Maybe Abdul might have had a better showing if he had brought in Mantel.

I THINK they can only drop one guy at a time, so Wilson will be out next round. I may last 15 or 16 rounds - let's see if I can stay ahead of Wagner! (Ultimately, I'll be dropped and have 0 votes. Sad trombone.)

This means that 6 people ONLY ranked Wilson #1 (now "exhausted" ballots). 32 voters ranked someone else #2; their votes were added amongst the remaining 34 candidates.

(TRIVIA: Wilson finished last in 2009 as well, but there were only 11 candidates running that time.)

so what I've learned here is the answer to "why doesn't everyone do ranked voting" is "because it's so much slower and apparently less dramatic". Probably shouldn't make election choices on how TV news would handle it, but I believe they would all explode. Literally combust.

KARE 11 said tonight that the Minneapolis city council this afternoon changed the filing fee from $25 to $500. Gonna give it another go around next time?

It was $20, but I was never sure I'd run again even for that. I think we'll have to see how the next mayor does.

Interesting to see where my votes were distributed - although I'm sure Mr. Clark won't be sending me any bouquets, he SHOULD. Those 54 votes represent the largest transfer in any round to this point and largely suggest that the massive (~400) libertarian faction may have split the vote between us - when he's eliminated later, we'll need to check the additional "exhausted" count and see how many may have put me below him without picking one of the folks above both of us.

Also interesting to see 31 in the exhausted pile from me - either I was ranked #3, or the folks below me were already eliminated OR they undervoted.

There's a lot to learn here about a very very tiny portion of the population of this city!

It's a complicated way of electing a person but yeah. Because you get to vote 1st, second and third choice as they eliminate a person the second choices that voter made goes to people yet not eliminated, or the third choice if the second choice is eliminated or to exhausted if both are.

Complicated, but it's cold in Minneapolis in the winter so they have nothing better to do.

Press on.

by the way, Z, there wasn't a polling place at the airport, so I was denied in my quest to vote for you.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

I'll try to explain it for you, KJ:

In this round, Jaymie Kelly had the least number of votes: 252.

So she was eliminated.

We look at her 252 ballots:
Any that had her as the #3 choice are EXHAUSTED, as there are no more viable ranked choices on those ballots.

Any that had her as the #2 choice...
...along with no marked #3 choice are EXHAUSTED
...along with a #3 choice who has previously been eliminated are also EXHAUSTED
...along with a #3 choice who is one of the remaining candidates are transferred into the column of that particular candidate

Any that had her as the #1 choice...
...along with no marked #2 or #3 choices are EXHAUSTED.
...along with #2 and #3 choices of previously eliminated candidates are EXHAUSTED
...along with a #2 choice of a previously eliminated candidate AND a #3 choice of a remaining candidate is transferred to the column of the #3 choice candidate
...along with a #2 choice of one of the remaining candidates are transferred to the column of that candidate

Simple, right? (I'm EXHAUSTED)

Betsy Hodges getting 74 votes transferred from Kelly smashes my record 54 votes transferring to Clark and she's back to pulling away from Andrew again...although we're still not reallocating a whole lot of choices even at this stage of things. STAY TUNED TO THIS MESSAGE BOARD
