Smackdown tonight had a nice and simple main event that didn't need much buildup, with Randy Orton facing (don't call him Antonio) Cesaro. It was a quality match, as would be expected given the participants. There were eighteen rotations on the giant swing. Cesaro countered the RKO with a European uppercut, followed by the flapjack launch into the Shoryuken, though it only got a two count. Orton cut Cesaro off, ramming his head into the ringpost, then going for a superplex, but Cesaro blocked it, delivered a sunset flip powerbomb off the top rope, followed it up with a 360 degree European uppercut, and then hit the Neutralizer for the clean pinfall win.

Wait, what?

In other matches, the show opened with a six man tag between Daniel Bryan, Sheamus and Christian against the Shield. After Sheamus accidentally Brogue kicked Christian, Ambrose was able to pin Christian for the win. No post-match Wyatt promo, or indeed any Wyatts at all on the show tonight. In a Fatal Four-Way match to determine the #1 Contender for the Intercontinental Championship, Jack Swagger defeated Kofi Kingston, Mark Henry and Rey Mysterio, making Kingston tap out to the Patriot Lock. A highlight of that match was the double german suplex by Swagger on Kofi on Mysterio. The Usos teamed with the Rhodes Brothers to face Rybaxel and the New Age Outlaws, and the Usos got the pin with a top rope splash on Road Dogg. Darren Young beat Damien Sandow via rollup, then got beaten down by guest commentator Titus O'Neil afterwards. The Miz beat Fandango via Skull-Crushing Finale off a distraction by Santino and Emma. This match was particularly sloppy in places that even Smackdown editing couldn't fix.

Throughout the show were Valentine's Day promos by various divas, and the Great Khali, just because. AJ decried the materialistic nature of Valentine's Day in hers, of course. And finally, so no one panics, Bad News Barrett was not killed by Jerry Lawler, he made his return with a new personalized podium, where his bad news was that women throughout America would gain a lot of weight gorging themselves on Valentine's chocolate.

But yeah. Cesaro won a match. Is he being bumped up to fill in a Punk-shaped hole in the roster?

Cesaro broke out so many variations of the European Uppercut a.k.a Swissryuken. Multiple corner ones, running ones, Shin Swissryuken, and finished with a debut Rolling Swissryuken.

They better all be in the next wrestling videogame, get on it 2k!

This was basically a three-match show, and I am not complaining. The opening was a terrific variation on the SHIELD vs. Daniel Bryan+2 formula, and the four-way match really pulled out all the stops when I wasn't expecting very much from it. The main event, though - Cesaro got about the most decisive possible win over the champ. That discus uppercut into the Neutralizer was a fantastic finish. While I'm still not much of a fan of Randy as champion, this is the role I like him best in, having long matches with top talent twice a week.

If everyone beats Orton before the EC, and then he loses in the Chamber, what value does he have? It has to lead to a face turn, following the WWE's pattern of the losing streak.

Except Christian already lost, and we don't know what's going to happen with Sheamus on Monday. That would make three losses for Randy and two wins, which more or less just builds suspense for the Chamber.

Orton's in a tough spot here as a performer. If he starts to win over the audience through effort, he further skews the audience against Batista. This isn't a match that can generate the white-hot mixed crowd that Rock/Cena can, and, presumably, the unified title match has to main event Mania.

So let's say he wins against Sheamus and then wins the Chamber. That makes the title match at Wrestlamania with a champ who everyone dislikes by design against Batista, a challenger everyone boos out of spite because he got Bryan's spot.

I wish the Shield and the Wyatts' six-man training exhibitions would go on forever. The match on Main Event with the Family against Sin Cara and Los Matadores (a short-lived Hunico cartel from a few years ago) that was downright outstanding.

The timing in Miz vs. Fandango was embarrassing. :-/

This is the type of performance (and response) that gets noticed and should result in a push.

And he wrote this on Monday, mind. I'd say these were good instincts. It seems like Cesaro could turn very soon and be a hot rising babyface, but at the same time they have no main event heels beyond Orton and Wyatt, so maybe he should just keep doing what he's doing and swinging who he's swinging.

That might require a third party candidate. Right now I rank it third from the top, with Cena/Bray pushing it by virtue of having Cena, having Bray, and not having Batista and Randy. I wish them luck.

