After last week's loaded show, we sure could use a breather. Too bad. It's all business this week, too. GM Regal welcomes us with the announcement of the next Takeover event on Feb. 11. We're also getting a #1 contender tournament, and Sasha Banks is getting one more shot at Charlotte tonight after beating her last week.

This tosses us to the open, and when we come back, it's Sami Zayn vs. Ty Dillinger. I wouldn't like Ty's odds on the best of nights, but this is not the best of nights. Sami's so serious, HE DOES NOT DANCE AT ALL on the way to the ring. He jumps Ty before the bell, and just beats the shit out of him. The ref tosses this thing out before it even starts.
Match Rating: No Contest
Sami gets on the mic and calls out Kevin Owens. He is pissed. He doesn't get Owens; he gets Regal instead. Regal tells him to dial it back, but Sami's not hearing it. He vows that he won't wrestle any other person before he gets his hands on Kevin Owens. Regal does something I really appreciate; he points out that Kevin Owens has not been in NXT long enough to earn a title shot, and he refuses to let him leapfrog the legitimate contenders. Sami says fine - make it non-title. Regal's got no quick answer for that, and relents. Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens, non-title, is our main event for NXT Takeover.

We also get a bonus announcement from Regal that we'll be doing a contract signing next week. That should go well, especially for Sami.

Next is our first match in the #1 contender tournament. I really like this because there are so many good picks for title matches in the company. Really, anyone could win this. Well...maybe not anyoneanyone, because our first contestant is Curtis Axle, and he'll be facing - wait, really? Finn Balor? Oof, this is going to be a bloodbath. This starts with some decent stuff; a nice back elbow from Axle, a dropkick, the big dive on the ramp, and then Axle goes on offense, and honestly I just kind of tune out here. Let's be serious, this is the most foregone of conclusions. Sure enough, a double stomp puts Curtis away, and Balor moves on toward glory.
Match Rating: Curtis Axzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Surprise! We get another Bull Dempsey promo. We're up to 0.914 Rhino. We can't go much further, here. Anyhoo, the upshot is that he's got another shot at Baron Corbin as part of the tournament next week. I will bet actual cash money that match goes to a non-finish.

Sasha gets her third title match against Charlotte now. I feel like these matches are complete teases unless they're going to give the two of them 20 minutes to show us what they can *really* do. Banks is out with Lynch, as is her custom, and Charlotte stands alone this week. Continuing the story from their previous matches, these two start hot, this time with an extended tie-up that makes it look like they're just trying to choke the life out of each other. They also do a cool spot where they trade some nasty looking Thesz presses on each other. The match breaks down pretty quickly, though, and Becky Lynch comes in to pull the DQ.
Match Rating: Too Short - Boooo!
The beating continues post match, until Bayley makes her return to run the heels off. But, it turns out that Bayley wants the belt just as much as anyone else, and it's a Belly-to-Bayley for Charlotte! Regal comes out, and decides that the only way to settle all of this is with a fatal four-way at Takeover. Becky Lynch is ecstatic; Sasha, less so. They take turns raising their own arms and lowering each other's, and it turns out that Sasha Banks has edged her way up into becoming one of my favorite things on this show.

We try to get some words from Kevin Owens in the locker room; try and fail. Kevin's saving his words for next week.

Time for tag-team wrestling. The Vaudvillains are taking on Blake and Murphy, who are wearing new tights that make it easier for me to tell them apart. Murphy starts hot with a corkscrew crossbody block, but the Vaudvillains take over pretty quickly. They hit neat backbreaker/suplex combo, and spread that into some more team offense. They come back and try that combo again, though, but this time Murphy wiggles loose and tags in Blake. Blake is the proverbial House O'Fire, and shock of shocks, he manages to score a roll-up on the Vaudvillains after a kick assist from Murphy. Blake and Murphy win!
Match Rating: Upset City - The Good Kind

We get a video promo from Tyler Breeze after this, where he promises to win the title and go on to separate the world into supergoodlooking people and uggo people. I'm not in love with my own chances, there.

We also get comments from Blake and Murphy. They are super psyched about their win - so psyched that they challenge the Lucha Dragons. We find out later in the night that the Dragons are game, and we'll be getting that title match next week.

