This show had a tough act to follow after last week's episode of greatness. And while they did take a bit of a quality dip this week, there was still some great stuff on display here.

First thing's first, the Money in the Bank participants were announced. Thankfully, they had visual aids on the 'tron, because I had to put my TV on "mute" because of Stephanie McMahon. Your participants are CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Sheamus, Kane, Randy Orton, Christian, and Rob Van Dam. If it stays like that, it's in line to be one of the best MITB matches ever, just because of the sheer talent level. But that's only seven guys and, sure enough, Ryback is sniffing that last spot, which is the most logical thing they can do with him, after he came so close to winning the title a few weeks ago.

The Daniel Bryan push has begun in full force, with an opening match with Randy Orton getting stopped by Double DQ. That lame finish didn't hold up, as the McMahons and Triple H all bullied Vickie and Maddox (What is the point of even having them around anymore?) into booking a main event rematch, with stipulation determined by the WWE App. The fans choice Street Fight and it was a damn good one, with Bryan winning clean after a kendo stick-assisted NO! Lock. Great, great stuff! Orton offered the Hand of Friendship post-match and there's STILL no heel turn. This is either the slowest burn ever or they're not turning him.

Meanwhile, CM Punk and Paul Heyman confronted each other for one of the most powerful dueling promos of the year, playing up all the history between the two and with Heyman swearing up and down that he didn't send Brock after Punk. They also addressed why the logical Brock/Punk tag team never happened, because of their professional jealousy, which is great reasoning and a great way to play up a burgeoning feud. Punk buys the whole thing, while OUTSTANDINGLY pulling off how conflicted he is. This is some of the best acting I've ever seen from Punk and he just nailed this promo. Afterwards, Punk beat Darren Young (noticeably distracted throughout the match, in another nice touch) and got saved from a double-team beatdown by Curtis Axel. Punk and Axel team up next week to face the Prime Time Losers, much to Punk's chagrin.

John Cena and Mark Henry had separate promos, which were both fine.

Alberto Del Rio and Chris Jericho faced off in a SmackDown rematch, which just adds to the myriad of reasons not to watch that show anymore. Seriously, why bother to watch a match on SD, if they're just doing it again on Raw? That ended in a DQ after Ricardo bopped Jericho with the bucket. Dolph Ziggler made the save and then beat up Jericho, to pay him back for last Friday. We're clearly setting up a three-way for MITB, I'd imagine.

Sheamus teamed up with Christian to beat the poor Rhodes Scholars. I only bring this up, because a Dublin Street Fight has apparently been booked for Friday to "settle the score" between Sheamus and Sandow. WHAT "SCORE"? Sheamus has won EVERY SINGLE MATCH so far! The only one he lost was the handicap match last week and that was a freakin' handicap match! How is this feud still going?

Aside from the Sheamus/Scholars neverending inanity, this was another good episode of Raw. The winning streak is at 2. Let's hope they can keep it going.

Until next time!

Did you miss them setting up Ryback-Jericho at MITB? That seems to leave both of them out.

Yep. Jericho and Ryback, at the moment, are not in the MitB picture. Though historically, that picture is subject to change at least once before the actual ladder match takes place. I'm trying to think of who could make for a good surprise entrant for MitB, but I'm drawing a blank.

That was a ppv-quality match between Bryan and Orton. I enjoyed the action, and there were some nice, memorable spots - Orton stopping the Bryan suicide dive with a chair, Bryan outsmarting Orton and powerbombing him through the table, Orton's exploder through the table, their clear desperation with the kendo stick, and the squeaky clean finish. I was taken aback. I didn't think they'd do it, but more power to them. I expected Orton to pull Bryan into the RKO off that postmatch handshake, but nothing happened.

The McMahons, as usual, were a chore. But just like last week, there wasn't too much to sit through.

That I found the Big E - AJ reenactment of Kaitlyn's predicament from a couple of weeks ago perversely entertaining probably says more about me than the actual product.

The Punk/Heyman segment was all sorts of win, as was their post-Axel-save interaction.

I was afraid Cena was going to come out and undo last week's work with a typical jokey promo, but he didn't do that. Both he and Mark Henry brought the intensity, and that was perfectly done.

Also, what was that bizarre promo for The Call? The one with Halle Berry, Otunga, and Kane - was that a one-off or did I miss something there?

Slowly but surely getting hyped for the Wyatt Family. Even their music is creepy.

They've showed it before. I think it re-aired because The Call is coming out on DVD.

So the MITB PPV is....

