I'm not going to disagree with that general sentiment, but I think you actually needed them for the main event. I don't know if that match works as well without a bunch of people willing to chant and yell the whole match long, and wave their hands "no" when Sami had the belt in his hands. A big part of the storytelling was that Sami needed to feed off the crowd to be able to win.

I didn't word that properly. I meant, "what an amazing crowd, organically into everything this show had to offer, and thereby making the viewing experience doubly pleasant!" I can only imagine how it must be to actually be there. As a result, visiting Winter Park to catch an episode of NXT has climbed to the top-5 of my achievable bucket list goals.

I'm sorry, I get what you're saying now. I find that the NXT crowd can be intrusive sometimes, but last night they didn't force their way into the show, they were given an important role in the main event, and they delivered every bit as much as the two guys in the ring. And definitely, I'd rather have the NXT crowd than a bunch of guys who sit on their hands all night. I too would love to one day catch NXT live.

This is our Sad But Probably Accurate fact of the night. But you know what? Even if it doesn't change the game, the fact that I occasionally get to see really great women's wrestling is enough for me.

And all of this effort was in the background while the audio was of the interview.

I loved this segment. It was my favorite non-wrestling bit of the evening, because it wasn't just the three guys you mentioned, but you could see everybody in the locker room shooting glances at Zayn, and it was written on everybody's faces that they didn't think he could win. There was such great emotion and storytelling in that bit, and there wasn't any dialogue at all.

This was the opposite of what the WWE normally offers. They gave us what we wanted.

Owens debuted, killed, bled, returned, killed again, and seemingly became the top title contender within 2 hours of his debut. The history of Zayn and Owens was acknowledged, and while it wasn't completely necessary for the booking, it added depth.

Balor came out like Jeff Hardy and Boogeyman and moved like Cody Rhodes, and that's a fantastic combination for a professional wrestler. The luchadores were in the zone. Corben got a squash and an angle. Charlotte and Banks went all out, and Neville went down after a half-hour title defense.

The production is AMAZING. Some of these entrances are Mania-quality, and this show is worth the cost of a non-Network PPV.

This is a big weekend. Two free UFC shows, and two WWE PPV events, one of which just set an impossible standard. And that's after a hellacious Lucha Underground episode.

I've needed to be reminded why I'm a wrestling fan lately. Thankfully there's been plenty to do that: A lot of good stuff at Survivor Series, some cool indy shows last weekend(one of which had a 60-minute draw in the main event), Lucha Underground, and now this NXT special.

It's almost disheartening to think that I don't WANT these guys and gals to be called up to the main roster. Charlotte's main-roster debut on Monday doesn't help that perception.

I ask this as someone who hasn't seen a moment of NXT other than when they're given a short stint on Raw, but that doesn't really apply here (just providing context).

How can you (the generic you) logically differentiate between the HHHate when it comes to Raw/Smackdown and the gushing love of NXT? If I'm not mistaken, NXT is HHH's baby and he's solely in charge, no? Wouldn't the success of NXT tend to imply that he knows what he's doing and maybe -- just maybe -- he's not as much to blame for the WWE clusterfuck as many seem to imply?

Or is instead that he's not nearly as hands-on in NXT as my basic understanding believes?

Personally, while HHH doesn't run the booking down in NXT, he does have a lot to do with the talent, and I give him more credit for what's right down there than I do blame for what wrong up north (although the two are not 100% mutually exclusive). He put out a great tweet last night about how he's "missing a box full of brass rings" after last night, and I think that says a lot about him and how he views the product.

I remember Owens/Steen taking off as an ROH superstar under GM/Commissioner Jim Cornette. Steen was "taken off" TV and sidelined, planted fans held signs and interrupted the commentators to call for Steen's return, and he targeted a reluctant Cornette amid a suspension of his death move, the package piledriver.

Is the current Steen/Owens considered a continuation of Cornette booking?

Balor's entrance wasn't just huge, it was epic, it was Takeresque. I honestly can't think of a better word to describe it. A standout moment from the standout show of the year.

The first time I've seen Steen/Owens in action, and it didn't disappoint, and lived up to the hype. Opened the show with an impact, and closed the show with an even bigger impact.

TLC, you're up. You have a lot to live up to if you're going to try and make fans forget about what they witnessed Thursday.

Think of it like this: imagine if, instead of "I gotta have this incredible entrance", "I gotta have this meaningful build-up over several weeks if not months", "I gotta have the time to cut this money promo", "I gotta have a really long match to make this seem huge", "I gotta go over now to pay off this angle", "I gotta be the one with a sense of importance reinforced by the production and announcers and every other performer on TV", you took all those impulses and ideas and generously spread them out to 10-20 of the most talented men and women in the industry? The guy has always had all the right instincts about how to build and make a star in the paradigm of a wrestling show, and it turns out not constantly making himself that star is actually, you know, best for business.

