I'm not sure if anybody's got this or not, so here's a starter.

I'll have more later, but for now I'll say that all the things I hated about this show aren't enough to keep me from watching the entire season.

Also, nothing else is on at this hour (by which I mean "The Newsroom")

That about sums it up. I watched out of (morbid) curiosity and I realized probably my biggest exposure to these E! type of shows was the two Queen Of Jordan parodies on 30 Rock.

It kinda made me feel sorry for Cena. Nikki is pushing the marriage issue on him, oh, days before 1 of the biggest events of his professional career? Ahh staged drama...

No backstage cameras to catch the guys' reaction to their match getting cut at Mania?

But otherwise, yeahh, it's exactly what you're expected it to be...

I was just about to start this thread.

Name them. What did you hate? Because what surprised me was that it wasn't nearly as godawful as I thought it was going to be. Oh sure, it had the reality show manipulation, editing, commercial breaks to juice "tension" and "revelations", and everyone came off as some level of bitchy (except Brie, actually, she came off all right and I guess Jojo since she was mostly a non-factor.) But I really did expect, and dread, much much worse. The backstage stuff, manipulatively edited as it was, still was interesting because I find WWE backstage stuff inherently interesting.

I'll name what I hated: Natalya. Some of that was just how she was edited, but then again, she did say the things she said and I thought she came off horrendously. The show painted her as a whiner and complainer, bitter, always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Does she have a point in that she's the most talented in-ring performer in the Divas locker room? Sure. But they made her into a complainer. Or maybe she is really a complainer and the show just captured it and ran with it. Maybe that's why her last best push was the farting gimmick? Plus the whole thing with the blonde hair - as if she has a lock on being the only blonde woman in the company. Nattie Neidhart came off terribly to me. (Jim "The Anvil" got a cameo, though. That was cool.)

Nikki Bella is the top heel on the show, that's clear. Everything negative you can paint a woman to be she pretty much gleefully inhabits: jealous, petty, vindictive, egotistical - yet, all she really truly wants in life is for her perfect man, John Cena, to pop the question. (Cena is recently divorced - it may not even have been finalized as off the filming? - and is naturally not eager to leap into another marriage. He's John Cena, not Ric Flair.) Cena was pretty funny with his "I can't even talk to you with you lips and your boobs out there" line, whether or not that was him trying to be funny for the camera crew there for their intimate, private dinner. Brie on the other hand seems to be a part time heel and full time perfectly happy woman in her two-plus-year committed relationship to (Daniel) Bryan Danielson. Bryan was great: every time you saw him, he had a giant grin on his face.

I thought Trinity (Naomi) came off well overall, "married" to Ariane (Cameron) in the Funkadactyls. Trinity is engaged to Jon (Jey Uso) and is the level headed professional of her team. Ariane is a drama queen and I'm not entirely sure what she brings to the table besides being the other Funkadactyl who can dance. Brodus Clay apparently reamed Ariane out at their WrestleMania match dress rehearsal for some unspecified screw up the show did not depict, which set Ariane's goombah boyfriend Vincent off. The guy wanted to fight Brodus, completely not understanding pro wrestling locker room etiquette. Or maybe it was all for show for the cameras, who fucking knows?

Meanwhile, there are the other two "newbie" Divas no one had ever heard of before this show came into our lives: Eva Marie and Jojo. Eva Marie's storyline is about the company ordering her to go blonde and she instead rebelled rebelliously like the rebel she is and died her hair crayon red. And she got away with it, but with a stern "toe the line" order to go along with it. Otherwise, Nattie had to babysit these two noobs, while Brie and Nikki made a show of "hazing" them by making them get them champagne, not unlike when Wade Barrett asked Nikki's boyfriend to go get him a glass of water when they were in The Nexus. I believe it was Nikki who did have the zinger to the noobs: "You don't need to be taking pictures, nobody knows who you are."

All of this leads to WrestleMania and the untold story of why The Bellas and Team Rhodes Scholars (completely absent from the show, perhaps Damien wisely opted against signing the E! release forms?) vs. Tons of Funk and The Funkadactyls was cut from WrestleMania 29. The show made it seem like it was because the elderly African American seamstresses backstage were unable to sew the Funkadactyls' sequined bottoms up in time, but no, after manipulative commercial breaks, we learn it was simply because "the match before them" (Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar) went long.

This was a tragedy. No, I'm not being facetious, I remember being pissed because I did want to see that match.

And thus Total Divas ended in crushing disappointment for the Bellas and the Funkadactyls. But there's a whole season of redemption to go...

TOTAL DIVAS REVELATION: Up until the filming of episode one of Total Divas, it seems John Cena had never seen The Notebook.

I liked it. Well-produced like Tough Enough but with people we actually know (mostly) and without all that boring wrestling training. I thought all the pre-existing talent played their assigned gimmicks well. The Bellas' bitchy charisma translates better on this kind of show than it does as wrestling characters.

