The Recap for WWE Raw 4.14.14, live from Birmingham, AL.

We open with with entire roster (including Vince, sans Bryan) out on the ramp, and a beautiful tribute package for the Ultimate Warrior, including footage of his promo from last week. They toll the bell ten times in his honor.

Match 1: IC Title #1 Contendership Tournament: Alberto Del Rio v Rob Van Dam
It's the battle of the three-letter acronyms! Considering that Del Rio has a clean pinfall win over Big E, this tournament is a demotion. RVD starts off hot with a monkey flip and a crossbody for 2, but Del Rio comes back and starts working over the ribs. Suplex and a floatover gets 2 and Del Rio continues beating him up as Big E looks on backstage. Van Dam dumps ADR but whiffs on a moonsault and gets tossed into the guardrail as we head to a break. Back from the break, Del Rio kicks out of Rolling Thunder and plants Van Dam with a DDT for 2. RVD hits knees on a split-legged moonsault and gets caught with a lung blower for 2. Del Rio takes too long coming off the top but gets clobbered by a kick on the way down. Van Dam wants the Five Star, but ADR crotches him on the turnbuckle, but the corner enzuigiri only gets 2. RVD stops the Cross Armbreaker with a legscissors takedown and a CLOSE nearfall. Del Rio heads to the top but gets his legs swept out from underneath and the Five Star Frog Splash finishes in 10 minutes. 1 for 1.

They explain afterwards that Daniel Bryan is not here tonight on account of his honeymoon after marrying Brie Bella last week.

Our first Ultimate Moment is his IC Title win against Honkey Tonk Man from Summerslam 1988. The Authority meet up with Randy Orton and Batista, and Triple H is concerned about the Shield. He wants the three of them to be on the same page, but neither Dave nor Randy are okay with that.

Match 2: Rybaxel v The Rhodes Brothers
Axel and Goldust start, and the Rhodes Brothers work over Axel with quick tags. Running kneedrop from Goldust gets 2 and he controls until he unnecessarily goes after Ryback and gets caught in the wrong corner. Ryback chokes away in the ropes, and gets the shoulder thrusts in the corner. Axel comes in for a brief while and then it's Ryback again as he grabs a chinlock. Goldust fights out with a corner elbow and it's a double KO. Cody comes in off the hot tag and cleans house, including Ryback with the moonsault! Ryback heads outside for a breather, but Cody dives onto him. Back inside, Cody gets two off a springboard dropkick as Goldust gets dumped. Cody takes care of Axel with the Disaster Kick and wants another on Ryback, but he picks him off mid-air with the Meathook and that's it in 6 minutes. 2 for 2. Decent formula match here. Rybaxel's mashup of Ryback and Axel's themes sucks.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today's a gift. That's why they call it present. #BoLieve.

Match 3: Non-Title: Paige v Alicia Fox
They lock up and Paige gives her a clean break, but Alicia turns up the heel by pushing her around and hits several vicious backbreakers. Northern Lights Suplex gets 2 for Alicia and she grabs a chinlock. Paige fights back with some short-arm clotheslines and a dropkick and the Scorpion Crosslock finishes in 4 minutes. The crowd love Paige. 3 for 3. Short and sweet. Alicia brought the vicious and Paige hit back with vicious of her own, even as the commentators debated whether she'd be a flash in the pan. And the Scorpion Crosslock looked pretty great.

Match 4: Non-Title: The Usos v Randy Orton and Batista
Classy Warrior-paint on the faces of the Usos tonight. They jump Orton and Batista immediately and dump them outside. Stereo dives! Us-O! Orton slows it down as he makes it back inside and beats up on Jey, but he hits back with a big chop and a splash into the corner for 2. Jey keeps coming but Orton stops him with the inverted backbreaker and now Dave comes in to hammer home the advantage. Suplex gets two for Batista and Orton is back in with the stomps and stops a Jey comeback. Dave puts his head down too early on a cross but still gets a spinebuster for 2. Batista runs into a Samoan Drop for 2, and now Orton's had enough and goes to town on Jimmy Uso outside. The Shield suddenly appear to wipe the floor with him for the DQ finish in 4 minutes. They have the numbers on Batista, and it's Superman Punch time! Orton saves him from further abuse, though. 3 for 4. I wouldn't mind a longer match between these teams.

