Due to his racist comments that have sparked controversy throughout the league, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life, fined him $2.5 million, and will urge the Board of Governors to exercise its authority to force Sterling to sell the team.

“Effective immediately, I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers organization or the NBA,” Silver said. “Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices. He may not be present at any Clippers facility. He may not participate in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team. He will also be barred from attending NBA Board of Governors meetings or participating in any other league activity.”

Sterling was caught on tape making a series of racist remarks to his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, whom he chastised for bringing African-Americans to ball games.

The Clippers, Heat, Rockets and Blazers all engaged in silent protests against Sterling by donning black socks in their recent playoff games. The Clippers' website currently redirects to a page, black background with white lettering, with the words "WE ARE ONE" and the LAC logo.

WOW. I knew the hammer was going to come down hard, but I didn't expect a lifetime ban. Yet I find it hard to disagree with it. Thoughts?

Sterling should've been kicked out of the league 20 years ago.

Here's a question; if the owner of the Orlando Magic donates more money to conservative groups advocating traditional marriage (he has done this before) - will he be ousted as well?

Only when there are enough non-traditionally married NBA players to make his actions look like he's biting the hands that feed him.

I like how Silver handled this, especially considering it is his first big to-do. I imagine Stern was at least contacted as counsel for this decision, although I also imagine him wringing his hands, hemming and hawing, while hoping it blows over (as he did with Sterling for the entirety of his tenure as Commish). There isn't much that could've been done that would be going too far in this case, considering how public this is and who is talking.

I find it amusing that, according to the strict letter of the edict, Sterling couldn't attend any NBA game, even a non-Clippers one, if he bought a ticket.

My mother noticed that and said with a grin, "Are they taking ESPN off his television, too?".

If it affects the bottom line of the NBA, anything is possible.

Considering everybody knew he held these views for, how long, and they're just doing something about it now that it's in the mainstream? I mean I'm glad he's gone but if you think it was done for any reason other then the fact that it was going to affect the league financially, you're out of your mind.

If things head south for the Nets this season, he'll probably end up getting traded to SA (or Dallas) by February anyway.