Sad Natalya is just her whole arc for the season and the only reason she's on the show. It must've been devastating for her to learn she wouldn't be working Wrestlemania days before the show after having no storyline going into it and no push for months. Man I wish they'd kept John Laurinaitis as EVP of Talent Relations just for this show -- that LPGA lady is not a superstar.

AJ and Kaitlyn's personalities might not suit this kind of show, but I wish Layla were on it, she'd probably be great.

Brie and Bryan seem so nice.

VINCENT.

I wish I was a Bella.

As promised, I watched it. It was better (being a relative term) than I expected. I only give it an 90% " blurgh / gak (The W)". My major dilemma is whether to call it "(Wannabe) Housewives of WWE" or "Keeping Up with the Bellas".

I see that it's a " Bunim / Murray Prodution (en.wikipedia.org)", which I didn't realise. For those who don't keep up on that sort of thing, that's the production company that does all the MTV franchises (including "Real World" from the very beginning, 20-some years ago; as well as all of its siblings).

The only part I *did* like was Nattie. She's the only adult among all the principals. She was the only one who seemed to have any genuine response to anything in the whole show. For the little bit that we see her work, she's *working*, as opposed to the other girls just pissing around in the gym. And she was gracious & professional -- what a concept.

Who's the woman that Nattie was working with at the NXT facility, with DeMott & her dad coaching?

Knowing that this is a major plot point, I question whether Cena & Bryan are even actually (really-really) "dating" the Bellas, or whether that's just all for show. And we've even introduced their mom to the cast!

I thought the name Jane Geddes (newsday.com) sounded familiar somehow. So I looked it up & find that she's a former pro golfer, who's suddenly a "Senior Vice President of Talent Relations & Development". I thought those positions were always wrestling industry people. Weird.

I don't buy one bit of the "we're making your costumes for you at the very last minute" bullshit. a) Are not the independent contractors responsible for their own wardrobe? b) It wasn't as though one of them had something rip at the last minute -- they were making it out to be that neither one of them had any wardrobe at all. Nice that Sandra got a bit of TV time, being calm in spite of the artificial drama.

Layla did have a brief guest appearance in this ep, at the end, consoling whichever Funkadactyl was on the floor, sobbing that their match had been cut. "In a couple more years I'm gonna be 30 -- am I still gonna be chasing Wrestlemania?" (Not even Layla could keep a straight face for that line.) Oh, yes -- every wrestler going to work at a bingo hall knows exactly the pathos of that moment. Blurgh-gak.

WWE has had multiple seamstresses on-hand for decades.

Here's the twitter for one of them, Terry Anderson: https://twitter.com/redheadedstitch and Julie Youngberg, who's been there since '89: https://twitter.com/AnJewelsBrand

I've been trying to figure out how to put into words how I felt watching this show, and I think the way I want to say it - and I hear myself saying it and it's just awful and everything I hate about other people when THEY say shit like this, but - it just seems like in 2013 the WWE and I differ on how far and which aspects of kayfabe should be protected, and they're going much farther than I am comfortable with. On the other hand, it would be really hard to have this show without blowing away kayfabe, but maybe don't have this show? You can tell that somebody has thought about this a LITTLE bit as they haven't pulled the curtain back enough to tell us how predetermined everything is...well, except for Nattie talking about how they had carefully laid out this match that was cancelled...shoot. (Pun...intended?)

The upcoming clips for the season sure make it seem like we're going to see a lot of matches taped for "Superstars" and somehow they're going to try a whole lot of "whoa, that wasn't in the script!" but...wait, what script? What? Are we going there? Why do we have to go there?

I just wonder if sacrificing kayfabe to the extent they did is worth it for...hey, what exactly IS the point of this show? Duh, money. But surely there's more to it than that? Are they trying to hook female viewers and use this show as a gateway to the wrestling shows? Are they just trying to get some exposure with an audience who will probably NEVER be interested in the wrestling shows?

I guess I'm wondering why they never said "Cameron" or "Naomi" a SINGLE time last night. I'm also wondering if they'll continue calling them that on the wrestling TV, and if so, how the intersecting audience will be able to enjoy that disconnect.

I'm also concerned that this MAY somehow change the wrestling shows, and not in a way that the core audience (or, more likely, just me) would like - does the Cena/Bryan match at SummerSlam now get the added "intrigue" of a Bella in each corner? I hope not, but I sure could see it happening.

Finally: "Nattie's Dad?" Geez, you just TOLD us he was Jim Neidhart, how about you have the graphic say "JIM NEIDHART (Nattie's Dad)" and assume the audience will be able to comprehened? I mean, I KNOW it's a reality audience, but...

Oh and I don't care about the new girls at all. Sorry!

I see what you're saying about kayfabe and I think it's interesting you're making that argument about protecting kayfabe. But at the same time, did Total Divas really blow away kayfabe anymore than the countless other projects over the years?