The next Ultimate Moment is the title win at Wrestlemania 6.

Paul Heyman is out to gloat about his client Brock Lesnar conquering the streak. Brock has instructed Paul to show some photos from Wrestlemania, and Paul goes on to claim that Brock has immortalized Undertaker. Heyman presents his new client, the next top-level challengers, the #KingofSwing, Cesaro!
Match 5: IC Title #1 Contendership Tournament: Cesaro v Mark Henry
The crowd is already chanting "Ce-Sa-Ro" before this even starts. They lock up in the middle of the ring, and Henry wins that and manhandles him for a bit. Cesaro takes a breather and gets some advice from Heyman. That apparently works as he starts wailing on Henry with huge forearms and uppercuts in the corner. Mark keeps fighting him off but Cesaro keeps coming until Mark bowls him over for 2. Cesaro escapes the World's Strongest Slam and nails a gorgeous flying Swiss Death. Neutralizer (!) finishes clean in 3 minutes.3 for 5. Not much of a match, but a pretty great showcase of Cesaro and Heyman together.

Triple H instructs Brad Maddox (he was in the ARMBAR!) to inform the Shield that they'll compete in the main event tonight.

Match 6: Alexander Rusev v Xavier Woods
So finally poor Woods gets his match versus Rusev without Tyler Breeze's interfering. Rusev dominates with some big kicks and nails him with Catatonic. The Accolade finishes in less than a minute. R-Truth attacks him postmatch, but Lana steps in the way of their fight, waiting for the perfect moment to tactically sic Rusev onto Truth. Big kick takes care of Truth, too. 3 for 6. Squashariffic.

The next Ultimate Moment is the cage match against Rick Rude from Summerslam 1990. RIP both guys.

Match 7: IC Title #1 Contendership Tournament: Jack Swagger v Sheamus 8.39
Swagger clobbers away in the corner until Sheamus evades him and unleashes his own clubbering. He wants the Beats of the Bodhran, but Zeb Colter distracts the ref long enough for Swagger to plant Sheamus on the floor. Back inside, that gets two and Swagger locks on a chickenwing. Sheamus runs into a belly-to-belly for 2. Short clothesline gets 2 for Swagger and he grabs that chickenwing again. Sheamus fights out with a big clothesline and some big running axehandles. Sheamus uses his knees to great effect and gets 2. Beats of the Bodhran find the mark this time, leaving Swagger lying in the ropes. Flying Shoulderblock only gets 2, however. Sheamus wants a springboard shoulderblock but Swagger avoids that and Sheamus lands in the ankle lock. He fights out but gets dumped outside and Swagger drives some knees into him. Sheamus heads inside first and Swagger takes a second too long, which results in him being run over with the Brogue Kick for the pin in 8 minutes. 4 for 7. Zeb Colter is less than enamored with this. Sheamus gets extra points for selling that ankle all the way back.

Damien Sandow is out to tell us that he's the most deserving person in the WWE, but the Big Show interrupts him about two sentences in. Sandow vows to be heard and claims that no one can silence him. Sandow is outraged that the crowd would cheer for Big Show. This cannot end well for him. He turns his attention to Show, asking him what he has to say about all this. Show looks more sleepy than anything else. Sandow thinks that you can see the future in him, but pokes Big Show in the chest once too many times and that earns him the WMD punch. Well, that was a waste of time.

Bray Wyatt and his family join us to talk about society becoming a vile and putrid thing. You see what they want you to see, but Bray is different. Where there is silence, he can hear symphony. He goes by a thousand names, seducer, accuser, but never once has he lied. But John Cena has lied. He hides behind his porcelain smile but he is a beast. Bray promises to save the kids from Cena, but he won't slay the monster. Not yet. Bray wants to come out and play. John Cena's up for that - more cheers than boos today. The last thing anyone wants to see is a Cena push, but John just wants to have fun. John thinks the Wyatts are too serious and they could be the life of the party given a little happy hour. The people like to have a good time, so John wants to put a smile on Bray's face. This leads to a photoshop operation that only King finds funny. Bray laughs it off, and he wants serious Cena, but John points out that when John gets serious, Bray gets beat. John wants Bray to back up what he says without his family, and he challenges him to a cage match at Extreme Rules. Bray won't let Cena command him in his world, and to prove it, he leads the crowd in a rendition of "He's got the whole world in his hands." 5 for 8. Tremendous work from Bray, and Cena's always game when he's serious about it. I shuddered when the photoshop thing started, but they did well to recover the segment with their solid work afterwards.

