PWInsider is reporting that Matt Osbourne aka Matt Bourne and of course, best known as Doink The Clown, passed away in Texas. He was found dead by his girlfriend just weeks before his 57th birthday.
Matt Bourne was off course the best Doink. I mainly knew him from his work as Doink. Heel Doink in 1992 was pretty fantastic, with the stump puller and the evil clown music.
For as much as the Doink gimmick gets for being a relic of its time, you could also make the argument that it was ahead of its time. A couple of tweaks and Doink was essentially the Joker, and Bourne did a great job of playing up Doink's crazy side.
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball

I think all the criticism you mention is aimed purely at the midget-sidekicked babyface Doink from the latter years. Original evil clown Doink is almost universally praised from what I've seen over the years, and still holds up to this day.

Had forgotten that Borne was part of a famous angle in Mid=South, the "gorilla suit" tag title match between DiBiase and Borne vs JYD and Mr Olympia (Jerry Stubbs).
Here are some more thoughts from a demented mind in Central Florida: Also, Borne wrestled some guy named Ricky Steamboat in the third match on some show from Madison Square Garden on March 31, 1985.
Condolences to his family and friends. Thanks for the memories.
Why yes, I am both a musician and a lawyer. Thanks for asking. :)
