Woof. People were unhappy with that Ambrose segment on RAW. Let's see if NXT can do a little better? This week I'm going to do like everybody else and add match ratings.

Well, the opener's not much help there. We've got the Ascension vs. Ty Dillinger and Jason Jordan. I actually really like Dillinger and Jordan, especially Jordan. They've got good charisma on the mic and some nice double team moves. This, however, is Squash City, USA, as the Ascension roll over them and get the win with the Fall of Man.
Match Rating: Eh.
Afterwords, Hideo Itami comes out to get absolutely murdered. The announcers point out that this was not, strictly speaking, very smart of him. I didn't like this segment because it didn't tell us anything new. Itami is one tough guy who can't beat two tough guys. No progression here.

Next up is a better segment: CJ Parker vs. Tyler Breeze. Parker is possibly the best talker in NXT, unfortunately he's not a great wrestler. Or, really, a good wrestler. I'd much rather see him transition into a managerial role (free booking idea - have him cut his hair and put on a suit, but run with exactly the same eco-warrior gimmick. CJ Parker, the White-Collar Hippie). This is probably the best match I've seen him have so far, which isn't surprising against Breeze, who is totally great. Anyhoo, the match has a couple nice spots, including a springboard dropkick by Breeze that sends Parker out to the floor. At this point, Mojo Fucking Rawley comes out on the ramp. Mojo, you said you were leaving. You are a LIAR, sir. Meanwhile, Breeze hits a really crisp hurricanrana, and then gets the win with the Beauty Shot.
Match Rating: A'ight.

On his way out, Breeze rubs salt in the wound by mocking Mojo's shoulder injury. I can't help but think that there are better things for Breeze to be doing.

Interview segment with Titus O'Neil (who my wife now insists on referring to as "The Real Seal"). Titus has a main even championship match against Adrian Neville tonight, but he doesn't say anything much here. This is followed by a pretaped Baron Corbin vignette, which is shot against a green screen and has him riding a motorcycle, and I don't..., I can't..., look, seriously just go look this thing up, it is amazing and I clearly don't have the words for it.

Next match is the Vaudvillains against Blake and Murphy. The return of Some Jobbers from last week! The commentary team mentions the Vaudvillains new music as being indicative of a new, dastardly change in direction for the team (Aside: I really, really like the rotating commentary team. It does so much to keep the commentary sounding fresh). As I said last week, the Vaudvillains are great, and this match is probably tonight's high point. They hit a manly double punch to start off, and continue with a lot of high-impact offense. Blake and Murphy counter with actual offense. Speed-based offense, in fact. They have a nice double leapfrog and a Rolling Thunder variant. That said, even though they're moving up in the world, this match goes to the Vaudvillains. They've got a new finisher (a reverse European uppercut into a neckbreaker) called the Gentlemen's Congress. There is literally nothing about this team that I don't love.
Match Rating: Shit Yes.

Bayley fights Sasha Banks again. If Kalisto isn't my favorite wrestler in NXT, then Bayley is. I love her elbow strikes and suplexes so much. Banks has new music, which again I don't like as much as what she was using, but it's not offensive or anything. Bayley starts off with some absolutely killer punches to Banks's head, but after that it's a pretty standard affair. We've seen these two fight several times already, and while it's still good, there's really nothing new. Anyhoo, Banks hits the Bank Statement and forces the tapout for the win.
Match Rating: Still Good, I Guess.
Afterwards, she continues wailing on Bayley until Becky Lynch comes out for the save. Now, if you've ever watched wrestling before, I mean seriously, ever, for any length of time, you can immediately tell this is a total swerve. Sure enough, Lynch hits a, sort of terrible clothesline-thing, to the back of Bayley's head, before heading up the ramp with Sasha. Hopefully, this is leading to a tag match between Lynch/Banks and Bayley/Charlotte, which ought to be absolutely killer.

Next, we have a segment with Amore, Cass, and Carmella. Amore hits the greatest line in the history of NXT. "You know I'm a G, right? Well, I'm also 4G - because I'm well-connected." I'm not too proud to admit that I laughed a long time at this incredibly stupid joke. The upshot is that Amore has netted Carmella another match against Emma next week. Good luck Emma!