Match 8: Santino and Emma v Fandango and Layla 9.19
Apparently Fandango broke up with Summer Rae over Twitter last week. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Santino dominates Fandango and prepares the Cobra, but Layla tags herself in to save him. Emma traps Layla in the Dilemma but a distraction allows Layla to bring Emma down hard from the top turnbuckle for the win in 2 minutes. 5 for 9. Layla looks delicious tonight.

Stephanie berates Kane for having a moral code. She calls him pathetic and wonders what happened to the devil's favorite demon, which prompts Kane to harness the Power of the Mask (including fake hair)! Kane promises to eviscerate Daniel Bryan and send him to the depths of hell. Another top-notch performance from Steph here.

Match 9: IC Title #1 Contendership Tournament: Dolph Ziggler v Bad News Barrett 9.37
Barrett controls with some big rights and kicks away in the corner after leading the crowd in a "Bad News" chant. He stomps away but misses a knee, allowing Dolph to take over and grab a headlock. Barrett forces him in the corner to break and chokes him against the ropes. Dolph comes back with a nice dropkick and dumps him outside, where they slug it out until Dolph goes into the post face-first. Yikes. Back from the break, Barrett has Dolph in a headlock. Dolph fights out and sidesteps Barrett as he goes into the post shoulder-first. Dolph gets a big crossbody and a neckbreaker for 2. Dolph runs right into the Wasteland, but it only gets 2! Whoa! Barrett can't believe this, and takes too long setting up a pumphandle slam, allowing Dolph to get 2 off the Fameasser. Dolph misses a charge in the corner, but recovers to fight it out with Barrett on the top-rope. Barrett throws him off once, but Dolph brings him down anyway with the X-Factor! But it can't finish. The crowd deems this awesome. Dolph comes running with a full head of steam, but right into the Winds of Change for another nearfall! It's Bullhammer time, but Dolph rolls him up for 2. Barrett manages to create just enough separation for a second Bullhammer and that's goodnight Dolph at 13 minutes. 6 for 10. Wade's afraid he's got some bad news! Standing here is the next Intercontinental Champion. Match of the night so far.

Match 10: The Shield v 3MB, Alberto Del Rio, Jack Swagger, Fandango, Titus O'Neal, Rybaxel, Alexander Rusev, and Bad News Barrett
Rollins starts off with Slater, and that goes about as well for Slater as you'd expect. Enzuigiri for Slater brings in McIntyre and Rollins gets caught in the wrong corner. Titus and Rusev have their turns and Swagger comes in with big knees. Ryback hits a gorilla press and dumps Rollins, but Reigns wipes him out with the spear and it's BREAKIN' LOOSE! That's the Sportz Entertainment Finish at 4 minutes. Rollins with a CON HILO on everyone! Back inside though, and the numbers catch up to the Shield, and they're all down. And now here's Evolution! RKO and Batista Bomb put Reigns down and Rollins gets the same treatment. Ambrose gets the Batista Bomb-Neckbreaker treatment (well, kinda. Orton missed), and Reigns gets the Pedigree. Evolution stand tall to end the show. 7 for 11. I'm pretty conflicted about this - I didn't love it, but I did think it was a fairly efficient way of moving Triple H away from Daniel Bryan and setting up a new challenge for face Shield to conquer. The Evolution reunion makes sense because it presents the Shield against a credible threat.

Wrestling Counter: 55 minutes.

A pretty good, breezy show, with a great match between Barrett and Ziggler. The new IC tournament is interesting, and I'm glad that Triple H has something to do other than messing with Daniel Bryan. Kane's a decent placeholder feud until Bray frees himself or Brock becomes available again.

That's it for me today. I'm going to be out of the country for three weeks and I won't have access to live Raw, so if someone else wants to recap for the next three weeks, the gig's all yours.

I think the Evolution stuff will be good, it is just going to take time to get there and this beatdown will make a nice mash up video package.

Right when I think I am okay with John Cena, he pulls this goofy having fun garbage again.

