It's almost tragic to see the next two months unfold before your eyes in an instant, fait accompli. Batista and Orton's match at Wrestlemania getting drowned out by Daniel Bryan chants is a given, but I wonder how many weeks into Dave's triumphant return it'll take fans to catch on ahead of time and identify him as their new obstacle. He's collateral damage but they'd have brought it on themselves.

If Bryan's kept out, it's just to avoid him taking over the match. I figure Big Show's getting his arm broken and they wouldn't re-enter Lesnar in the Rumble unless it was to shoot an angle with Batista, so if Bryan and Bray aren't in it, it's a pretty shallow field, just a two-man show with Punk making it to the end to get screwed by the auctoritee and then Batista winning. Who is there even for Batista to beat at the end, 'cause Del Rio doesn't cut it at all. Maybe it comes down to Batista and the Shield for their big split. Maybe Sheamus.

Or maybe they get the Daniel Bryan thing right for one of the great moments in recent history.

If the Authority stuff at the top (trying to replace Randy with returning hero Batista) wasn't conflicting with everything else

I CAN'T BELIEVE THE AUTHORITY DOESN'T BELIEVE IN RANDY ORTON RIGHT BEFORE A PPV TITLE MATCH, that has only happened before all six Randy Orton PPV title matches. They need to put out a patch or something because career mode is glitched.

For all practical purposes, WWE ended Rey Rey in August 2011 when they pretty please asked him to work for a couple weeks with a torn ACL and MCL so he could put over Del Rio in his hometown and he got hurt even worse. That was pretty much it for Rey as a real WWE contributor.

Notes from a live attendee... meaning if you saw giant "Y","E", and "S" letters in the background, I was the "Y."

I'm not sure how it came across on TV, and from all I've read it sounds like folks were underwhelmed - but the live crowd liked themselves some Batista at the beginning.

Nice, nice pops for Daniel Bryan. Let me confirm, however, that the Wyatts running out in the dark without their entrance music is awkward. And lame. And pretty carny-silly.

Hour three was crowd death. And the heat on Orton/Cena was abysmal.

What would be of most interest is in seeing who fills out these other spots for the Rumble. That will be telling, though from a surprises standpoint we've got to assume someone in the Bryan/Sheamus/Jericho realm is in.

I would be more than a little shocked if Ted DiBiase had been a better representative of Samoan wrestlers than the Usos.

Interesting you say that, because I remember thinking it was kind of sad that for like the first 15-20 seconds Batista was in the ring, all you could hear on the WWE mic was one sad, lonely guy starting a BUH-TEE-STUH chant. One guy for about 15-20 seconds before it finally picked up ... a little bit ... and then finally a little more. But man, that was a slow pick-up I thought.

No love for Big Show's tremendous Paul Heyman impression?

Has there been a more all-over-the-place character than Big Show? He goes from weepy crybaby, to jolly Baby New Year, to tough guy that intimdates Brock Lesnar. I can't keep up.

I would really like a Standard-bearing tag team for the next couple years. Like how the Dudleys were for ECW and most of WWE, or LOD, or Road Warriors for most ofthe 80's to 90's. I believe The Usos could fill that role where they are better together than apart. The tag team division really needs a dominant team that doesn't break out into a Midnight Rockers situation and become Tag Champs for a ridiculous amount of times over several years.

Usos and maybe one other tag team, preferably one with an opposing style and look to their's. Obviously the members of The Shield are too unique to stay together, same with the Rhodes brothers, Los Matadores are stupid, and Swagger is getting reaction by association with Cesaro and Zeb. Maybe PTP or Harper and Rowan without Bray in the future could be the second Tag Team Division standard bearers?

Basically I want The Usos to be The Hardy Boyz to ???'s Dudley Boyz.

IJ and I have been watching on the DVR and we are through Batista's powerbomb of Del Rio, so we're not quite to hour three. Here is IJ's running commentary of Batista's triumphant return:

"What's with those pants? Are those skinny jeans?"
"Why does he have sunglasses on?"
"Is that a jacket with no shirt? Who does that?"
"Is that a nose piercing? How old IS he?"

So yeah, not the most triumphant return ever for Batista. When he came out to powerbomb ADR it was "I hope he changed his clothes...nope!"

