Even if he's good for the Jets, they currently have a 99% chance of missing the playoffs. Why give up a draft pick - which the Jets obviously need - for an expensive WR who isn't going to help you this year and may not be enough to turn around things next?
(You do it because your'e a GM who believes he's going to be fired unless a massive turn around happens and so isn't worried at all about the future. Doesn't help Jets fans much.)
I was as surprised as anyone that this happened, but now that it has, I can't help but think of the Vikings trade as being the equivalent of the Pistons drafting Darko Miličić. It didn't hamper the first title, but it's sure going to make the next one harder.

I've tried several times and I still don't get the reference and how the two are remotely similar. I want to get it. This is also the same way I feel about the trade.
The Jets have 20 million in cap space before this trade and a fan base that is ready to riot. A GM who has invested a year and a half in his guy Geno Smith, a coach who clearly has no say in building the roster or even who he gets to start in some cases. So why not add angry Percy Harvin and his non guaranteed contract. At least they have a true number one receiver now and a true two in Decker. They gave up a draft pick, but haven't drafted well since Mangini left town. Nevermind the fact that trading for a receiver midseason rarely works right away anyways, and they actually need corners more than receivers.
It was ballsy by Seattle. They lost a lot of picks in the deal, but they removed a guy who disrupted their locker room chi and someone who they were probably going to have to renegotiate with or cut ties with to pay Russell Wilson anyways.

Pistons made a terrible move in drafting Darko with the second overall pick in a stacked draft. He contributed next to nothing in his first year, but the Pistons still won the title that year. The Pistons remained contenders for years afterwards, but never won a second title, in large part because they could have used a functional first round pick. It's quite possible that missing out on their first round pick will cost the Seahawks future titles (while not preventing them from continuing to be contenders).

New reporting says the conditional pick for Harvin is a 4th if he stays on the Jets next year, 6th if he gets cut.
So: - Harvin is getting cut after the season - 6th is a whole lot different than a 2nd! - this deal goes from a total negative for the Jets to being neutral (you're not going to get a lot of value of Harvin on a 1-5 team, but you're not getting a lot of a 6th rounder.) - Harvin lost a whole lot of value in the time the Seahawks had him - someone's getting Harvin for a bargain in 2015

The business of the NFL is selling tickets and jerseys. If you aren't doing that by going to the playoffs, might as well fill seats with your sexy new 'playmaker' that the World Champions didn't want/need.

I thought that's where you were going, but I wasn't sure. Thank you for spelling it out. The only difference is that Darko isn't as productive or talented as Harvin. But I see your point.
I don't know where to go with this team, and clearly those in charge don't either. There are much greater needs than an oft-injured number 1 receiver. Also, draft picks are usually the best remedy for a hopeless team. But this is the Jets, and they haven't drafted well recently. I guess throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Unfortunately, Rex is going to be a casualty. His methods are what they are and I think he can be a successful HC in the league, but he needs the freedom to have "his guys" not just on the roster, but playing. Reports are that this isn't the case. Idzik should be gone after this season, but probably parlays this into another contract. Knowing the Jets luck, Harvin will have two great weeks and then blow out his hip. Idzik can point to that and say it wasn't his fault and he made the right move but, injuries. I'm sure this is just sour grapes collected after years of spinning the tires, but I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel until they get a legit starting QB, a legit RB1, and a legit secondary. Until those needs are addressed, moves like this are like putting a band aid on a shotgun wound.
I'm not sure the Harvin/Darko comparison works. Had the Pistons not drafted Darko, they would've taken Carmelo, Bosh or Wade, any of whom added to that excellent mid-2000's Pistons core could've helped that team win one or two more championships. It's not like Seattle missed out on a star by dealing that 2013 first-rounder, which Minnesota ended up using on Xavier Rhodes.
