So for the second time in about five years, the wife thinks that when I joke during a Playstation commercial that I want one, she should get me one. I got a PS4 with Destiny, which would be exciting if I liked FPS's and didn't bomb playing the Destiny demo on PS3. I'm excited to possibly download Secret Ponchos for free, but I spend most of my gaming time playing WoW, as I haven't touched the PS3 for game-related purposes in a while (beyond the very rare outing in Bejeweled. I have Brothers downloaded for my PSN account that I haven't touched, and I keep meaning to get back to X-Com but haven't because FUCKING GARRISONS.)

So the question I pose to the community is that given that, in the console wars, I consider myself a Sony Fanboy, but for right now, I'm kinda past console games, I'm thinking I should trade the PS4 for an Xbox One. I've seen the "power" of the Kinect, as a few of our friends have it, and the voice commands might be worth it for our living room. It pains me to say this, but I look at the console more as a media device than a game playing device...

Really, I need you guys to talk me out of this logic and convince my balls to grow back because Playstations are awesome and Secret Ponchos will rule.

Thanks!!!

There's no way you make a 'joke' twice and get a PS, I have more faith in your wife than that. Deep down you wanted this, so unbox it and enjoy it the whole thing probably feels awkward to her. If you do return it get a pack of socks and use the rest to get her something nice, lord knows she probably deserves it. So, grow a set and enjoy the gift :)

We were a PS1/2/3 family, but this time we went with the XBox One. I got really fed up with Sony and their continued removal of features like the Other OS, Folding@Home, etc - and I never really forgot about their massive security breach a few years ago.

So the Kinect is very cool, but I'm not sure it's worth the extra money. And while it generally works pretty well (it's nice being able to turn off/on, change channels, etc by speaking to my TV), there are periods where the Kinect can be infuriatingly deaf and it's just easier to grab a controller. You can't just talk to it like you can talk to Siri - you need to talk to it in a specific way using specific phrases, which, again, can be a little frustrating.

Yeah, some of the Kinect games are fun, but the sports games really require some sizable living room space to fully enjoy. And the rumor I keep hearing is that Microsoft is going to be focusing less on the Kinect and more on gaming in order to keep competitive with Sony... but who knows.

The only real advantage that the XBox One has is the ability to connect an external drive, which I don't believe the PS4 support.

Beyond that and aside from the obvious increase in game quality, I'm not seeing a massive difference between my PS3 and my XBox One. Most of the same apps are there (MLB.TV, HULU Plus, Netflix, UPnP Media Player, etc). Unless you're really enthralled with the Kinect (to the point you're willing the shell out the extra cash), I'd say keep the PS4 and enjoy that.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe HBO Go is still not available on the PS4 for Comcast customers, right? And the WatchESPN app will likely never be on the PS4. So if those are important to you, Xbox One might be your thing.

I'm still rolling with my 360 after my PS3 died on me for the second time. I would love to upgrade to a PS4 but the ESPN app is mandatory for me.

HBO Go on PS4 is still "coming sometime in 2014." They've got 2 more days!

Thanks for the input!!!

We also have a Chromecast and a currently active HBO subscription, so we should be fine without HBO Go on the PS4. That said, it may be something to consider in the future. (I keep pushing to cut the cord.)

I forgot about the Kinect costing extra, so thanks Leroy for pointing that out. We have some friends who use their Kinect's pretty extensively, and I've seen how it can sometimes be a bit spotty. At this point, I'm fine with whatever I can download (assuming the PSN is working when I finally get around to unpacking the console) for it.

I'm not a huge fan of FPS games either, but the selection of games that either go on sale monthly (the big list that TheCubsFan posts) or the "free" games with the Playstation Plus membership are more than worth the system for me. Pix the Cat is ridiculously addictive and fun, as are SteamWorld Dig and Rogue Legacy. It's $50/year, but you get 2 games each month for each system you have (PS3, PS4, Vita) and many of them are more adventure-puzzlish than any of the regular games for the system. I don't see buying another regular game for myself until Kingdom Hearts III comes out, the PS+ games are that much fun!

My post was a little more negative than I had intended. I really like the XBox One/Kinect - I'm glad we got it - but at the risk of sounding redundant and putting aside my personal frustrations with Sony, I would've been equally happy with a PS4 - so I think you've made a wise choice in not rushing out to exchange it.

Although, that the PSN is still having issues (independent.co.uk) allows me to put back on my DAMMIT SONY hat, I'd probably wait to unpack it just in case there's more to this latest hacking/DDoS attack than they're letting on...

I set up a friend's PS4 last night and got it connected with no problems (at least those which weren't Comcast's fault.) I can't promise it'll go okay, but it's probably go okay.
