I thought the general consensus was Wolverine vs The Hulk?

What's that you say?

Winning is overrated if the storyline is good. Now, how they handle the storyline is a whole other story.

Also, in 2013, CM Punk has won exactly one pay per view match.

Royal Rumble: Lost WWE Title to The Rock
Elimination Chamber: Lost to The Rock
WrestleMania 29: Lost to Undertaker
Payback: Defeated Chris Jericho
Money in the Bank: Lost RAW Money in the Bank ladder match
Summerslam: Lost to Brock Lesnar.

Yet Punk still seems to be over somehow. People like Punk. Wins and losses aren't that important as much as when you win and how memorably.

Bryan won the match he had to win against Cena. No one who saw it will forget it. He won, he won clean, he won decisively.

The rest is a new (albeit same old) story.

Punk won the match he needed to win and also avoided the ADR cash in. From that point on Punk became a folk hero of the people. Bryan is now another 30 second champion. The definition of madness is doing the exact same thing over and over again while getting the same result. There is nothing in WWE's past five years that shows me they are not doing the same thing. Nexus. Punk. Ziggler. Ryder. And now Bryan. I am sure there is more. Yes, Punk was able to get clear by Survivor Series, but lets be honest, he never became the superstar he could have been. The Laurantis storyline is exactly the same thing as this. And it will end the same way with a returning Cena beats Orton for the title while Bryan beats the walking damage goods of a returning Chris Jericho or someone like that.

I love Tommy Dreamer, but he is not a major superstar. I would argue Sandman and Tazz were the most over faces in ECW than Tommy. He did win though and they handed to the worst possible choice in Justin Credible.

What a fantastic main event! One of the best Summerslam main events ever, and that's saying something. Up there with Bulldog/Bret and Bret/Owen. I have nothing to complain about, not even Orton's cash-in, because of how strongly they put D-Bryan over before they screwed him. He is a real main eventer now. He'll come back stronger than ever.

There is that. Unless it was laced with whatever Edge used on Angle's head.

Meltzer was pushing WWE planned to shoot the big angle for WrestleMania. People get lost on the road to WrestleMania all every year, but they did what they did tonight not to brush Bryan aside but because they believed they were setting up a bigger match down the road.

It's funny. We're apparently on a collision course that's been plotted out since July for a big Vince vs. HHH feud for control of the company and eventually a double turn where somehow Vince will be the guy we're rooting for. One of the planned main events for WM is Triple H, as a heel, against the guy Vince gets to save the company.

Their dream scenario is getting Steve Austin to do it, which is the same pipe dream they had for Orton and Wrestlemania 25. Some people think CM Punk will end up in the spot since one of his final goals is to headline Wrestlemania and Rock/Lesnar and Cena/Undertaker have been the other expected top matches -- which happens to leave Orton, Bryan, and a WWE title match unaccounted for. But it would be something if, as I think you were getting at, this whole thing went full circle and Vince ended up turning to Daniel Bryan.

It has been kind of delightful to watch you change trajectory from "they won't do Cena vs. Bryan" to "they won't let Bryan be a face in the match" to "they won't let Bryan beat Cena" to this. On the pulse.

People need to get past this idea that Punk and Bryan are IRL 1998 Steve Austins who are succeeding even though the company wants them to fail and keeps trying to stop them. WWE decided a long time ago that CM Punk was their second-biggest star. They gave him a year-long title reign because they think he's a big star. They put him in main events with their three part-time special attractions because they think he's a big star. He gets input in all his angles and interviews and "has a bunch of stroke right now" as Miz said on Colt Cabana's podcast because they think he's a big star. And they overhauled their face/heel depth chart this summer so he could carry one of the two touring groups as its lead face because they think he's a big star.

Ditto Daniel Bryan. They didn't have him go over Randy Orton, Sheamus, and JOHN CENA clean in the same month -- imagine typing that two months ago -- so they can somehow avoid using him as one of their top guys going forward.

