The second episode of The Bridge aired last night, and I'm liking it a lot for what it is: lurid pulp behind the hot-button patina of border culture.

Diane Kruger plays an El Paso homicide detective with some sort of disorder. I'm guessing Asperger's. She's working with a Mexican detective played by Demián Bichir to figure out who left the bodies of two women (made to look like placed carefully on the official US/Mexico border. The show quickly expands to look at the drug war, gangland rules, and illegal border crossings.

There is a serial killer. There is a (possibly connected) international abduction. There is an Anton Chigur-wannabe figure crossing into Texas to find the missing woman. There is a hidden tunnel under a gigantic ranch owned by a recently dead rich American.

To pack all this in, each episode runs 90 minutes, and the show can take its time to let scenes blossom. I like the pace. I really like the casting. Everyone, especially Bichir, is on the same wavelength. He's gonna steal the show.

But Kruger's character is dangerously close to the now-cliche Magically Afflicted TV Character. Think House and Sherlock and Lie To Me and Perception and Numbers. Her relentless focus seem to keep her at a job where her personality and confusion at social niceties would be a gigantic detriment. She clobbers a new widower with her demeanor. She barrels through a one-night stand. She cannot fathom the relationship between spouses. Is this realistic? I don't know. I don't know that I've met someone with Asperger's. But as a denizen of the comic culture, I've met lots of people who behave like this.

The show is playing coy with whatever she has. They haven't labeled it, and her boss treats her like a robot child. It might be helpful to her ersatz partner if someone pulled him aside and explained the rules of interacting with her. And that might help the audience get a handle on her. Because the disorder (and I don't want to be offensive in how I describe this, but I'm guessing here) is not disclosed, and we don't know how to respond to her (is she confused? is she a jerk?), the show trips over itself to make her mysterious (What happened with her sister?) and sympathetic. And it gets her into a sports bra and masturbating within two episodes. Maybe they think that helps.

You wouldn't see this on network TV; this week's episode features a sixteen-year-old girl mounted by an adult man, and the language is randomly salty. Otherwise (or because or despite), this is an enjoyable show. I describe it as "Cormac McCarthy writing L&O: SVU." Lyle Lovett showed up this week, and he's fascinating to watch in any role. The Lovely Mrs. Tracker says it reminds her of Seven, so she's hooked. And we'll stick with it for now.

EDIT: Of course I screwed up the title. Can a mod fix that pleaseandImsorry?

Diane Kruger's character Sonya Cross is so weird. It's like she's an Android trying to figure out human behavior or Sil from the movie Species. "Why would your wife call you just to hear your voice? Such a waste of time." Or straight up "Want to have sex? Yes or no?" "Why are you in my office? We can't have sex right now."

Then Marco Ruiz' wife keeps asking about if Sonya is pretty and finally meets her and comments about how pretty she is. Also, she is pregnant even though Marco just had his tubes tied and can barely sit down after the procedure. Then he goes to the Widow's house (supposedly to have her sign off on a letter saying he didn't take money from her because Sonya reported it from Episode 1) and the first chance he gets, he sleeps with her? No wonder his wife was so paranoid.

He's shooting blanks! No paternity suits! No anchor babies! Not that I blame Charlotte because just look at that man. I look at him, and I get pregnant.

Sonya and kidnapper Steven Linder both have obvious antisocial disorders, but we're supposed to be charmed by hers and disturbed by his.

I can't stand Matthew Lillard's character (I've worked at alt-weeklies; I know that guy), but his acting is winning me over.

The show continues to develop everyone except the lead. She is a gimmick. Everyone else is a character. The actress is doing just fine with what she's being given, but that material and the short discussions over her when she's out of earshot leave her little to build on.

"She's weird, huh?"
"She's not so bad."
That's it. Every time.

The development of the Mexican underground (literally and figuratively) is well done, and Linder is becoming a fascinating guy. Still, it's so odd to hear his Jame Gumb delivery and then cut to the actor who played Gumb in Silence of the Lambs.

The last episode was hilarious.
"Are you not hungry?" "It's not very good."
and "Why do you keep looking at me?" as the son is gawking and smiling at her at the dinner table. It's like she is an alien who just came to Earth and don't have any manners or know why humans do things. Ruiz doesn't really justify why he slept with Charlotte... I mean, his wife is good looking! And he is a dumbass for dropping his wallet again right in front of her. But I am excited about the next episode. Was wondering what the purpose of the little girl who was shoplifting and went to Mexico to almost get kidnapped but she claims to have seen the killer's face unlike the Mexican girl who got immunity and had no real info.

It's trying to be the new Twin Peaks, almost. It's different, I'll give it that. I'll keep watching.

Well that was a rip off. 15 year old girl now says she don't remember how the killer looked like. UGh and she dies at the end so all we have is a extremely detailed sketch of eyes, way more detailed than I would imagine a sketch artist could draw based on a description from a 15 year old. Also find out that Marco had slept with someone else before, but that "was different." lol Charlotte gets her old boyfriend from Tampa to take control of the tunnel but he is scheming to do more drug dealing... too bad for him that his supplier is working for the Feds in a sting. He also stole Lyle Lovett's pen. Also found out Hank tried to kill Sonya's sister's murderer but only gave him permanent brain damage and no answers to why he did it.

Yeah, Lord of War didn't go over well with my Blockbuster customers, and it seems NO ONE liked The Weather Man. (I liked him in The Family Man, though.)
