I didn't expect a long match as all the promo pictures of this episode didn't feature Prince Oberyn or the Mountain. The fight started the last 5 minutes of the whole episode.

Gilly is getting harassed in Whore-ville but she hears an owl and knew it was the Wildling's call. Sure enough, the Wildlings brutally murdered everyone in the town. Ygritte heard a baby crying and found Gilly and her baby but instead of killing her, she told her to be quiet and lets her be.

Samwell back at Castle Black realizes what a horrible idea it was to move Gilly to the village seeing as the Wildlings were attacking other villages. Jon Snow and friends of the Night Watch aren't allowed to engage the Wildlings. The others try to comfort him and saying Gilly might have survived like Sam survived against Craster and the White Walker. One of them asked that the last person alive burn the rest of them so they don't come back as White Walkers.

The Unsullied were bathing at the river and Grey Worms looks towards the women section seeing a naked Missandei. Missandei was kinda creeped out and tells Daenarys. They both wonder if they cut off both the pillar and the stones when they castrate the Unsullied. Grey Worms meets up with Missandei after to apologize but Missandei makes it seem like she was cool with him checking her out.

A boy delivers a scroll to Ser Barriston. Ser Barriston confronts Ser Jorah about the contents of the scroll. It was a pardon from Robert Baratheon. Ser Jorah insisted on talk to Danny privately but Ser Barriston told him he will never be alone with Danny. Daenarys has a formal talk with Ser Jorah. It was all true, he was pardoned for spying on Danny. He even told them about Danny being pregnant with Khal Drogo's kid. And no wonder Ser Jorah knew the drink was poisoned and prevented her from drinking it! Daenarys banishes Jorah, who professes his love for her. Too late, buddy.

Ramsey sends Theon Greyjoy into a castle to inform the Iron Born they will be free if they surrender. Lots of dead people and horses due to some diseases spreading. The head honcho spat on Theon and said they wouldn't surrender but the guy directly behind him crushed his skull in. He'll take the deal. Of course, they were all flayed by Ramsey. Dumb asses. Roose takes Ramsey aside and shows him just how big the North really is and officially promotes him to a Bolton. No longer Ramsey Snow.

The higher ups at the Eyrie are questioning Littlefinger about the death of Lysa Arryn. He claims she committed suicide. They called upon Sansa to testify. Amazingly, Sansa told a different story than what actually happened. Lysa got jealous when she saw Littlefinger giving Sansa a peck in the cheek and was threatening to push Sansa off the Moon door. Littlefinger tried to reason with her but she went crazy and took her own life. After the trial, Littlefinger asked Sansa why... if they executed Littlefinger what would they do to Sansa?

The Hound and Arya finally makes to the Eyrie and was told by the guard that Lady Lysa died 3 days ago. Arya couldn't help but laugh wildly at how bad her luck always is. Littlefinger tells the council that they need to back Robin as the new Lord of the Vale. Robin of course, is terrified, but Littlefinger thinks he can make this work.

Tyrion and Jaime shoots the breeze about their crazy cousin who got dropped on his head by the wet nurse and was simple. He kept crushing bugs and they could never figure out why. Prince Oberyn is called The Red Viper of Dorne so he has to be good, right?

Finally the big Trial by Combat begins. Tyrion is not happy that Prince Oberyn isn't wearing much armor (so he can move easier), not even a helmet. And to top that off, he is drinking before the fight! Oberyn has a wooden spear and doing luchador flippy flippy moves while the Mountain is fully armored with a gigantic sword. Oberyn slices up the Mountain and wants him to admit he raped and murdered Oberyn's sister, and murdered her children. The Mountain chops up his spear but the squire gives him a new one. Eventually he stabs the spear through the Mountain's chest but doesn't want the Mountain to die until he said Oberyn's sister's name. He wonders who gave the order and while he was distracted looking at Tywin and Cercei the Mountain trips him, punches his teeth out and crushes his head. The Mountain finally admits he raped and murdered Elia Martell and crushed her head while at the same time, crushing Oberyn's head while Ellaria Sand screams. Tywin announces that Tyrion is guilty and sentenced to death.

It looks like the epic Episode 9 of the season will be the battle between the Night's Watch and the Wildlings. I'll be out of town next week so feel free to start a thread.

In the tradition of the Incredibles, it was simply too much monologuing for the Viper.  There was some discussion amongst our group if the Mountain also died at the end of the battle, as in he gave every last ounce of energy he had to finish Oberyn off.  Is the 'winner' of a trial by combat simply who dies last?  Also, who knew the Mountain was such a Kids In The Hall fan.

If there's a way for Mance's army to overtake the Wall and kill everyone while finding some way to spare Sam, Gilly, some of the friendly background Crows and (I guess) Jon Snow and then keep going south and just decimate Roose goddamn Bolton, that would be great.

FINALLY, some drama in Daenerys' storyline this season.  Honestly, it felt kind of like this was given the short shrift given how Dany/Jorah has been one of the key pairings of the entire series.  Given the time spent in Meereen, I would've rather seen a lot more of her initial reaction to Barristan's news and her behind-closed-doors decision to exile him than a romantic subplot between two C-level characters.  (That said, my 'Missandei is the hottest woman on the show' argument gained a lot of steam this week.)