I am sure Orton will, because well lets be far, there is no bigger main event dud in wrestling in the last ten years than Orton.

Well, I am wrong on a lot of things, but maybe just maybe I am right here. Also, HHH vs. Austin? How about Punk vs. Austin. Really ADR as the biggest dud? I think he is coming into his own. Legit lol at Matt's pic.

To me, the biggest problem is Bryan is going to get lost in the McMahon drama. I do think Punk could have been their biggest star in 2011 into now. I do believe that Punk and Bryan can be breakout Austin stars especially Punk. The reality WWE has wasted a lot of young talent in the last few years as well as giant angles. I don't see any change in that at all.

Well, y'all have sold me, and when the SummerSlam DVD comes out, I'll buy it.

TITLE CHANGE STATISTICS

WWE Championship
New Champion: Daniel Bryan
Previous Champion: John Cena (133 days; since 4/7/13)
2013 Title Changes: Third

This was Daniel Bryan's first reign as WWE Champion. He has previously held WWE's World Heavyweight Championship and the ROH World Championship once each, making him a three-time world heavyweight champion. Bryan has also been the Tag Team Champions (Kane was concurrently the Tag Team Champions) and United States Champion in WWE; thus, he only needs the Intercontinental Championship to win every current WWE title he's eligible for.

Daniel Bryan is the 44th different official WWE Champion.

Bryan is the second person ever to win both the WWE Championship and ROH World Championship; CM Punk was the first. Samoa Joe and Austin Aries are the two former ROH World Champions who've won the top prize in TNA.

Surprisingly for an annual event that started back in 1988, Bryan's title victory was only the sixth WWE Championship change at SummerSlam. Prior to 2011's Cena-to-Punk-to-Del Rio exchange ("OMG is that Kevin Nash? WTF, thought he was dead, LOL"), the title hadn't changed hands at SummerSlam since Brock Lesnar defeated The Rock for his first reign back in 2002.

Bryan's win ended John Cena's 11th WWE Title reign at 133 days; Cena won the belt at WrestleMania 29 by defeating The Rock. The length of Cena's just-concluded reign ties it for third in Cena's personal history with the belt. His third reign lasted 380 days; his first, 280; and his second, 133. He did a heck of a lot better than his previous reign, however: it lasted only two weeks.

WWE Championship
New Champion: Randy Orton
Previous Champion: Daniel Bryan (less than 1 day)
2013 Title Changes: Fourth

This is Randy Orton's seventh reign as WWE Champion; added to his three reigns as WWE's World Heavyweight Champion, he is a ten-time world heavyweight champion overall. Orton has also had one reign as Intercontinental Champion and one as World Tag Team Champion (with Edge), giving him a total of 12 titles in WWE.

Orton held the WWE Championship Money in the Bank Contract for 35 days before cashing it in, and became the 11th Money in the Bank winner to successfully cash in his contract for a world championship. (John Cena failed in his attempt; Damien Sandow hasn't cashed his in yet). The average time between winning the briefcase and cashing it in has been 86.7 days.

Orton obviously ended the reign of Daniel Bryan which started only minutes earlier. Something tells me that in this case, if Sheamus were around to once again poke fun at Bryan for a short title match, he'd get his head knocked clean off.

If you live anywhere near a Buffalo Wild Wings, I highly recommend viewing a WWE Pay-Per-View there. It is sooo much better than sitting in your living room.

Fans show up in their wrestling t-shirts, start loud chants, and generally get rowdy. If you go to the Rumble, they count down to every new entrant.

I'm surprised WWE and BWW don't market this more, but maybe they don't need to as there's always a crowd.

(disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Buffalo Wild Wings. Just have a lot of fun there.)

It seemed that we were getting away from huge factions centered around Angle or Jarrett, but after tonight there looks to be another huge one forming, very similar to the last "Angle Alliance" only with Booker T in it now.