.. but hey, how about JBL acting like a total shit bag about Paige having to prove herself, mock her, then being amazed by her work only to be reminded by Lawler that he is the GM of NXT. I hate you JBL.

Sorry to hear that, I do enjoy the recaps. Have fun!

I enjoyed the Intercontinental tourney matches, I kinda wish they would do more tournaments. Bring back King of the Ring, have annual tournaments to drum up interest in the US and Intercontinental belts, have the challenger for one of the filler PPVs determined by tourney ... all kinds of things they could do.

I enjoyed seeing Paige work, hopefully they'll start giving the Divas longer matches, I know that when she's allowed to really go Paige can provide the match of the night ... and when's the last time you could say that about a Diva's match on RAW? If ever?

Speaking of, let Emma wrestle more, dammit, and stop throwing her in matches with Santino against Fandango and whoever he's paired up with that week. It's the same thing every show and it's boring as hell. Emma needs a better program than "Santino's quirky girlfriend".

That Photoshop was god awful, guys. Srsly. Thank goodness they have two of the company's best mic workers out there to salvage the segment. I love how they've been forced to acknowledge Wyatt as a tweener by default, though he's definitely a full-on crazy heel by behavior.

I'm ambivalent about Evolution's return, I mostly skipped their initial run and I'm not thrilled to see HHH continuing to get lots and lots of screen time. I suppose it gives Batista and Orton something to do while we see the Hell No showdown. I hope they show a lot of clips from their Tag Team run in the video packages the next few weeks, because that's where Bryan picked up a lot of his current white-hot face heat. I also hope that Bryan/Kane ends up being Extreme Rulez, though I know that'll probably result in a giant Shield vs Evolution run-in clusterfuck.

Now that they've brought the free week back for the Network I may give it a shot, I've been wanting to check out Wrestlemania even though I know the results. Not to mention all the on-demand and NXT stuff.

What exactly is the point of holding an eleven-against-three wrestling match, with legal tags and everything? Just send the roster out there to beat up The Shield. It looks so stupid to have ten guys standing on the apron behaving like good rule-abiding wrestlers.

I love Rusev. So badass. I love him most because he's not playing the evil foreigner, he's playing an ice cold robot who kills you. His lack of facial expression when locking in the Accolade is the best. But...stop fucking around with his chyron! Stop switching it and please, please, please leave it in Cyrillic.

Please release a new Cesaro shirt so I can buy lots of it.

It's not so much that Cena's "jokes" bother me anymore. When he plays it like he did tonight against Bray, he is the most unbearable human being alive. I'm used to that now. But they're treading dangerous ground here. I thought Bray winning at Mania was the better choice from a storytelling perspective. Instead, Cena wins, and he gets the upper hand, which allows him to go into "Joke Mode!" Now what happens? If Cena wins this war, that effectively ends the Wyatts' run at the top. I'm highly curious to know what the direction of this story is. Maybe now really is the time for Cena to embrace the hate #brokenrecord?

On a tangent, I can't get over how natural Bray Wyatt is on the mic. He's the best talker in the company today. It pained me to hear him do the "ha ha John Cena, your jokes are so funny, just kidding not really" response.

So I'm confused about one point. Orton and Batista told HHH that The Shield was *his* problem and left, only for Stephanie to smirk and say "I have a plan." What got the two back with HHH was The Shield beating them down during their match with the Usos. Where was Stephanie's plan? Was her plan supposed to be the 11-on-3 match? If so, that wouldn't have been effective without Orton and Batista already coming around to HHH's side after the attack.

Bray *wants* Cena to embrace the hate, to go dark, to lose himself. If he does that, Wyatt knows he's gotten into his head & is winning the war. Cena busting jokes is the antithesis of what Wyatt wants, and is the thing that is most likely to get into Wyatt's head & put him off his game. The jokes are helping Cena retain his humanity by keeping the buzzards at bay.

It appears Stephanie's plan was to get the Shield to attack Orton & Batista. HHH/Stephanie waiting for them after the match was meant to subtly telegraph what they did. it was a read between the lines bit, as most everything has been with them. (I wonder if that's a purposeful change in the way they tell stories - there's a lot less spelling out evil plans out loud of late in general.) I guess we're going to have to wait to find out how she possibly could've done that. Maybe Kane will blurt it out again?

