About halfway through the third-to-last episode of Fargo, we take an unexpected time jump forward one year, as the key players in our little story find themselves moving on with their lives after the multiple homicide investigation has apparently been solved.

Some are moving on, and they’re more than happy to. Lester is a new man with a new life. Having seemingly gotten away with murdering his wife (and framing his brother for it), Lester orders a brand new washer to replace the ancient one he and his wife kept in the basement...the washer that Lester’s wife used as a way to belittle Lester because he wasn’t man enough to fix it...the washer that Lester used for so long to hide the hammer he used to kill his wife. Lester realizes that his old washer (read: life) is beyond repairing, so why not get a new one?

Later, at his office, Lester gets confronted by the widow Hess (and the idiot Hess sons, making a long-awaited onscreen return) over the fact that her $2 million life insurance claim was denied because Sam lapsed on his payments. Lester of course knew about this when he visited the widow Hess last week, but kept it from her because he wanted to bang her as a way to gain posthumous revenge against his former bully. At the office, the new Lester stands up to the widow Hess’ brow-beating and takes a stapler (!) to the Hess kids when they move in to threaten him. Lester’s display of manliness quite impresses co-worker Susan.

Malvo is ready to move on, but he has one last stop to make. Mr. Wrench, the deaf hitman whose partner, Mr. Numbers, was taken out by Malvo as the two were hunting Malvo down for killing Sam Hess, is being treated at a hospital under police guard (he’s handcuffed to the bed). Malvo confronts Mr. Wrench after he takes out the cop guarding Wrench’s hospital room. Malvo is impressed by Mr. Wrench, in that a) he never came across a deaf hitman before and b) that same deaf hitman came close (closer than anybody else) to taking him out. Malvo gives Wrench the handcuff key he took from the now-dead police guard and invites Wrench to come see him after he heals up, if he “still feels raw about things.”

Meanwhile, Key and Peele, the Fargo FBI agents who failed to notice Malvo walk right past their parked car with an assault rifle before Malvo shot up 22 members of the Fargo organized crime syndicate (as revenge for sending Wrench and Numbers after him), moved on...to the file room. They were able to obtain a grainy ATM surveillance photo of Malvo, and they believe they are now “poised” to hunt Malvo down, but their superior assigns them to the file room anyway. Key thinks it’s just a temporary thing...they’ll be back in the field in two weeks, he says, as he non-chalantly starts bouncing a tennis ball against the wall next to where he and Peele taped the ATM photo of Malvo.

Some are moving on, but not because they want to. Molly is still adamant that the wrong guy got blamed for the murders of Lester’s wife and Bemidji police chief Vern Thurman. Inspired by Vern, her mentor, Molly intricately lays out her investigation with photos, notes and links on a board and presents it to current chief, Bill Oswalt. The investigation is over, we caught the guy, you have to let it go, says Oswalt. Now, come enjoy some cake we got for you to welcome you back to the force after accidentally getting shot.

Molly is defeated, but not all is gloom, as the investigation brought her close to the guy who accidentally shot her, Duluth officer Gus Grimly. Grimly is getting himself ready for a hearing related to that accidental shooting. He’s been showering Molly with quite a lot of apology flowers, and they end up making plans to attend the state fair together. Aww...

And now, we jump forward one year.

Key and Peele are still working the file room. Huh, how unexpected. There is now a sizable amount of paint chipped away at the spot on the wall where Key has been bouncing that tennis ball. To pass the time on this particular day, he poses the paradox to Peele that inspired the title of this episode: if you take one file out of a file room that has many files, do you still have a file room? If you keep taking files out, do you still have a file room? Can you have a file room with zero, or even negative files? Peele calmly addresses Key’s over-chattiness by stating nobody’s taking files out of the file room, people keep bringing more files in. Just then, an errant bounce of the tennis ball by Key knocks down a board that was covering up that photo of Malvo they put up one year ago. Key and Peele stare intently at that long-forgotten relic. Hmm.