And can I just SHIT ALL OVER Michael Cole for one second? Rey Mysterio rolls under the bottom rope, pops up and does a springboard moonsault to ADR from the apron. Cole: "If Rey does that in the Rumble, he'd be eliminated." Uh, no, you dipshit, because, you see, he went UNDER THE BOTTOM ROPE. Pay fuckin' attention, please.

Roman Reigns' Superman Punch of Cody was so great that even IJ was like "that was pretty friggin' awesome."

EDIT: Also, kudos to IJ for saying "it would be hilarious if Kane told CM Punk he was #1 for the Royal Rumble now" five seconds before it happened. Also (also) I continue to enjoy her annoyance that WWE commentators refer to being #1 as some special thing while ignoring that #2 ALSO ENTERS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MATCH THEREFORE #1 and #2 ARE BASICALLY THE SAME.

Are they *really* stupid enough to tank their 30th anniversary big show AND their big Network launch by ignoring the most over guy on their roster in favour of HHH's buddy? A Network, it should be noted, that will be driven by subscriptions from the kind of hardcore fans that are chanting "Daniel Bryan" at every turn? Batista/Orton will BOMB at WrestleMania, and bomb hard. Goldberg/Lesnar type bombing. And if Batista wins the belt, he's going to be in for an even worse time come Raw the next night.

The fact that it seems like they would leave Bryan out of the Rumble because they KNOW he is so over that he'd ruin their handpicked winner's heat is mindboggling.

I presume that's why it wasn't a sitout powerbomb. Woulda been ugly.

Sadly, if the reports of Bryan's concussion are true, they may not have a choice in the matter as they're trying to minimize his physical activity.

There's less risk in a singles match than in a battle royal with bodies flying everywhere and the possibility of an accidental shot to the head. Ziggler was concussed a few weeks ago and he's just vanished into thin air.

The Network is sold just on getting Mania for free or getting six months for free. What is going to kill them is after the six months are up. A smart person would time their subscription in getting the Mania and SummerSlam at the same time then drop it til the Rumble.

As Mania as an event, Hulkamania and Taker's match will be enough to get people in the door or to make it "special" unless it also suffers from getting the YES out of the building.

To play Devil's Advocate, it could be a sign. I recall reading somewhere that WWE recognizes that returning superstars are going to tend to get a face pop just for the "welcome back" aspect of it. So the overall plan may be for him to be a heel -- and this the look he uses -- but he's reintroduced as a face just because that's what they do.

That said, his attack on Del Rio seems to counter that. Now that I think about it, it also might counter the general thinking that he was brought back to win the Rumble and headline WM. Perhaps that was a set-up for a feud that starts at the Rumble when ADR "illegally" eliminates The Animal?

I just hope that if only one part of Total Divas is true, it's their doctor evaluation before being declared healthy or not to wrestle:

"Yea"
"Everything feels better?"
"Yup"
"Ok then, you're good!"

It's probably wishful thinking but it just makes so much more sense for heel Batista to be the ultimate destination - him being "HHH's guy", the hug with the Authority, the awesomely ridiculous new look, the fact that he's being "unjustly" placed ahead of Daniel Bryan in the pecking order. It's only a matter of time before any attempt to make heel Orton vs face Batista the WrestleMania main event get drowned out by "Daniel Bryan" chants. I'd like to think they know that, but to think that they'll do anything other than stubbornly go ahead with Orton/Batista is probably giving them too much credit.

Bryan eliminating Batista in the Rumble to win it, thwarting the Authority's plans to groom Batista as the new "face of the company" and making Batista snap and go all Hollywood Dave in the process could be great. Bryan gets forced to defend his title shot in the Chamber and wins, Orton needs the Authority's help yet again to retain the title against Lesnar, forcing the Authority to lose all faith in Orton and force him to defend the belt against Batista the next night on RAW, using the Shield to make sure the belt finds its way onto their new chosen guy. Boom. Batista defends against Bryan at WrestleMania with Bryan doing the impossible, winning the belt in the main event, and giving Vince the huge WrestleMania "YES" chant that he apparently decided he wants, and it sets up Orton vs Reigns in a match where Reigns gets his breakout moment. Add to that, Undertaker vs Lesnar, HHH vs Punk, Cena/Hogan vs Bray Wyatt/Roddy Piper, Goldberg vs Ryback, Goldust vs Cody, Ambrose vs Big E to unify the IC/US titles, Usos vs Real Americans for the tag belts, AJ vs... I dunno, Tamina? for the Divas title, and that's a WrestleManis I'd pay to see.

Not that any of that'll happen...