Final match of the night is Titus O'Neil vs. Adrian Neville. I predicted that this match would not be very good, but it's actually a little better than I expected. Neville takes some nice bumps to sell it, including getting shoved off the ring ropes to the floor and then getting ragdolled halfway across the ring. Ultimately, though, no one is stupid enough to make Titus the NXT champion, and so Neville gets in position to hit the Red Arrow and pick up the pin.
Match Rating: Real Seal Titus O'Neil(Officially Better Than I Would Have Guessed)
Post-match, Sami Zayn comes out to officially challenge for the title. As we go off the air, Neville helpfully points out the incredibly true fact that Zayn has thus far been incapable of winning the big one.

That finishes it up for us. Good show, in between last week's and the week before that. Last week set an impossibly high bar to follow, but this was still good, solid wrestling.

I think the story here is that Itami beat them both once before, and thought he could do it again. He didn't, so now he may try another course of action. Logical progression, and I look forward to seeing the end game with this.

Love how the commentators were all going on about Titus being fast and then it cuts to him just sorta standing around in the ring and slowly walking lol.

CJ Parker is so bad. But I love his music for some reason.

Is this the promo in question? (Link to Vimeo because the only YouTube version I could find was created via using a camera to record the TV screen, losing the simultaneously fake and awesome "3D" feel of the rain.

That's the one.

And I forgot to mention CJ Parker's music. It is by far the best new music any of these guys have gotten. It's a fantastic, totally listenable track, which is rare in wrestling. So while I've been shitting on a lot of the new music these last few weeks, there have been some real improvements, too - Parker, Zayn, Breeze, Amore and Cass, Bull Dempsey (fun fact: Bull's music is almost exactly the same as Dean Ambrose's. Hear it once, and it's all you can hear when Ambrose comes out) are all guys who've really benefited from the change.

In unrelated news, I'm going to be out of town Halloween weekend, so if someone else wants to start the NXT thread next week, feel free. Otherwise, I'll put up a recap next Monday.

I'm not ashamed to admit I do get up and do a little ska jig every time Zayn comes out. The dogs love it. One thing I noticed during the Bayley match that was interesting was that there was a little girl dressed up with her side ponytail and headband screaming for Bayley during her match. It's amazing that WWE has never (until this point) really tried to capitalize on making a Diva to directly appeal to little girls. Something like a female Hogan. Could be some major money in it I imagine if they utilize her properly on the main roster does glittery Bayley headbands could make some bank (no pun intended).

I also can't help but skank every time Zayn's music plays. My dog is not a fan. I've noticed Sami can't help but dance too, even when he is coming out to do a serious promo. I will also admit to doing some bad early 90s Brit-pop arm waving when CJ Parker's music plays.
And if I am admitting to questionable early 90s habits, Baron Corbin is one art class away from being 14-year-old Toast's dream boy. After all(as Renee Young helpfully pointed out) he's a lone wolf. I can only assume no one understands him. No one but me.

CJ Parker is an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, packaged in a conundrum. He's supposed to be this hippie, so he has the dreads and the scruffy beard. But the rest of his body (that we can see) is completely shaved/waxed. That's the sign of a man who either isn't fully invested in the gimmick or who hopes for something better in the near future. Is it an inside joke that he's named after Pamela Anderson's Baywatch character?

I thought they were trying to give the Corbin promo a Sin City type of vibe. It looked corny but different.
Not unlike going to black & white imagery for the Vaudevillains.

I hope Enzo and Big Cas don't split up over Carmella.
And that 4g comment by Enzo was awesome btw.

Another good show. Hideo Itami needs to turn it up a notch, though. His first few weeks in NXT have not been impressing at all. Enzo and Big Cas on the other hand totally reek of awesomeness. Vaudevillans are great too, especially their entrance. The same goes for Adrian Neville. I also like Sami Zayn, but nonetheless, I liked him way more as El Generico. Overall, what a great and fun roster. And Finn Balor and Stevin Austeen haven't even debuted yet. The future looks bright.

It would be tough for them to sell a Cena career match when they couldn't go a couple of weeks when he was 'fired' for not following Nexus orders.