Ah, you beat me to it. :-)

I was a little disappointed in the Trial By Combat, as it felt like it had really been hyped up quite a bit and yet really was only a few minutes. Shame Oberyn is gone - he was one of the more refreshing characters to appear on the show.

Aside from that quibble, this was one of the stronger episodes of this season, as it seemed to have just the right amount of politicking mixed with the right amount of action. Funny that, earlier this season, I was complaining about there being too few heavies to replace Joffrey. Both Littlefinger and the Bolton's are filling in nicely.

Too few heavies??

Littlefinger, Roose Bolton, Ramsey Bolton, Reek*, Tywin, Cersei, Jamie**, Melisandre, Stannis' wife, possibly still Stannis himself, Walder Frey, Balon Greyjoy, Maester Pycelle, those two old bastards leading the Night's Watch who only exist to sneer at Jon Snow, Meryn Trant, the Mountain, the Hound***, the cannibals riding with Ygritte, and the looming fear that Daenerys may still develop into the series' major villain. That is a killer list of bad guys right there, and that's not even counting shades-of-gray types like Varys or forces of nature like the White Walkers.

* = I realize that there are still lots of Theon fans out there and he's certainly become *more* sympathetic given his horrible fate over the last two seasons. But hey everyone, remember season two? Fuck Theon Greyjoy.

** = Pushing Bran out a window? Yeah, that's a paddlin'

*** = He's still on Arya's list for a reason.

So by 'heavy', I really mean 'focal villain'.

Certainly, there are some 'not-so-nice' people on your list, but I think you're stretching calling some of these chacraters 'heavies'. Separating out Tywin, Cersei, Pycelle and The Mountain, when they're all essentially on the same 'team', is... pushing it. Does anyone really think that Pycelle is a threat to... anyone?

The Greyjoys are ineffective at... well, everything, The Freys haven't made an appearance since the Red Wedding. Stannis (who *might* be a heel) has lost every battle he's fought and is broke.

And even someone like Littlefinger, who I think is definitely a 'bad guy' and I'm sure he's up to no good, his true motivations are pretty vague now that Catelyn is dead. Even in this episode, he seemed a bit lost and unsure of his next moves.

I guess my point really is that the main antagonist isn't really clear to me since Joffrey's death. Sure Tywin and Cersei are about as close as we can get - but I don't think either of them are as despicable as was Joffrey.

Uh, he's a member of the small council, and just gave damning testimony against Tyrion.

Tyrion was not condemned by Pycelle's testimony alone.

It's pretty clear that Tywin and Cersei have little respect for him and only keep him around because he's loyal. He's a lacky, nothing more.

One person's lackey is another person's effective weapon. He may not be dangerous on his own, but the general population trusts him, which makes him dangerous when wielded by the Lannisters. His mastery of potions/poisons makes him a credible witness to the means of Tyrion's "treason".

Let me leave this loaded gun sitting around my house in the open. As long as nobody picks it up, it's not dangerous!

Pycelle isn't a "big bad" by any means, but still, I'm hoping he gets some comeuppance somewhere down the line. Frankly, Joffrey was in many ways a lackey himself, just a puppet to sit on the iron throne while Tywin was really in charge of everything.

Keep in mind that Pycelle is a lot more "on the ball" than he lets on. Twyin (and I suspect Varys) know it, but most underestimate him. He's been working for the Lannisters but ultimately he still serves The Citadel.

I think we're splitting hairs here, folks...

Again, I'm not arguing that there are no 'bad people'. But no one has quite filled the role of 'main antagonist' quite as nicely as Joffrey. If you look back, Joffrey:

* Beheaded Ned Stark, thereby starting the war
* Took credit for fending off Stannis when actually ran like a coward
* Publicly abused and humiliated Sansa
* Tortured and murdered Ros
* Ordered the execution of all infants and children suspected to be Robert's bastards
* Allowed the kingdom to fall into ruins

Most, if not all, of these actions were taken against the advice of Tywin and Cersei - both of whom seemed to recognize that Joffrey was a monster and expressed horror at his actions and his attitude.

So all I am saying is that I really don't see the same 'gee, I really hope that character gets what's coming to them' in any other character. Maybe Ramsey Bolton, but he's a relatively new characters in the scheme of things.

I think Littlefinger was only unsure of whether Sansa would defend him. Other than that I think he knows exactly what he's doing and if this is a game he's probably winning at this point.

Well, I guess Tywin still has control of the crown technically, but there are definitely some major chinks in the armor, especially if the Mountain did give his last gasp when killing Oberyn.

RIP Oberyn, you were far more entertaining in the TV show than the book.

I'm usually not the least bit affected when it comes to TV violence, but I was stunned silent for a good fifteen minutes after the show was over. One of the most brutal things I've seen on TV in a long time.

The Daenerys/Jorah breakup was quite sad. Dany not even looking directly at Jorah was the worst. Emilia Clarke did a super job here.

Wait, this *wasn't* episode 9? Oh, shit.