I felt like people (myself included) were so happy to see Cesaro join Paul Heyman not just because Paul Heyman is great, but because it was a guarantee Cesaro was going up up up for sure. There's no guarantee they would've got around to doing it if he just turned face - feuding from Jack Swagger may not necessarily get Cesaro out of the opener - but they're required to at least try if they've put Heyman with him. Tonight was pretty good sign that was happening. The win over Henry was nice, but the real sign was Cesaro being too important to be part of the scrum of disposable midcard heels at the end of the show. That's treating Cesar with respect he definitely wouldn't have gotten a month ago. (By the same token, it was way too soon to have Rusev in that match.)

Tt the same time, I would be up for Bad News Barrett versus Big E right now. And Cesaro really shouldn't win the IC title unless they've already worked out the second and third challengers for it. This strategy (?) of doing a secondary title change feud and then forgetting about the title belt for six months isn't really helping out the champions.

WWE could probably put together quite a video package for the Kane/Bryan 1 year arc (with the same creative editing seen elsewhere) and at least we can be pretty sure Daniel Bryan isn't losing the title after one month, but it's not a particularly strong first challenger. (Even WWE pointed it out, noting how many times Bryan's already beaten Kane - so I guess Kane's going to do something awful next Monday.) Bryan/Kane would clearly be the third biggest match on a show with Wyatt/Cena in a cage and Evolution/Shield, and we can already wonder if they'd be doing this exact title match if Extreme Rules was still a PPV and not a Network Special.

I read it more as her plan was to turn Kane into a monster again to aid against both Bryan and the Shield. Orton and Batista coming around on evolution was just icing on the cake.

I'm okay that Cena beat Bray at WrestleMania. I felt that feud was building to a face win as Cena played Batman to Bray's Joker and that it was all about Bray beating Cena by getting to him psychologically. I think it was the right ending, because Bray's character isn't about the wrestling and is all about being evil, so he doesn't have to be the best wrestler, or the guy who beats everybody. Plus, Cena has spent all PPV year on his back putting over Randy Orton and it made sense for him to win.

That said, I hope Bray beats the holy hell out of Cena at Extreme Rules. This time, he needs the win. It doesn't have to be clean. In fact, the dirtier and eviler the better. Cena's more than proven over the last year that he's decent on the mic, but tonight he was pretty lame.

I'm all for Evolution being back even if the setup kind of makes no sense. I love that we don't have to put up with more Bryan-HHH for the foreseeable future. That feud had the right beginning, middle, and end and was timed perfectly, and now HHH can work on getting the Shield guys over. I expect this match to headline the PPV, unless they decide to end with the cage match. I think it'll be a good one.

I can't believe they're actually paying off that Kane mask they've kept selectively remembering all year. I think "Team Hell No Explodes!" is a good first feud for Bryan, like Ryback was for Cena last year. There's certainly history. That said, it's not a big match. They could still close the show with it to send the crowd home happy.

The Warrior video package, 10 bell salute, and last time the theme music would be played was how I was hoping they'd do it. It's a shame they didn't do it for Savage, but I get it since Warrior was just there on RAW last week. He was treated like an active talent, same as Owen/Eddie/Pillman/Benoit while Savage was "outside the WWE family" at the time of his death.

Even Vince was out there. I think, for all the legal battles they had over the years, Vince and Warrior always respected each other's bullheadedness. Has Vince made amends with pretty much everyone now? It seems that, as everyone gets older and the fray has passed, there's just less time for bad blood with anyone. Except mayyybe Ted Turner.

It really is amazing how Warrior got the perfect sendoff after all of those dark periods in his career. Seeing pics of Warrior with Hogan and Vince was surreal.

I like the idea of this IC Title tournament and with Cesaro, RVD, and Barrett in the mix, hopefully it ends with Cesaro beating Big E for the IC Title and bringing its prestige up in a way Curtis Axel wasn't able to last year. They kind of have to do it and give it the same prominence the World Title had last year. I think it's about time to change the strap to black or navy blue, or something that isn't white, too, to symbolically show that shit's changing.

I think Barrett winning the IC Title doesn't help him because he's already had that belt while Cesaro would be a fresh face holding it and potentially a sign that things are changing. I agree that they can't handle his reign the same as the previous champions before him.