Gus and Molly are married! Gus has his daughter Greta, and Molly is with child. Looks like they bought a new house together. Gus is now a mailman (by choice?). Molly is still a police officer. Looks like this cute couple has actually moved on. Well, not quite. Molly still has her photo and notes board, which is now hung up in a room in the new house. Molly hasn’t quite let things go. The board has one significant addition: a copy of the grainy ATM photo of Malvo from Fargo. She’s apparently been phoning the FBI repeatedly because she has information on Malvo that should help the FBI solve the Fargo shooting spree, but they’re too busy with other things, it seems. If only she could find a way to hook up with Key and Peele.

Despite her inability to let things go, Molly perhaps recognizes that she has a good life now with Gus and Greta. One night, while in bed with Gus, as she begins to doze off, she says “things are OK.” Is she saying that to Gus or to herself? Then, in the background, an old black-and-white murder mystery movie is playing on the bedroom TV. One of the characters in the movie talks about being hit in the head and knocked out, perhaps planting a subconscious reminder in Molly’s brain about how Lester was found the night Lester’s wife and Vern were murdered.

And now, we come to Lester. Lester is a completely transformed man. He’s married to Susan, the co-worker he impressed after he stood up to the widow Hess. He’s confident, charismatic, well-spoken. He and Susan are in Vegas so Lester could receive the 2007 Insurance Salesman Of The Year Award. After the award ceremony, Lester sends Susan to their hotel room so he could go for a “nightcap” at the hotel bar. What he’s really doing is following a group of hot women to the bar so he could show off his award. As he orders a drink, he hears the voice of the man who helped set off the chain of events one year ago that brought him to this point. A now silver-haired Lorne Malvo is sitting at a table in the bar chatting with a group of people. And now, the fun begins.

Finally got caught up on the DVR, and am glad to see other people talking about this show. The movie is in my Top 5 all time favorites, so i was skeptical going in. While I can see it taking place in that same universe, it stands on it's own as well. Perfect casting all around, too.

I was pretty shocked to see the One Year Later jump, and was wondering if maybe this was going to be the final episode and I just wasn't aware of it.

Love this show.

Loved Stephen Root just casually appearing in the background at the end. Can't wait to see more of him next week.

Man I hate Bob Odenkirk's character. He just wants to close the case because they already celebrated catching the guy. So frustrating. Molly wanted to push it until she talked to the old Chief's widow and she just wanted to give her closure, I guess.

I thought it was the season finale. Gus became the mailman he always wanted to be, got the girl, has a family. Lester won Salesman of the Year. Alas, the previews said 2 more episodes to go. At this point, I don't want them to catch Malvo, but I want them to bring down Lester Nygaard.

Agreed 1000% on Lester, but Molly and Gus need to bring down Malvo too, not just to have Molly find justice for Vern's murder, but also to have Gus find some sort of redemption after being scared off by Malvo during the traffic stop.

Well... he did redeem himself by capturing Malvo as Gus was investigating the murdered dog but due to the incompetence of his boss and Chief of Police Bill Oswalt Malvo was freed. What else can he do?

Bob Odenkirk is amazing because his Chief Bill is institutionalized evil. You can tell that the guy himself isn't inherently bad, since he took in the African Refugee, but the way he destroys Solverson's case is heartbreaking. He needs some sort of comeuppance, but I'm not sure what. I don't want him dead, but Molly needs to be promoted to Chief.

I can't be the only concerned about Molly being pregnant now. The last pregnant lady lost her husband. I could see Gus seeking redemption in the face of Malvo and it not ending well.

I'm curious about the fate of Lester's brother. I don't recall what he was doing during the pilot, but I'm surprised he couldn't come up with an alibi to disprove his role in Vern's murder.

I didn't get to chime in in the other thread since we were a few weeks behind and just caught up, but this show has been awesome. So glad that Molly didn't die after getting shot in the blizzard.

If I was Cuba Gooding Jr. I'd be pissed that it didn't appear as if Sean Penn gave a crap about defending *his* honour. At least he's a fellow Oscar Winner. I thought Rock was very good, and I hope he gets to do it again.
