This tournament was supposed to be Michael Bradley's time to shine. Instead, he has been the worst player on the team. And so many stupid mistakes - not taking the ball into the corner in the dying seconds against Ghana, which resulted in a Ghana breakaway that thankfully amounted to nothing foreshadowed his stupid careless giveaway to send Ronaldo streaking down the righthand side en route to the equalizer at the death.

What a disappointment.

I do expect the US to advance though. Germany-US will be a boring draw.

As a Browns fan, I have to angrily shake my fist at you.

That was a heckuva match. The US looked so much better on offense than they did against Ghana, it was like night and day to me. Yeah, it sucks that they lost the auto qualifying, but they still have a good shot and they didn't lose. Not bad at all.

I started to look at the possible playoff schedule for the US late in the game yesterday - yes, it's all my fault - and noticed that if the US won their group and won their quarterfinal (Algeria?) they'd have a quarterfinal game on July 4th. Yesterday's game broke all sorts of soccer TV records here. A USA game on Independence Day would shatter them.

(2nd place and a win over probably Belgium? puts them on July 5th, which would also do good but not be as crazy.)

Yeah, a quarterfinal on July 4 would be AWESOME. We have to win the group, and you are right, Algeria is on the inside track for 2nd.

Russia is still alive for 2nd if they beat Algeria and a South Korea loss/draw.

Is "The Bite" going to be bigger than "The Headbutt"? I don't think so. "The Headbutt" was done by a Legend in the WC Finals.

I don't know why the double post. I tried to delete it.

It won't be bigger, but if it's true, this is strike 3 for Suarez. His international career is done. He should (but probably won't) sit for a long time for this.

So I guess you could say Suarez...(puts on sunglasses)...bit off more than he could chew.

Sometimes nothing can be a real cool result.

Portugal have to be kicking themselves for the opening hammering against Germany. If Pepe doesn't act like a moron they probably don't need to score a hatful in the last game to go through.

(Presumably) Belgium will be tough but they haven't looked great so far and a lot of the European countries have struggled so who knows.

Oh yeah, speaking of morons, Uruguay seems to have its share.

I will be in the US for three weeks starting next week, but I'm actually flying over the Atlantic during the (almost certainly) Belgium match, so sadly I'm going to miss it. But I really hope they win so I can be in the country for a quarterfinals (and maybe more?) and go crazy with other people who want to go crazy about it.

Great achievement for Klinsmann and the players, and it's very exciting. But like I said, I'm still bitter about Donovan's exclusion, and I think the team would be better if he were there.

Today's game would have been more exciting had the Portugal heartbreak not happened. With qualification secured and the potential to win the group there, I'd be interested to see how the team played. If the US can beat Belgium, they will play the winner of Argentina/Switzerland.

Regarding Suarez and his ban extending to his club play, I don't believe he should get off lightly just because the third incident happened to come in a Uruguay shirt, and I do think an international-only ban would be getting off lightly. And Liverpool fans are claiming that their club shouldn't be punished for what he does in a Uruguay shirt, but that's nonsense: They chose to keep him - and sign him to a fat extension no less - after the second incident (first as a Liverpool player) knowing that as his misdeeds piled up the punishments were only going to get steeper. What shirt he was wearing when he did it is irrelevant, if he deserves to be banned then he deserves to be banned, and that is a risk Liverpool took when they sold their integrity to stand behind a dirty, dirty player because he also happens to be very good.

It's true that Suarez wouldn't be banned from Uruguay if it happened in a Liverpool shirt, but only because the English FA doesn't have that authority. On the other hand, if it happened in a Liverpool shirt, the ban would have been much greater; as it is, he's only going to miss a few more matches this time around for his club than he did for the second biting incident, and that can only be considered a light punishment from Liverpool's perspective.

Liverpool surely have to sell him. How foolish would they look coming out yet again and telling us how reformed this lunatic is? I just can't imagine why anyone would want to buy his contract, unless they really do believe this argument that the English media - who just voted Suarez player of the year, remember - have a vendetta against him and are blowing this issue out of proportion.

P.S. - Suarez's handball against Ghana remains a moment of individual brilliance, and it's a shame some would-be pundits insist on lumping that in, even as a tangent or "by the way..." kind of thing, with his biting and his alleged racist behavior toward Patrice Evra.

Of course that is not entirely true as he competed (and won some stages) in the Tour before his fight with cancer. No matter what team he signs with (and I guess his history with Bruyneel makes Astana a good candidate)
