Well I applaud CBS for taking the bold chance at hiring a straight, white guy. It should be very different than everything else you see on television these days.
You can't always go PC especially for Late Night, Christ Leno made his bones on old white people. Colbert has a built in audience that will follow along with the built in Late Show audience. I think its a good move. Comedy Central is the real loser here.
Doesn't necessarily seem like a "safe" choice by CBS given that Colbert's success on TV has come as a character he won't be playing on the Late Show (according to Variety). He had a good, steady gig on CC and while I'll dearly miss the Report, perhaps Colbert felt there wasnt much left to accomplish with the show itself.

Well maybe, we can get Jessica Williams to replace Colbert. She's so new, but she does have a year to get ready. I suggest her primarily because she always kills on Daily Show. I can't think of another of their regulars who could fill that chair. That franchise will lose Oliver and Colbert in the same year. Man.
Colbert may be even more welcoming of Broadway performers than Dave, and he can join in a few numbers. It might be blasphemy, but I hope he keeps Paul and the orchestra.

Maybe I'm looking for things which aren't there, but it's felt like Colbert has played his character less - maybe just segments where it felt like they forgot to put in the parody segments, or moments where he's just been a normal funny person on TV and less someone doing a character. Like the segment a few weeks ago of him mocking ABC's new Social Media room which ended with him jumping into a pool of balls - that wasn't that much different than what Stewart does a half hour earlier (if Stewart ever left his desk.) I think Colbert will be funny, and I don't think this will be that hard of a transition from his current bit.
Curious what happens to that Comedy Central half hour now. If this all had happened six months earlier, that's obviously John Oliver's show. (I wish it was, since I don't pay for HBO.)

I agree with all of this.
I also wonder how much Colbert's "character" hurts him now. Will all the Republicans his character has been lampooning all these years let bygones be bygones and support his new show?

They can't hate him more than they did Letterman. I wonder how quickly he regrets taking the job.

Regardless of how much those guys slam the liberal or mainstream media, they hop on those talk-show couches if it means reaching an audience outside of FOX. Especially if they're selling books. O'Reilly, for instance, is regularly on Stewart's show.

This makes me sad in the same way college graduation is sad. All your friends are moving on to bigger and better things and you won't see them again, but its good for everyone.
I'm expecting he'll drop the satire and just run a normal talk show as himself for once (or a character much closer to himself). That's a shame, because the Colbert Report has been utterly brilliant the last few years, especially everything with the Colbert Super-PAC and Trevor Potter.
I can't imagine Oliver's too upset. He got that sweet, sweet HBO money and he only has to work once per week.
I don't know if Williams is ready for her own show (then again, I probably would have said the same thing about Oliver before he filled in for Stewart.) I'm guessing they won't move @midnight since the name is the time-slot. I'd like to see W. Kamau Bell get another chance. Bringing him into the Comedy Central late-night fold would have to be better than letting him struggle for an audience on FXX.

I agree and he has a fair number of Republicans and conservatives on his show. And really, the satire would fit in well, maybe not as his character, and since he (and Stewart) have satirized and mocked both sides it should be fine.
Since they've started airing the Daily Show and the Report here a few years ago I've slowly become a fan of both. One thing that always amuses me is how much I love Stewart as an interviewer-he comes across knowledgable and seems to read up- and totally opposite of that, how much I love Colbert as a parody of a politician who does not take any interview serious. It'd be interesting to see how he will do when it cannot be all about him or the right-wing views. I think over the past year I've seen him do it only once or twice. Not saying he cannot do it but it'll be interesting to see.
And, what might be fun to watch, is how he's going to go out with the Report. I can see him starting to act like he's too big for the show soon. That'd be fun.

Agreed. Same goes for O'Reilly always going on Letterman's show.
I'm just wondering if Republican viewers will give him a chance on his new show. But like edoug already mentioned, Letterman took alot of shots at Republicans over the years too and his show is still pretty popular. Either way, should be interesting.
Also, it is just me, or does every late night band pale in comparison to The Roots? It's almost not even fair to compare them, really.
Originally posted by TheOldManWhoever they do get will almost certainly be as unknown to me as Conan was when they announced him replacing Letterman on "The Late Show" as a writer from "The Simpsons" (IIRC). I'll guess the person of choice will be young enough to have a 25-year run if they catch on, and will be proficient with unconventional media to build a following/audience. Hopefully they will go outside the box to find the new host.
Stephen who??
Not buyin' it? Yeah, don't blame you.
But that this deal is announced what, a week after Letterman announced he was stepping down - I think this has been in the works a bit longer than a week, and we're now seeing a carefully planned face-saving exercise all around.
That said, Colbert's probably as good a 'get' for CBS as could realistically be got.