I mean, I'd say since 1998-1999 when The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling, Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows, Beyond The Mat documentaries came out, and Mick Foley's "Have a Nice Day" became a national bestseller kayfabe has been obliterated. And it goes on and on from there, with every wrestling biography and expose, Tough Enough, and the Academy Award nominated film The Wrestler, which almost had Mickey Rourke wrestling at WrestleMania. This has all exposed the business to the point where there's really nothing left to reveal about its inner workings. None of those over the course of a decade plus have really changed pro wrestling.

I don't think Total Divas will do any more or less damage than everything that's come before it.

There's also nothing wrong with trying to grow the audience and exposing WWE to the female demographic. More women now watch WWE than ever before (I don't have numbers to back that up but look around any arena where there's a WWE event. I still recall being a kid going to WWF shows in the 80s and 90s and there are simply way more women watching today).

The unfortunate thing is this show is coming along at probably the weakest point of WWE Divas in ten years. If this show had existed when WWE Divas were at their peak, with Trish Stratus, Lita, and their generation, or even during the Kelly Kelly, Maryse, Eve, Beth Phoenix, LayCool years, it would be infinitely more interesting. (Michelle McCool would be in the Nikki Bella spot - "Will Mark marry me?")

Ratings are in. (pwinsider.com) Total Divas is the most watched debut on E! since Married to Jonas in August 2012. So... I guess that means it's a hit?

I think the major difference here is the combination of (1) WWE logo on it and (2) TV. Anticipating your next question, "Tough Enough" never bothered me like this does. I think - I USED to think that WWE would be able to know where the line is and choose not to cross it.

Seeing everyone in the same dressing room when they're supposed to be on opposing sides of a match, it just....I WANT to believe.

The problem with "reality" is its presence makes it awfully tough to suspend reality. (Please retweet)

If they were booking the significant others, they probably would've handpicked bigger (and flashier) stars than Tyson Kidd, Jimmy Uso, and Justin Gabriel.

I don't know how I know this in the first place but it's kind of adorable. DB and BB have been together since that Bellas-love-Bryan angle at the end of 2011. Daniel asked for her phone number for "important work stuff" but used it to ask her out because he was charmed by her hippy ethos!!! <3 <3

Cena and Nikki pre-date that Bella Prom of late 2012.

I might care more about this show if this wasn't an incredibly weak division that the announcers have buried on numerous occasions. I am sure the show will be a nice springboard for ladies that hope to go onto something else, like The Bellas and for super Diva fans like John Orquiola who gets behind anything WWE Diva related, but for someone like me who has little interest in the Divas I would have liked to have seen them build the in ring product first and then showed us the behind the scenes stuff.

The Scotsman once said that the WWE could put their logo on aturd and he would buy it. This show might not be a turd, but it feels they just slapped a WWE logo on something that is less authentic than usual.

I would prefer if they redid Tough Enough with some actually indy wrestlers instead of people off the street. I also think Tough Enough getting axed for no reason is one of the reasons, we don't see Austin anymore. I'd give away the worthless Diva Division for Austin/Punk at Mania. Take them all even the hairdressers.

Based on the interview with the Bellas on Michelle Beadle's show that I saw, that sounds about right. They briefly talked about (paraphrasing) how that essentially Nikki is a b!tch in real life, and that Brie has to fake her way through it using her sister as an example. (I knew I always liked Brie more for a reason...)

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Was that Flair's daughter? I thought she was taller but if it's an NXT diva I can't think of it being anyone else.

I disagree on Nikki being the top heel, obviously it's the Eva Maria (I'd prefer Audrey Marie kthx). At least Nikki is actually known by wrestling fans and has some accomplishments under her belt (yes I count their work on NXT as an accomplishment). Eva is the fake-ass rebel who sure showed that LPGA lady whose boss (who sounded like an idiot when she said "We know what we're doing" when she basically just admitted Eva as a blonde would've been shit, which anyone idiot knew beforehand). Nikki is being very bitchy about Cena- I get that she wants to get married and doesn't want to be with some guy who won't marry her, especially when your twin may have wedding bells in their future, but when you date a recently-divorced dude you have expect them having some aversion to marriage. It's not like he divorced after they started dating FFS.

I think the truth on Nattie is between what John & Emma said. She was a bit whiny but she does have a point, I mean who'd want to babysit those cunts and the dick who thinks he could and should beat up Brodus Clay? I have to side with Questlove on this one. (I've always wanted to say that)

I know I should not watching this show, but I have the sneaking suspicion I'll be checking out at least another episode.

I like how they make it seem like the match that went too long was Punk vs Taker. HHH must be protected even on their shitty reality shows.

Some wrestlers you could say "I can take'm".

A 300+ pound man who used to bodyguard Snoop Dogg is not in that category.

Seems like an interesting show, maybe it will surface online somehow.