It's really as simple to me as treating Cesaro as if he were holding what the WHC was a year before. Make his first PPV defense against Swagger as "The Real Americans Explodes!" just to set him up, throw Del Rio at him, have him headline a raw against Batista or Orton in a title match (that ends screwy to set up something else). Establish that the big names want it, too, and then have Cesaro defend it in an epic "Mr. Perfect" positioned prestigious IC Title match at SummerSlam against Seth Rollins or Dean Ambrose.

They can do it, they just need to recalibrate.

Symmetry.

Highlights of the night for me: Paige's Scorpion Crosslock, the IC tournament, and Sheamus' & Big E's ToysRUs commercial.

Lowlight was easily Damien Sandow getting the WMD. As I type this, I think how much I would enjoy a Bryan-Sandow match. Or how much I enjoyed Sheamus-Sandow in the past. *SIGH*.

My girls loved the Adam Rose vignettes so much, we watched NXT this week just to see what Adam Rose's entrance looked like. They are definitely looking forward to his RAW debut now. As a bonus, they also thought the "Bo" movement was hilarious. Now they keep quoting, "I GAVE YOU COOKIES!".

I'm afraid I have some Bad News for you. Paige and Emma's presentation since being called up are a pretty strong indication that they have no intention of bringing back prestige to the Diva's division, even though they've got the talent to do so. It's a real shame, considering both the quality of the female wrestlers and their presentation down in NXT.

Tom Chrisley is some kind of millionaire and his show is a documentary/sitcom. The opening was..interesting as it involved his wife and son trying to hide that they were out buying snacks to the point of disposing of the evidence before they got home or something. It seemed more like a parody of a reality series.

Question: Does Evolution need a fourth man? Not Flair. I'm sure there are people that they could plug in and elevate. That would also keep HHH and Bryan away from each other and keep the match-ups fresh. They aren't really going to keep Orton and Batista as a tag-team, are they?

I am afraid, I have got some....alright enough of that gimmick post. I don't buy HHH moving away from Bryan. I expect Kane to face Bryan next week leaving the Extreme Rules main event open for HHH. I think Shield will face a gauntlet match leading to Batista/Orton. Raw was as good as it was going to get without Bryan. Poor Sandow.

Now reviewing Shield, Arrow and something called Winter Soldier.

I agree they need someone new, and since Triple H teams have to be cool heels, Barrett is right there. There's no way Batista is a heel when his movie comes out August 1, so we have at least that long before he turns face. He probably goes into the Aug. 17 Summerslam against heel Orton.

Not even Bray could salvage the segment with Cena and the photos. You can't come back from that. No one can come back from that.

Ziggler just breaks my heart every week. I'm glad he at least looked good in the loss. Barrett has the best music in the WWE. It sounds, actually, like three good themes smooshed into one.

Sandow and Barrett are just too similar for them both to be successful, and Sandow needs a gimmick change.

RVD looked like he killed ADR a few times. Albert Dead Rio. The turnbuckle yoink and the five-star face splash looked bad.

Why would Evolution need a fourth man? Especially if their beef is with the Shield right now? 3v3 is all nice and even steven.

Though I suppose if you wanted to have another "part-timer, old scoundrel" type in the role you could always grab Regal.

Mind you, I think right now the "4th man" is Steph.

You could argue it's Kane, and that makes a heel faction of long-established world champs. That in itself is a nice stable to fight new guys.

But this is a chance to elevate a new heel to the main event, and Bryan needs someone not in Triple H's cadre to defend his belt against. They had their chance at Mania.

I like the Wyatt's, but this Cena feud has been poorly executed. Are the Wyatt's supposed to represent evil? Are they trying to turn Cena to the dark side? Okay. But what have they really done that's evil? Beating him up and putting a mask on him is pretty tame.

In Cena's previous feud, Randy Orton beat up his Dad. Those are the actions of someone who is evil. That is what someone does if you're trying to get a 'good guy' to flip a switch and join the dark side. The Wyatt's just kind of talk. If they're going to be the alleged heel in this feud, then perhaps they should do something heel-ish.

I remember reading something at 411mania a couple of weeks ago that Kane may be getting close to retirement. If that's the case, I'm glad he looks to be going out with the mask.
