't so much the promo so much as the finish of the SummerSlam match. The ref stopped the match and awarded it to Edge, when Edge wouldn't stop beating on Matt and Matt couldn't defend himself. Not even with use of a chair or a ladder - just regular fisticuffs. For the next two weeks, my friends and I awaited some word from Meltzer or Keller (Hell, anyone!) that Matt had gotten badly injured and the finish was an audible in the ring. As it turns out, nope, that was the finish. Killed Matt's momentum right out of the starting gate.
A few weeks later on free TV, another Matt-Edge match went to a no contest after a double KO from brawling in the arena outside of the ringside area. It drove me nuts, wondering, "Why the hell didn't you book *that* for the SummerSlam finish??" Instead, Edge (to his credit) was able to take advantage of things, getting his first WWE Title reign not long after.
Why yes, I am both a musician and a lawyer. Thanks for asking. :)

Not that it really matters, of course.
The story I remember from early on was that Edge's gal (his new wife, I had read) called Matt after she found out about the affair.

And that's so back-asswards, too. In this storyline it should have been the enraged party -- Matt Hardy -- who couldn't control himself and left his opponent defenseless and bloody in a heap.
Eh. I'm "whatever" towards to whole McMahon clan. Main events haven't been consistently entertaining in a long time. I don't care if they stick sports entertainment (or interviews or skits) in its slot.
