I caught the first episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers. I was impressed.

He had a cold opening with Thank You Notes stolen from Fallon to Fallon which was clever.

The set was generic – nothing stood out as great or awful except his desk seemed very small.

The 8G band was good. They have a good Late Night sound. There no Roots, but they sounded good. Fred Armisen as the leader will be interesting since he has other projects going on.

Meyers monologue was strong, but it was more like Weekend Update than a monologue. As someone who loves Weekend Update, I had no problem with this. I assume this will turn more into a monologue Meyers gets more comfortable.

When he got to the desk, he told a very funny story about changing a tire and told it well. I found myself waiting on every word as the story went on. He appears to be a strong story teller which bodes well for him.

Late Night Venn Diagrams was good but I believe they stole this bit from Demetri Martin. And Demetri Martin did it better. But it was funny.

Next up was a bit on the Olympics. It was good – especially Costas Vision. The skating announcers doing a basketball game and a MMA fight was good – felt it could have been better but the premise was funny.

Amy Poehler was the first guest which was a smart move since their chemistry is so strong. A solid and easy interview. Poehler is awesome.

The next interview was Vice President Joe Biden, and it was another good choice and a solid interview that let Biden loosen up some and have some fun. And Biden being on Parks and Recreation made it even easier with Peohler staying on for the interview.

I did notice he had a lot of picture props – for the tire story and for both Poehler and Biden. Again, I do not have a problem with that as long as he does not use it as a crutch.

A Great Big World was the musical guest. I like the version of Say Something they did here over what is played every minute on the radio.

He finished up with thanking everyone and his first show is in the books. Congratulations Seth. You made it.

In the end, Meyers looked very comfortable and it did not seem like his first show. He seemed much, much more comfortable in his first show than Fallon did in his first Tonight Show. I am really looking forward to watching him grow into this show.

Oh and Kanye West and Russell Wilson as guests tomorrow? I’ll be there.

My one take is that I hope he learns to speak more naturally because he basically SHOUTED THE ENTIRE MONOLOGUE.

I still think of "Late Night" in the Letterman/O'Brien vein - this wasn't really that. I don't know if that's good or bad, but I will probably stick with Craig Ferguson (unless he's in reruns) as he performs a much, much better monologue (and I suspect will prove out as a better interviewer).

He's been SHOUTING jokes for years on Update. Don't know why he wasn't called out more on it.

I agree with all on the shouting, but it is his first monologue and I do think he will settle down and get into a good rhythm.

I grew up with Letterman, loved Conan and grew to appreciate and enjoy Fallon. I already like Meyers more than Fallon so I will continue to watch and hopefully enjoy.

(Finally got around to typing this)

First off, I want to make it clear that my wife and I are huge Seth Meyers fan. Loved him on SNL. We've seen his stand-up show and we were super disappointed when he didn't get the morning show with Kelly Ripa.

Saying that, we were really disappointed with his debut.

Didn't like the stage set at all. It looked cheap or like it wasn't finished being built yet. I guess I can easily get used to the smaller desk that seems to be in the middle of the stage rather than further back against the wall. And even the guests chair looked cheap, small and not that comfortable to sit in.

Seth does the monologue exactly like he delivers the news on Weekend Update. Wife and I have no problem with that.

Super disappointed with the monologue. Only laughed once (the brassiere joke). His very first show and that was the best monologue they could come up with?

The Venn Diagrams was maybe a little bit better but only made us laugh about 3 times.

The Costas Vision was only funny if you laugh at Elementary school humor.

Seth telling the story about his flat tire was ok. Not bad but nothing great or really that funny. Just seemed like something that could have been told on the second or third show in.

Throughout a lot of the monologue, the Venn Diagrams and Costas Vision, the audience was just giving out very light polite applause. There were moments in the show that were almost uncomfortable to watch as even Seth realized the jokes weren't going great and he seemed to be squirming a little bit.

The banter with Fred was ok.

Then Amy Poehler came out and really picked up the show and did her best to carry it on her shoulders. They should have every guest come out hating Fred. The interview with Amy started out really strong and funny, but seemed to peter out a bit at the end.

The Joe Biden segment was ok and went probably as good as a Joe Biden interview could go. Again, not bad but nothing great or really good.

After that, the wife and I went to bed.

Were Seth fans so we'll continue to watch his show.

I liked show 2 and thought his interview with Kanye went well, especially since you have no idea which Kanye you will get.

And my love of female drummers grows stronger each time I see Kim Thompson.

To those who did not like first show(s), I know Conan and Fallon took time to grow into their roles. Also, I am sure Ferguson, although I have never seen him, needed time too.

Meyers will be fine. I look forward to watching his show each night.

Better monologue:

Seth Myers...

...or Byron Allen?

Definitely seemed like he had a much more livelier crowd for his second show than he did his first.

The past two years were 100% "Best of Soul Train" episodes - all with Don hosting (I don't think they ever got too deep into the 1980s with their reruns) and they were all AWEEEESOOOOOME. Especially the one with GINO VANELLI.