* Cena vs. Henry
* Del Rio vs. Ziggler
* Usos vs. Rollins/Reigns
* Jericho vs. Ryback
* Punk vs. Bryan vs. Kane vs. Orton vs. Van Dam vs. Christian vs. Sheamus

This doesn't leave a ton of uppercard options for the other MITB match but let's see...Ambrose (gotta be the big favourite to win at this point), Rhodes, Sandow, Big Show, Barrett, Miz, Axel. Geez, that's all heels except for Miz, who barely counts. Maybe they should've put RVD in this bout to give it some star power, and create some hype that Van Dam could actually win the thing. Or, they could be completely awesome and have Wyatt debut at MITB and win the briefcase right away.

Whoever is writing RAW - and Payback - lately, roughly around the time Curtis Axel made his debut, has been doing a great job. Didn't they just fire one of the heads of the writing staff? Whoever's replacing that person should be kept around.

Although, one thing they seem to be overdoing is the "match that happens multiple times on RAW" bit that they also did with HHH and Axel. I love what they did with Bryan/Orton, but they really could have just booked the main event at the top of the show after doing it the last week or two on every show. I guess they needed something for Vicki and Maddox to do...

Should they even bother with a World Title MITB?

Cena/Henry is great so far. It helps when the threat to Cena's title can also talk, which was a big problem I had with the Ryback feud. I don't want Henry to actually beat Cena, but I do think this feud is going to make MITB worth watching.

Punk/Heyman was the exact right amount of story development and slow build they should be doing in all of their storylines. It's shades of the old "Hulk Hogan, I'm still your buddy even though I'm secretly plotting to turn on you" gold they used to give us. And, I think even just Punk's look gives Heyman enough reason not to "trust" him to justify turning on him down the road. What if Heyman was totally genuine tonight, but because of Punk's mistrust of him and Lesnar making Heyman choose, he has to go Lesnar because that's just business?

Actual character motivated reasons for doing things is what we're seeing a lot of lately, and I think that's what's making the shows better.

Everything about the Wyatt Family gimmick is fantastic, but especially their music (youtu.be). I'm really surprised that Wyatt got music that wasn't produced in-house.

When the quality inevitably drops off again for the fall doldrums, let's remember how happy we were over the summer. Daniel Bryan main evented Raw, made Randy Orton tap out, ended the show leading a YES! chant, and is probably going to win Money in the Bank and semi-main event SummerSlam.

The first MITB lineup is crazy loaded. The two matches looks to continue the unspoken post-brand extension MITB divide where the WWE title case is now for main eventers and the World title case is for rising stars. For the World lineup, it seems like there are way more pushed heels than pushed faces -- Ambrose (winner?), Cesaro, Axel, Barrett, Big E, Fandango if he's cleared, Rhodes, and Sandow. OTOH, Miz is pretty much the only babyface with Kofi out, and then it'd be up to some low-level guys like Truth/Gabriel/Sin Cara to fill out the match (and the flying). Evan Bourne's ready, isn't he?

edit: B.Bad already posted that exact same thing while I had the browser open. :(

Punk and Heyman. The hug. The face. Acting. <3

Ryback might be putting Jericho out for a bit after their match.

AJ and Big E are pretty great as the new LayCool. aka LangCool, aka A.Cool.

"David Kreizman," whose name is going to be the new "Chris Kreski" if this keeps up, and who tried to resign but agreed to stay through August to finish the plans he'd mapped out for the summer.

Supposedly, Rey's itching to come back, but having his first match be a seven-person ladder match seems...ill-advised. If he does come back for this, I could buy into him winning, given that this is his last run and given his ongoing rivalry with Del Rio.

There's also a good chance Big Show could work this match as a face. I really can't believe it's been over a month since he's done anything. Is he hitting the end of the road or is Creative really so incompetent that they can't find anything at all for this guy to do?

Big Bad is onto something with Wyatt making his debut here. Like Sin Cara and Sandow before him, the B-list MITB match is a great showcase for new guys.

Since Bryan's presumably winning the other match, I guess a heel is taking this one. I'm also leaning Ambrose, but I'm more concerned that the briefcase is getting cashed in at Summerslam or that same night, which could potentially give Dolph Ziggler the ignominious "honor" of having three World Title reigns with a grand total of 0 successful title defenses. It could also be his second title reign that ends in less than two hours! Egads!

There's still plenty of time before the PPV. I'm thinking Ryback destroys Jericho next week, paving the way for Vince to toss him into the A-list MITB match.

WWE Diva Kaitlyn aka "Man-at-Arms". I dig Langston because I know he has a great sense of humor. Those short sleeve shirts prove it.