Our main event is another tournament match, Hideo Itami vs. Tyler Breeze. Marcus Louis is spotted stalking Tyler during his entrance, and I am looking forward to this angle paying off. I have big expectations from this match. Itami's really been hitting his stride, and his offense is really coming together. He's finally getting the swing of working against the American style. Anyhoo, the match starts out with Tyler trying to stay as far away from Itami's deadly kicks as he can, and doing a pretty good job of it. The commentary team lets us in on the fact that Tyler's been referring to himself as the "Handsome Godzilla" in reference to facing Itami, and I love everything about that. The match turns into some very solid mat wrestling with Tyler in control. He hits a great neckbreaker, and I realize that I spend an inordinate amount of time talking about these guys' neckbreakers. What can I say, whoever's teaching neckbreakers down there is doing a damn fine job. Anyhoo, Itami gets himself back on offense by hitting some more kicks, and then moving into his tornado guillotine. This sets up fisherman's suplex for two, and I do love a fisherman's suplex, but all this does is get him into position for Breeze to hit the Supermodel Kick. Tyler Breeze has the best superkick in the business right now, and that's really saying something considering how many guys do superkicks anymore (they're the new piledrivers). He doesn't rest on his laurels, either. He rolls Itami up into what Corey Graves refers to as a "modified crufix slam," and I can't think of anything better to call it, so let's go with that. Tyler only gets two, though, and he starts to get mad. He starts peppering Itami with hard shots, but he evidently hasn't watched Wrestle Kingdom 9. Otherwise, he would have known that this is the sort of thing that would awaken Itami's Fighting Spirit. Once fully powered up, Itami starts a combo and just BEATS THE SHIT out of Breeze. Seriously, I was just wincing over and over again watching this. It's academic after that beating, and a hard kick to the side of the head wraps it up for Itami.
Match Rating: He Ain't Pretty No More.

I think this is now Itami's best match in NXT. For all that we had a lot of shuffling and getting ready for Takeover on this show, it was also another really fine hour of wrestling. NXT is usually good, but they have been on an unprecedented hot streak these last few weeks. Let's see if they can keep it up next week.

Both the qualifying matches were great, I agree about Itami, which is going to lead to International Friends Colliding! in the next round of the bracket. Bracketed tournaments are always great in wrestling.

My wife (who's watched a good bit of NXT with me) noted barely 10 minutes into the show that it's far and away the best WWE show they have. I think that was just based off Regal's announcements and setting the table for the show, maybe even before Sami's promo!

P.S. - it's Axel not Axle. :)

Shit, right, because it's Larry "The Axe" Hennig. On the other hand, I may be more correct in referring to him as Curtis Axzzzzzzzz.

Buddy Murphy has been one of my hidden favorites for awhile now. He's shown off some impressive innovative offense in past matches. I just looked him up on Wikipedia and found out he was trained by Lance Storm, which explains a lot. (He graduated in the same class as Emma, actually.)

Speaking of Lance Storm trainees, what the hell happened to Sylvester Lefort? Has he been in hiding ever since Marcus Louis turned on him? If so, can we at least get a cameo where he tries to warn Tyler Breeze that Marcus Louis is crazy and will try to kill him? Or maybe Lefort is chained up in Louis' basement.

Speaking of Lance Storm trainees, I actually expected Tyler Breeze to pull out the win just because I was surprised they would give away Hideo Itami vs Finn Balor this soon. I wonder if that won't somehow end in a clusterfuck (Ascension run in?) that results in neither of them advancing.

I can't imagine they're ready to pull the trigger on either Itami or Balor yet, nor do I see them doing another face vs face feud for the title so soon after the last. Adrian Neville is surely finished with Sami Zayn for now. Bull Dempsey vs Zayn would be an interesting change of pace, but I suspect Tyson Kidd goes over Neville, then whoever loses between Bull & Baron will cost the other one the match in the next round, leading to an eventual Tyson Kidd tournament victory.

So, the match between Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens at Takeover is non-title, right? If Kevin Owens beats Sami, and he probably will, shouldn't HE then be the number one contender? Will be interesting to see what happens then.

Am I the only one who thinks Bull Dempsey looks like Kevin Smith?

Ma'am, there is only one God, and I don't think He dresses like that.

That was the best one on one match I've seen from Breeze and Itami(in the WWE). Breeze has improved greatly with his time off cause I usually drift off during his singles matches, and Itami is starting to shake the new guy jitters and is adjusting his style. I could see these two working an extended program as they have similar builds and worked swimmingly together.

The total opposite can be said for Curtis Axel who I think has either plateaued or gotten even more generic in every way. Oh well, the world needs jobbers too.

Cole: "Yeah, thanks to Kane. You should buy Kane a Rolex watch for what he did for you."
Rollins: "Oh don't be silly, Kane doesn't wear watches."

Poor Shaniqua.....I wonder how she feels, going from Tough Enough winner to the WWE making it very clear to a nationwide audience that she is "man-ish" looking.