I missed Kidd. Nonetheless, this show was perfect from the first minute to the (very) last. I wouldn't change one thing about it. If you haven't watched it already, do so NOW! You won't regret it. A show for the ages.

Regal's reaction was amazing. It takes on even more weight because Regal scouted a PWG show a year or so ago and was supposedly instrumental in getting Steen signed. He sold the betrayal SO DAMN WELL.

I loved this show so much. I've been following Owens' and Zayn's careers fairly closely since I first saw them wrestle each other in PWG in 2005. I was in attendance for both of their PWG farewells. This show got me right in the wrestling fan feels.

And yes, Balor's entrance was incredible. Will he only use that on the big shows?

Please go away, Alex Riley.

WWE has created a monster. Their "developmental" league is now their best product. Where do they go from here?

EDIT: Oooh! Even more Regal goodness! He is God. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwcLDFntJ4I

You know, I wouldn't be too surprised. There was no replay of it during the highlights.

Nah. That move was in his second vignette.

Loved the show. TLC feels like a mere afterthought now, I'm actually more inclined to watch this again than the show on Sunday.

After listening to the Zayn/Neville podcast on Talk is Jericho I was interested to see if they could deliver the MOTY contender that it seemed they felt they could. They sure did deliver. Amazing match, probably suffered some slight overbooking at the end, but that is most definitely being picky.

This show also debuted my new favourite crowd chant for Finn Balor's entrance. "MARKING OUT! MARKING OUT!" Yeah, I was too. That guy is money.

Edit: Roman Reigns made an appearance and his interview annoyed me. He wants to be the "first NXT alumi to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship", Sorry buddy, Daniel Bryan beat you to it.

Y'know, I don't get it. It's clear from NXT that WWE CAN book good women's wrestling. They can tell from the crowd reaction that they love it when the women put on big, intense matches. So why does Vince insist on treating the main-roster Divas as eye candy? Why do almost all Divas matches suck ass and last less than 2 minutes? It must be the difference in booking philosophies, but it's astounding how hard Vince will work to ignore what's staring him in the face so he can line himself up for another shot in the foot.

I personally found myself rooting for Sasha in that match (and I'm glad I wasn't alone), but stellar match from both of them. I'm not sure it beats Paige/Emma, as some have claimed, but still the best Diva's match I've seen this year. I'd argue that there's been better Knockout matches, but that's here nor there.

Anyhow, this PPV was pretty amazing. Some of the matches were a bit short, but it was pretty great to see a roster full of fresh faces putting it all on the line to entertain us. I was really impressed with my first time watching the Ascension, and Balor's entrance was, well, appropriate for someone whose last name means 'D&D Balrog knock-off' (for those who don't get the reference, D&D doesn't have the rights to the term 'Balrog' for a super-strong demon armed with flaming whip and fiery sword, so they call it a 'Balor' instead).

Kevin Owens' first match was a pretty brutal squash, though one of the few squashes I've seen where the squasher gets his nose broken by the squashee. I'm impressed how athletic he is for a bigger guy, and can't wait for him to get called up to the main roster. Though they'll probably have him job to the Bunny on his first match or something.

I don't get the hate that Riley gets from some of you; all 3 guys seem fine to me, but maybe it's just a relief not to have 3 guys who are all repeating what Vince tells them to say. At least none of them are as annoying as JBL, who causes me to mute my TV for about half of any given WWE show. I hate his 'ignorant Texan bully' gimmick.

The main event was really awesome. I've never seen anything like that dive between the ropes into a DDT, FROM THE FLOOR. I thought the internal struggle with Zayn about whether or not to paste Neville with the title to be a little cheesy, but maybe it had more meaning if you've been watching this guy for a long time. He wound up winning anyway, so kudos for virtue I suppose.

There's a great story from Chris Hero about Paul Heyman being rendered speechless the first time Sami utilized that move in NXT.

Edit: Randomly browsing YouTube videos, I just learned that this move (and Zayn & Neville) are in WWE 2K15. They call it the Torpedo DDT.

I got a question about the NXT crowd. Are they "Smarky" like the Impact Zone and some WWe crowds? Will they chant Steen Steen at Kevin Ownes? Like how they chanted Husky Harris at Bray Wyatt?

There were multiple instances of them using OWENS in place of STEEN in his standard chants, including FIGHT OWENS FIGHT and OWENS' GONNA KILL YOU. No mention of the name Steen at any point.

They police themselves, believe it or not. At one point in the tag match, someone tried to start a "We want KENTA" chant, and he was very promptly drowned out by boos, followed by a "Hideo" chant.

They seem to be pretty good about the names.

It's when they start to get clever about themselves that it becomes an issue. Plus since they tape like 3 weeks worth of shows in one night something that's just a "one night thing" for the crowd there can drag and drag for us watching weekly.