This slow burn on the split of Heyman and Punk is fantastic. You've got the loner and paranoid CM Punk trying to trust the shadiest business dealer currently in the company and his only friend Paul Heyman. It's like seeing the fallout of Tyson and Don King without the rape and ear biting.

I totally expected Punk to yell "Swear to me!" in Christian Bale's Batman voice as he was grilling him Heyman.

I missed the first half hour to catch up on the Bob Benson Hour, but this was a damn good RAW. I'm happy with seeing this MITB lineup in person. And they finally got that Jericho/Mr. Back match that was rumored for 'Mania.

Mark Henry's promo was outstanding once again. It's not a good week for Men's Wearhouse...

Show is injured (so is Swagger, who could maybe come back by then too?) but yeah, they're way overloaded with midcard heels.

I would expect AJ vs. Kaitlyn at MITB to fill out the card. It is interesting that they seem to be running with Bryan into SummerSlam, but I do wonder if he will face Cena or they will pull the trigger on Henry or have Bryan win after the Cena/Henry match. I just hope they aren't stupid enough to turn Bryan heel, because that is not going to take. You can thank USA for more McMahon shenanigans. I swear they must never look at their ratings data since when Steph and Vince came back, it got a bad number.

Also out hurt.

And I don't understand this WE HAVE TO HAVE EVERY SINGLE WRESTLER ON THE ROSTER ON EVERY SINGLE SHOW OR ELSE THE WRITERS HAVE FAILED mentality. If Wrestler X isn't a priority right now, it's better that he sits at home rather than still being on TV, accomplishing nothing but getting stale and overexposed in the process. Or that they put him on TV every week as a job guy, and then wonder why nobody cares when they do try to push him (see: Kofi).

Plus, if you're on every show, there's nothing special about you being there. Why pay $59.95 for a Sheamus match on PPV when he'll be on free TV ten times this month?

I really hope that Bryan shaves the playoff beard when he finally wins the title.

Maddox facial hair is light enough to look gray and ages him in a weird manner. Also, he and Vickie are useless but she STILL manages to be get the crowd worked up. The audience was insane during the video game segment.

Instead of Lesnar-Punk, this seems to be setting up Punk-Axel. That would give the eventual Punk/Lesnar match a possible title to fight over.

Well, he hasn't exactly done nothing. He was on the we-don't-have-anything-for-these-guys-to-do Expert Panel analysing the Payback PPV.

I'm glad someone else caught Jericho calling Ryback "Mr. Back," but the logic for that match is full of wrestling wonkiness. Jericho nearly beats the World Champ on Smackdown, getting DQ'd from a dominant position due to Ziggler. He's so frustrated that he wipes out Dolph, a fellow babyface, after the match. Then, presumably, he asks for this rematch on Raw, wins it, and takes a big jump on the ladder to the title, so to say. Why would he give that up to face Ryback, unless their match has a number one contendership attached to it? In fact, Chris should come out next week and demand it. And you can still have the triple threat for the World Title at Summerslam.

Didn't see it mentioned, but I think last night may have started the beginning of the end for Rhodes Scholars ... anyone see how Cody shoved Sandow out of the way before eating a Brogue kick? I expect Friday's Dublin Street fight to be the end of the Sandow/Sheamus feud, so it kinda makes sense.

Was not able to watch - did they make it clear there would be still 2 MITB ladder matches, or is that an assumption based on what they've done before (when they were still nominally doing a brand split)?

Nothing was explicitly stated, but the announced match was called the "WWE Title Ladder Match," implying that there will also be a "World Heavyweight Title Ladder Match."

I thought the high points on this week's show were every bit as good as those on last week's show, it's just that we had more filler to contend with this week, and less surprises. Daniel Bryan really benefited from the match stoppage last week, I think, because in the intervening time we got two much better matches with more heat behind them, and using the match stoppage and the backstage whatever as part of the angle made it more compelling. I liked Cena's promo a lot; before he came out, I was thinking that Mr. "I love and respect this business so much" should have been absolutely furious over Mark Henry using a fake retirement to bait him, and lo and behold, we actually got a serious promo on those lines. Cena didn't laugh this guy off. Punk/Heyman was great, and I felt like Heyman made some great points, even if he is obviously lying and going to betray Punk in the coming weeks (I have seen wrestling before). And I'm not sure where Jericho/Ziggler is going, exactly, but I appreciate Jericho getting a receipt from Smackdown.

Edit: I forgot to mention something else that I really liked about Cena's promo, which is that it really sold the title as something with intrinsic value that wrestlers would want to possess, something that has been sorely missing from the product for years now.
