Rock was great with the off-beat shenanigans (© Lance Storm) - bringing back the ROCK CAM was AWESOME. I think the last time he did it was Backlash '99.

But the star here was Chris Jericho. By far, one of (if not THE BEST) promos in the WWF (IMO). Jericho was turning beet red and looked like he was about to start bawling out there. I wonder how much of it was a shoot (Overlooked champ. transition champ, fluke, joke, etc.) This promo made it seem (and vignettes throughout the show) did a great job of building the fact that Jericho doesn't have a prayer in hell of beating Rock. Intense stuff.

That promo makes me flip flop on my previous opinion of jericho not winning at the rumble... I know firmly believe he will retain the belt by some cheap heel tactic, dq, countout or something like that...

Not necessarily TKL. Remember last year before No Way Out? WWF filmed all those promos with Angles talking about him being the underdog, and how everyone wants to see Austin/Rock at Wrestlemania and that Rock would win. Its almost like a swerve of a swerve. Show that Angle probably won't win, and he does. However, the Rock ended up winning the title match anyway. Oh well at that point, Angle had held the title longer than anyone else in the WWF in 3 years. Jericho ain't winning plain and simple.

I wonder when Jericho went out to cut the promo, they told him they offically signed Hall, Nash and Hogan. I cried too if I were him. Jericho/Rock really have been delievering in both promos and ring work since No Mercy, they both did a hell of a job with this being the only promo of the week to hype their match. This was probably the strongest Smackdown in a long time, too.

A Fan- The WWF does a great job of making you think sometimes when they want to.

Wait a tic... Wasn't HHH's 9 month reign within the last three years? Angle didn't have the title that long, did he?

From 1999-2000, HHH held the title on 4 occassions. None of those reigns lasted 9 months. His first title reign was about 3 weeks. His second 7, third 17, and fourth 5. So from September of 1999 to April of 2000 HHH held the title a better part of the that time, but never nine months. I don't know how the hell you came up with that.

Well, there you go. Don't come down on me too hard now, I did include the caveat that my numbers were off. Anyhow, thanks for the hard facts. My memory is decaying... I blame the internet.

[EDIT] Permit me to retract a bit of that shame and humilty. Adding up the total weeks of HHH's title reigns, I get 8 months. Yeah, so it isn't nine. And it isn't consecutive. But it sure felt that way.

Rock's first half of the interview was a little rambling, but it kind of had to be to set up Jericho's arrival. It's also in character for the Rock, who has a history of not taking the Rumble seriously. He is the guy who once listed his top Rumble competition as Headbanger Mosh and, after losing the Rumble to Big Show, provided iron-clad video evidence that he won, which ended up being tape of himself making fun of Show.

Anyway, once Rock started winding down and Jericho came out, it really took off. Great stuff from Jericho, no doubt. I got the feeling towards the end when Jericho was just standing there no longer looking at Rock, that instead of debuting Nash in the Rumble itself, they might have him show up at Jericho's request to help him put away The Rock. Jericho's in that desperate I'll-do-anything-to-keep-my-belts zone now and with Vince sidetracked with Flair, he's got to make deals with whomever he can.

Whatever they do, this is the perfect character for him.

It was a Solid Promo, and you had to laugh when the Rock Announced that "EVERYBODY IS GOING TO WIN THE ROYAL RUMBLE!". To Quote another rich Crazy Texan HE-LAIR-E-US.

But this all leads to the undeniable fact that Rock is seen as a lock. Everyone thinks he's got it in the bag (Although Undertaker said he wasn't so sure. Keeping his heelnes, or foreshadowing his intervention?) Jericho didn't even look too confident, so what will happen, and what are the ramifications?

1) Rock wins the Belts.
Jericho is crushed and will have to work double hard for a hella long time to get back to a credible top level, or heel role.

2) Jericho Retains the belt through nefarious means.
The Canadian Horsemen, Undertaker, Hall, Nash, Hogan, Jericho's Wife and In-laws, ANYBODY helps the man win, he builds up a little more heel heat as a non-credible champ.
Personally if they go this way, I'd LOVE to see Storm or Test or someone attack JERICHO! Ref sees it, DQs Rock, Jericho can gloat how Rock was saved by whoever, but Y2J Has yet another win over the People's Champ.

3) Jericho over ROck Clean (Yeah RIGHT!)
This could make whoever wins the Rumble (Triple H) look like he has a hell of a challenge for WM. Plus Jericho's Gloating on Monday could reach new heights, which will crank the fans hatred of him up like 5 levels.

The WWF Has made it obvious who SHOULD win, but they like to swerve us, but then, as someone pointed out, they KNOW we know this, so it could be a swerve of a swerve, or perhaps it is aa swerve, of a swerve, of a swerve, or possibly.......

I was reminded of something Mick Foley said in his book, about having to take some element of reality and truth into being a heel, to convince yourself that you are right. Jericho certainly seemed to be doing just that last night, which is why that promo worked so well.

The difference between this year and last year was that Rock/Austin last year was an inevitability since Austin returned in Sep. 2000.

Not so this year. The inevitability this year was face HHH v. heel Austin - but that fell through with HHH's injury and the sheep's refusal to accept Austin as a heel.

Jericho's retaining. There's no reason for Rock to win anyway - the buildup as been around Jericho losing - not Rock winning. Also, Rock may have to miss some shows due to his movie. Why would you put the World title on the Rock now?

Oh come on. He wasn't THAT blase about it. He threw Crash Holly in there also.
