it crashed as I realized that the WWE spent a whole week hyping a fucking guy who isn't fucking working for them.

The first time they mentioned Punk was about 5 minutes before RAW started. They spent the week hyping Daniel Bryan, Batista, John Cena, and others.

Let them spend money expecting him to be there

Tickets were pretty much sold out - Chicago usually does very well, and has since long before Punk. WWE may have goosed the rating by teasing CM Punk being there, but one high rating isn't going to mean much.

Snowed under in this thread is the awesomeness that is the Shield vs Wyatt match.

Air Harper was insane, as been mentioned, but all men went out of their way to put on a great match.
Rollins clearing the ring in the early stages, showing his amazing quickness and skills. Ambrose once again acting like a madman that rivals Bray. Reigns actually trying to keep him in check. All this awesomeness made the Wyatt's nothing but bystanders. Until Harper went wild of course. Even Rowan has grown on me and is now capable of handling himself in the ring.
And then..wow...Rollins is the one to walk away! This just added another layer of story telling.
He walks out, telling them he's sick of being the glue, only for Dean/Roman to work together like never before (the teaming up on that apron kick was awesome)
And I wasn't sure if I truely expected Rollins to break up the pin at the end, but when he didn't I did mutter 'oh...'

Yes, they're breaking up after 18 months of goodness and sure you can say there's still gas in the Shield tank.
But daaaamn-they ARE going out of their way to make all three of these guys mean something in this story. There's no innocent bystander, nobody getting forgotten.
(I'm sure at some point someone will go to jobberville and be forgotten but this story of the slooow-split is being done well)

Sheamus-Christian was a solid match. Nothing new but that doesn't make it less fun.
The Uso's winning was nice. I can't believe they actually hadn't won the titles until now.

The crowd is ready for a Cesaro face turn.
The Authority- wow, did we just cross into 'is this real or not' land. That was fun to watch and listen to.
HHH's opinions, Bryan's retorts about listening to the people. Fun!

Oh..and Cena...blaaaaah.

I was firmly in the "Bryan is definitely beating HHH" camp, but now I've got the idea put in my head that Bryan could lose to HHH because they might think they can give him the title at WrestlemaniRaw the next night and make it ok.

But that's just me. I haven't read anything remotely suggesting that. And at the end of the day, I still think Bryan's winning.

I think making the whole "if he wins he's in the title match", and then putting Bryan over by DQ (H organises an ambush, ref sees it, DQs H, H goes crazy and beats Bryan half to death) is absolutely something they'd do. A handy one-night story: Bryan gets past H, gets beat down, will he make the title match?, yes he will, here he is limping out, oh he wins against all odds, hooray! And H doesn't have to do the job.

Here's how amazing Cesaro is. You will never see him botch a move. He can salvage anything with his brute strength. His recovering the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Big E was incredible. Also, the ending of the 2/3 falls match with Zayn, which I just had the pure pleasure of watching.

I've no real issue with him losing to Trips in a screwy fashion if he gets the belt that same night. Truthfully, I'm much more interested in if he wins the title at WM than if he beats HHH.

I like the idea that HHH tries to screw Bryan but it backfires. Kindof a rerun of Foley vs Big Show with the refferee stipulation at Mania XV.

This is how low we got to. That HHH beating Bryan is going to be ok if its screwy. Like that hasn't been the ending to every Bryan PPV since MitB and people want more. Regardless if he gets the belt or not, that is just stupid. This really sounds like a bunch of beaten fans praying for a good draft after hideous season.

lotjx, this is the least hysterical analogy you've ever made. I think that's a perfectly apt comparison. But when your local team has a bad season, makes poor trades/coaching decisions/etc, you don't completely turn your back or stop supporting the team altogether. What I don't understand is why you and, apparently, Cerebus, think hyperbolic rage is more reasonable than loving your hometown team even though it often sucks.

Thank you, I think. You see there is a bunch of different ways I can explain it like this. My team is wrestling not the WWE. I love wrestling. I loved watching WWF, NWA, ECW and even TNA. I sometimes go to an independent wrestling show once in a blue moon. While many people view the WWE has their team, I don't. They are however the company of my youth til probably about a few years ago. Actually everyone's team should be the WWE, but the reality is what is left of wrestling fans are mostly WWE loyalist.

I think what Cerebus and myself are railing against is the giant blind spot that people have for the WWE. Wrestling is the Yankees or pick a team and a star player that has embarrassed or wrecked a team for years. WWE has been bad for years. There have been some good plays and maybe even a good spell for a month or so, but primarily its been deteriorating for awhile. At one point, they were stars and nothing they did was wrong, constantly hitting home runs out of the ballpark, everyone wore their jersey and so on.
Now, people are just hoping they bat .250 and have 20 home runs instead of 50.

It is every right for every fan to boo a player that is underachieving. No one hear can tell me this company is not underachieving. They have all the talent in North America and can easily access the rest of the world if they want. Yet, they go back to the same old swings even if everyone has scouted it out. That is what the WWE is a broke down old player that is hanging on, because its fans refuse to let it retire or allow for new talent to take its place. That is what we are dealing with it and fans giving it a constant pass is plain silly at this moment. They need to make changes and now, because the sponsors are leaving and its big money gamble might not be a shoe in as they thought.

