We finally see what happened to Beth after she disappeared last season. The cross on the back of the car that sped off with her wasn’t a church cross; it was an ambulance cross. She ended up back in a hospital in Atlanta where she was tended to and cared for. She awoke to find herself in the middle of a partial Go On reunion community of survivors that live under a pretty straightforward economic system – whatever you take, you have to pay back. So just by virtue of being rescued and cared for, Beth had to pay that debt back in the form of work around the hospital. You can’t leave unless your debt is paid. Thing is, under such a system, your debt could never be fully paid, so you basically can’t leave. This community is a group of people with the necessary skills (a doctor, some cops) to help rebuild the world after what they believe to their eventual rescue from the walker apocalypse.

Drama ensues. Beth makes friends with and helps out the lone doctor. The doctor dupes Beth into killing an injured man by asking her to administer medicine that will actually kill the man. Turns out the doctor was scared for his position in the community because the injured man was also a doctor, and I guess this community doesn’t need two doctors.

After Beth realizes the trickery, it looks like she is planning to kill the doctor herself, when all of a sudden, an unconscious Carol (!) is wheeled into the hospital.

Yeah, sorry, this isn’t doing it for me. Based only on what we saw in this episode, I would have rather sat through a half-season of the cannibals. Granted, this could pick up, but after dealing with psychopaths like the Governor and Gareth, this appears to be really tame and boring.

I thought the episode was fine, but I couldn't figure out how Dawn was able to keep the little society going when EVERYONE (except maybe sleazeball cop) hates her and thinks this is a terrible idea. Well, there was that small army of cops at the end that only showed up to subdue Beth, but still...

Can't wait to find out what happens with Carol! Oh, wait, we have to take a break for stupid Abraham and stupid Eugene. Breaking up the group is already killing the narrative flow.

Everything is awesome.

This whole episode felt like a weird take on the Stamford Prison experiment.

I didn't care for this episode at all. I like Beth - she's really underrated - and I did like her trapping of the sleazy cop - but this little hospital society really makes no sense (hey guess what, *another* f'd up group with yet *another* morally f'd up authority figure).

Which is kind of what I also was afraid of happening, but alas...

Yeah - I didn't get this at all - unless there's some fear that having more than one intelligent person on board would be a threat to the cops authority.

And unless I missed it, I couldn't get any sense of how big this place was or how many people they were housing. It seems like this was a pretty small group of people to have such a police state in place.

The doctor had said that he gets to pretty much do what he wants because he's the only doctor they have. Dawn has no choice but to allow him to live somewhat outside of her system of slavery and rape.

If there's two doctors, Dawn can start beating the shit out of both of them when she feels like it until one dies, then the other one becomes valuable and gets to live free.

As far as how Dawn keeps things under control. Her subordinates from before the Walkers rose have all the guns and all the muscle. They're all alive and get to be alive because of what she's got going on in there. It's not too bad for the cops that are working under her. They're not the ones getting raped and beaten. They get the kind of safety that the prison was affording Rick's group a while back. If they don't want to be a part of what Dawn has setup, they can always try their luck in the center of Atlanta and see how long they last.

I liked the episode, but I always like seeing how other groups of people have survived.

I also am a fan of splitting the groups. I find getting everybody week after week hurts the characters as none of them are compelling enough for me and they start to annoy me. I was a big fan of last season's random roaming as compared to having everyone sit in one spot and bicker.

This episode is a little flimsy, but they all are. Seeing the world from Beth's eyes is always interesting too, so I can't complain.

I agree with most of the sentiments here. Beth is pretty underrated. I liked that she was smart enough to realize the doctor duped her and I think that her desire to help Noah but her near attempt to kill the doctor at the end is showing that she has a good balance of Herschel and Daryl in her. I also loved the smile when Noah escaped. Maybe she was just happy to see him escape but I also interpreted it as now she can do whatever she wants because she doesn't have Noah's safety to worry about. It was a good showcase for Beth but I wasn't interested in anything else going on at the hospital.

I don't have a problem with splitting the groups if there is something for each of them to do. Next week's episode looks kind of eh. Hopefully Maggie and Glenn will make the others interesting but it does suck to have episodes where you don't see characters when the season is so short. And are we going to wait ANOTHER week to find out who is with Daryl? I assume he either runs into Noah after he escapes or he runs into Morgan?

I actually really liked the episode.
It worked as a total stand alone story (hell, it could've been made into a longer low budget horror type movie)

I figured not everyone is raping there. But obviously she does use fear to keep people in tow.
Seeing how other groups survive is interesting.
And yes, once again we see a dictator type but I do believe that society would fall to that pretty rapidly anyways.
The idea that humans are kind creatures who will share power will be forgotten the moment we have to.

The doctor was obviously a coward, afraid of losing his rights and afraid to chance it out there.
Not everyone is a grizzled survivor like Beth.

And in his own way Noah isn't the nicest of guys either.
He limps past the walkers but lets Beth fight them?
Errhmm..thanks for nothing buddy!

I saw someone comment on facebook saying they were annoyed by Beth's wounds and scars, but it definitely helped her look more mature and bad-ass instead of the pretty little girl.

This was a disjointed, odd episode. Maybe it was the editing. It felt like we skipped some necessary breathing room for characters to process information. Beth's awakening and introduction felt like a compressed dream sequence. Her decision and preparation to use the scissors on the doc before Carol came onscreen was awkwardly rushed. I'm tempted to say this is the series's weakest episode, and I hope it proves necessary for the season because, on its own, it gives us very little.

The Lovely Mrs. Tracker wondered if we've flashed back to before Carol and Tyresse reunited, but that would mean Carol knew where Beth was and didn't tell Daryl AND that Carol got out of the woods, into downtown Atlanta, and made it back to those woods to find her gang. Which seems unlikely.

I don't think Beth is what made this episode not work. She's not weak, certainly not as Dawn argues. She used a walker trap on Gorman, which is "vintage Rick, King!"

I'm really looking forward to some necessary and long overdue character development with Eugene's crew.

I agree with Tracker that the editing was super weird. I didn't like how Beth was thrown into the situation. Hey, you're a nurse now, you can figure all this out immediately, right? Also, I didn't even realize that was Carol until a coworker pointed it out to me.

I liked the episode too if only to remind me that beth is alive.

Life is hilariously cruel.

It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes.

I'm thinking Beth's buddy escaped, and ran into Carol and Daryl who were following that car heading back to the hospital. Buddy then tells Carol/Daryl about how Beth is being held there and how the whole place works.

I figure the plan is that Dawn is going to look at Carol and think she's just a weak middle-aged woman. Then let the surprises begin!