Hey, Big E joining us at ringside! What's up, Big E? Big E, what's it like holding the prestigious intercontinental championship? So Big E, who would you prefer to face at Elimination Chamber? Looks like it will be a tough title defense, Big E! BIG E, BIG E, BIG E, BIG E, BIG E

RIP Antonio

When did Vince decide that people couldn't remember more than one name? Come to think of it...what IS Vince's last name again?

Shouldn't it be the other way round and he has no FIRST name? On TV, it's always "Mr. McMahon." :)

(Edited, but crucial context remains.)

Exactly. I can't see the crowd supporting either Orton OR Batista at WrestleMania. Quite honestly, I fail to see Vince's logic in bringing Batista back at all, let alone giving him the main-event challenger's slot that *should* go to Bryan.

Therefore, if WWE has any sense at all, Orton jobs in the Chamber.

Orton/Cesaro was truly great, I recommend tracking it down for anyone who hasn't seen it. Orton worked overtime to get Cesaro over in a way that - removed from context - made Cesaro look fantastic without taking anything away from Orton. THIS is the Randy Orton: Secret Superworker of 2011 who I had started to fear was gone. Highlights were Orton's general wobbly selling of Cesaro's offense, Cesaro getting to escape the Hanging DDT and just that 1-2-3 ending sequence of sunset flip superpowerbomb -> discus European Uppercut -> Neutralizer that gave no "Well, he kinda won BUT..." out. Cesaro just found an opening and beat the champ down and ended in the ring triumphant with Orton crushed on the outside. I'll take that over dark match overseas "You like Cesaro? Guess what, I like Cesaro too!" cheerleading any day.

Now, about that context...I had assumed that Orton was going to lose the Raw matches (Bryan, Cena and Sheamus) and win the Smackdown matches (over the also-rans of Cesaro and Christian), so this was a genuine surprise, but the booking IS still weird to make Orton look so vulnerable. He hasn't looked dominating in any wins since winning the belt and is losing to damn near everyone who isn't dying AND has the Authority constantly telling everyone that he's worthless, so it's not like they need to add any intrigue of "Can Randy Orton be beaten?"

Given the loss to Cesaro, I now have to assume Orton beats Sheamus (probably not clean), which gives another hook to the Cesaro/Sheamus XXX opener we're collectively willing into existence. Plus, even though Vince apparently loathes Christian and started that rumor about Christian's fatal illness, I can't see them having Orton go 1-4 when 2-3 (with help over Sheamus) gives Randy and Christian at least a little dignity.

I know why they did it, by the way (Raw/Sheamus = important, Smackdown/Cesaro = less so), but they did themselves a disservice by slotting the Cesaro and Sheamus matches on the shows they did. Cesaro/Orton would have won over a Raw crowd on its own merits, while Sheamus/Orton seems to be the ultimate crowd-provoking match-up among top stars. Weird that Orton matches up great with everyone BUT Sheamus/Cena/Del Rio.

Re: Christian being in there, I'm curious why it's not Kofi, since he already has that (considerably less decisive and badass) win over Orton and would seemingly have a claim to one of the Cesaro/Christian spots. For pure Rube Goldberg-ian awesome spot-building, a Cesaro/Christian/Kofi/Orton/Bryan/Sixth Guy Who I Guess Has To Be Cena Chamber would be amazing, with Christian coming up with strange ways to use the Chamber and Pods, Kofi jumping off every surface, Cesaro uppercutting both of them in mid-air every time they do those things, Orton trying a Top Of The Pod Hanging DDT on Bryan, Bryan trying to do a dropkick/running knee into a pod and Cena...I don't know, pinning everyone.

Re: Cesaro's future, Cesaro vs. Batista is a match I really want to see for reasons I'm not even sure I can fully understand, but are at least partially tied to the delightful image of Batista's tiny legs in the Giant Swing. And Cesaro should get a year long IC reign after a bulldozer match vs. Big E and Cesaro vs. Reigns, Wyatt and Rollins all stand out as things I want to happen. Also, Ziggler should be written out of WWE by having Cesaro do Swiss Death on him in a Hell In A Cell match where Ziggler sells it by flying up and smashing through the top of the Cell.

Is Bray really at that super-high level with the front office already? He's got to be the biggest career turnaround since...Christ, I can't even think of one that compares.

I was a HUGE Triple H fan back in 1999 and 2000. Once Austin returned and HHH was the "mastermind" behind the hit and run, I got sick of him. Once he returned from his injury, I started hating him like everyone else for all the same reasons.