The problem is you are so busy complaining about what you are not getting you totally fail to see what you are getting which is the best in ring matches this company has ever churned out on a nightly basis.

It sucks how they have handled Bryan, but if the trade off is handpicked insider favorites hoarding the title picture and a killer rest of the card, well I'll take that every day. I've watched far too much terrible in ring action to care as much as you do about the politics of it all.

I like Dannul Brine and all, but my enjoyment of the product does not at all depend on him having a title shot at Mania. I'm not sure why it's such a huge sticking point for many of you guys. He's great, he's over, he "deserves" it, yes...but man, just look at the Wyatts, the Shield, NXT...there's a lot to love about current WWE.

If the WWE is trying to make a statement about the face of the company -- besides Cena, of course -- then we have the choice of the two men scheduled for the title match.

We're supposed to dislike Orton by association with Hunter, his inability to cleanly defend the title, and his possession of the belt as a result of cashing in the MITB after Hunter pedigreed Bryan immediately after he beat Cena. He's a smug, undeserving champ, and he's playing that great. Then there's Batista whose ringwork and lungs have suffered from disuse. Now he's a heelish bully mowing through the people the universe would rather cheer.

That's our range of choices for "face" of the company in the presumed main event of the biggest show of the year. Odds are that match won't be a burner of barns or a knocker of slobbers. It doesn't have to go last, of course; Cena could get his main event against the Wyatts, and I don't see Lesnar getting that spot unless he were to beat Taker, and that's not happening.

Reigns and Cesaro aren't in singles pushes yet, Sheamus is fighting Christian, and Punk is gone. Who else is there to get amped about in the upper card? Bryan has the momentum of the beard and the chant and the underdog role and the moveset, and, honest to God, there's NO ONE ELSE. Everyone is mired in the midcard or below.

Let's say you're in-story Hunter, and you have to start thinking about the title picture after Mania. It's gotta be Cena/Batista, right? Because what else is there?

Yes, of course the in-ring work is great. They have their pick of the best wrestlers in the world. Expect where Batista is concerned. They are not rewarding those guys, some of them may not be on the main show.

That is not the case, I am making. The case is they don't know how to use them correctly and have been for a long time. Wyatt/Shield should be happening at Mania not a random Raw when they are terrified of the crowd. Cena/Wyatt is not going to main event Wrestlemania, we all know how that story is going to end with Cena on top. Bryan/Orton was a no-brainer or even Bryan/Punk, yet WWE struck out in the fall like they always do and signed free agent, Batista, who is stinking up the joint. I think Matt is correct, Cena/Batista is gong to happen since Extreme Rules is in NJ and not Seattle, I expect it to happen there or sometime this summer as a main event and probably for the title.

If I'm making analogies, WWE is a perennial playoff team with a lot of all-stars but (ironically) not enough championships and a history of blowing important games they were favored in.

I would lay good odds that Bryan vs. Batista and Cena vs. Wyatts Continued are your top post-Mania feuds. Daniel Bryan isn't going anywhere but the top of the charts, daddio.

Whilst I wish not to wee on the lollipops of fun we are all having by making analogies with sports teams (and a fine analogy you have made here), I have always thought of WWE as more of A TV Show. On this basis, I treat it like all other TV shows. I watch it if it brings me enjoyment and stop watching it if it doesn't bring me enjoyment.

What I've never been able to fathom is the sort of people who feel compelled to watch something that brings them sorrow or, worse, watch the thing that brings them sorrow and then tell other people that *they* are idiots for deriving enjoyment from the same show.

If two people watch a show regularly and of their own free will and Person A derives pleasure from the show whilst Person B does not, then it does not matter what the show in question is. Person B is the idiot.

Any time.

Every time.

And especially when when they display the grammar and spelling skills of an inebriated chimp.

Well, I think it's slightly less black and white than that. Person A is blind and is incapable of finding fault with anything. Person B is masochistic and is incapable of finding enjoyment with anything. Persons A and B stupidly attack opposing views. Then there's Person C...

I think your TV Show analogy is apt, but the more apt comparison, at least to the current WWE product, is Serial TV Show. For the five-year stretch when the main story was Cena fighting off the challenger of the week/month, WWE was more like a procedural show. You could jump off when you didn't like it, then jump back on in six months and not miss anything. For the past year, WWE has been more serial, with a large, overarching story and where each episode builds on the previous and towards an ultimate payoff. Similar to serials like Lost and How I Met Your Mother, it has a passionate fanbase that is both emotionally and intellectually engaged...but not just engaged, but committed.

Passionate fans of Lost, HIMYM and current WWE had/have expectations for emotionally and intellectually satisfying payoffs. You don't have to enjoy every step along the journey, but the destination should be satisfying. There are people who, to this day, feel they wasted six years of their lives watching Lost. That's pretty extreme, but the thing is, if you were a "good fan" of Lost for six seasons, and hated the ending, what can you do? You can't stop watching, because the show is done. As a fan, you "lost". The HIMYM fanbase (myself included) should be interesting to watch four weeks from now.

WWE never ends. So if the payoff to this Daniel Bryan saga isn't satisfying to you, you could walk away. But my only point is, folks are allowed to be skeptical of the payoff while being committed to the story. That's Person C.
