My only other thought, besides it possibly being legit, was that the WWE just ran two fake concussion angles, and wanted to do something that played up the "safe environment" aspect of the company. "Look, even though these men want to compete, we're too concerned for their safety to risk them."

Given that the website has posted a video of Bryan flipping out at HHH for stopping that match, I'd lean towards it being a work.

What a difference a week makes.

"And to my little girl Joanna -- No, not Mae Young. Dummy."

Mark f'ing Henry. Wow.

Kudos to Lesnar for speeding up the build to the F5. He tends to drag out his swerve attacks too long (Cena, Vince).

Let's get the bad out of the way first:

There was definitely a point in that second hour where it felt like they were undoing everything good from Payback all at once with the McMahon-related segments. Is the payoff for all these terrible McMahon segments that nobody wants and that help nobody the return of Linda that nobody wants and will help nobody? I like the at least potential implication that they're intentionally booking terrible things now just to give HHH stuff to complain about to sound cool. Props to Stephanie, though, for making HHH look like an amatuer with her power move of cutting off Kaitlyn and belittling the entire women's roster at once, undoing whatever that segment was supposed to have done.

Steph pulling the Police Squad! freeze frame with Vickie at the end of that garbage segment made my night. I assume it was a tribute to Christian's return or at least a nod that anyone stuck in an angle/scene with the McMahons is in a worst case scenario.

Well, I think we know why they do it, we just don't know why the McMahons/HHH think it's good for business.

Anyway, good stuff, because there was a lot of it and the stuff that was good was great.

I'll reserve judgment on the Bryan thing for now because I can't see it not being part of the story, but simultaneously can't see them running two and a half "guy is too injured to compete" angles at the same time. (Shout out to whoever shamed people in the back to phasing that over from HHH to Ziggler where it belonged.) It doesn't really matter, though, since I'm in for whatever Bryan does, and if a slight delay in Cena/Bryan leads to a bigger Cena/Bryan feud later where Bryan can win, or (ideally), Bryan/Lesnar, I'm all for it. Orton being all chummy at the end was a little weird, but I assume it was part of the "let's make it look real" aspect, and if they want to slowburn back into Orton as soulless serial killer working on behalf of his ancient snake god, I'm fine for that, especially if the end game is Serial Killer Randy Orton vs. vulnerable face Dolph Ziggler.

Something small that shouldn't be glossed over: Sandow intercepting Sheamus in mid-Brogue Kick with the roll-up for the win was a pretty nifty little spot that was handled well by everyone.

He looked very thin, which is probably healthy but, yeah, did stand out. Good return match, though, and great work by whichever cameraman actually got in position underneath him for the dive off the top to Barrett out of the ring. I don't remember seeing that kind of shot often.

Not sure what Christian does now, unless he gets involved with The Shield (somebody has to, right?) and tags with someone or works with Ambrose. Which would all be good. I think I'd rather see him work with Cesaro first, though. Cesaro needs someone to put him over and he's one of the few guys I'd have no problems with Christian putting over. Plus, Christian is small enough to take all of Cesaro's best moves, and a series of matches between the two of them would likely be a mousetrap-like series of counters into counters into counters into terrifying flying uppercuts, which is a thing that I would very much want to watch every week.

Punk/Lesnar is something I'm obviously way, way into. I do think they kept that weird trend going where they accidentally skip over the first act of major Punk angles (they did it with Jericho and with Undertaker), this time by not really getting into why Punk split from Heyman. I mean, they danced around it, but it felt like there's a small missing piece between they way Punk left and came back and what changed internally for him. That said, he made it moot with the small things like shrugging and smirking after taking the countout win from Del Rio that at least establishes that he's still an awesome jerk, just the awesome jerk we're allowed to like again.

I especially liked Punk's subtle shift from annoyance to trepidation upon hearing Brock's theme and then seeing him. Just that little touch of him selling the fact that he's at least slightly worried about what crazy-ass Brock Lesnar is going to do already has me sold on this, and I'm looking forward to Brock's transition from cackling monster to exploding nuclear stack once Punk starts to verbally go after him. This is the kind of thing they should have been using Brock to do.

Yeah, I don't have enough good things to say about how great that was. It wasn't even so much buying into it, since there wasn't any other reason for Cena to stay out, but about how it was executed. If someone wanted to make a case for that as greatest single non-match performance by someone on a wrestling show, I'd have a pretty hard time thinking of a ton of contenders that didn't involve an actual death or forced retirement, and as others have said, it was even ahead of most of those.

Highlights from Mark Henry's tour de force, some mentioned already, some not:
-Carrying the boots out
-Genuine tears on command throughout
-Making the perfectly corny little joke about "I figured even if you forgot me, you'd remember this jacket!"
-"Hearing 'One more match!' from one of the best crowds I've ever been in front of, you're gonna make me cry!" was great in the moment, even better as masterful trolling in retrospect
-The very subtle build throughout with Cena - talking about how he was a veteran when Cena showed up, about how Cena's title is the only one he never had, the little passive-agressive bit where he said something like "I mean, not as much success as you ha ha!" that could have played either way, giving the belt back to Cena saying you gotta earn it (and that was a perfect balance were they usually struggle with Cena: from Cena's point of view, giving an emotional guy the belt to pose with on his way out is a reasonable thing to do that could be construed as a nice gesture, but taking a step back, it's also massively condescending. Cena didn't do anything wrong there, but knowing Henry's motivation, that was the worst thing Cena could have done in the moment. So great.)
-Stopping to acknowledge the crowd with that "No, not Mae Young, dummy!" that got genuine laughs and really sold the whole thing
-"I'M COMING HOME, BABY!"
-"YOU THINK IT WOULD BE THAT EASY?!?! I GOT PLENTY LEFT IN THE TANK! THAT'S WHAT I DO!"

Seriously, that was just great television, and maybe the best simple, logical, earned kickoff to a feud in years. Mark Henry, World's Most Supporting Actor.

I think that was part of the fun -- that most people (or at least the so-called "smarks") saw it as a swerve from the get-go ... but as things went on it went from "come on, this is a swerve" to "hmm, well ..." to "Wow, I wonder if he really IS retiring" and finally with "No, he's not gonna retire? Is he? Really? No ... YES! I knew it!!"

Up until JBL said, "He's never held that belt.........", that's how I was, too.

Towring Steph was just ridiculous. I know AJ and k8tlyn are not the tall, but gzuz. Was the top of AJ's head even taller than Steph's boobs?

Speaking of them, K8tlyn. Mmmmmm.

Yeah, that was the big clue for me. They were pretty heavy-handed with it throughout the show, but Henry's great job rescued that. JBL's comment just seemed like the sort of throwaway line that was meant to mean something.

Has there ever been a time when WWE had less (!) good looking Divas than today? I only find AJ and The Bellas hot right now. When all those other so-called Divas stood on the ramp last night on RAW, to me, that felt more like Godfather's Ho Train had arrived than the glorious time of Sunny, Trish, Lita, Stacy and Torrie.

You lead a very blessed life if you are surrounded by enough women that you think the current ladies in the WWE aren't good looking.

Wow - confirmed. Bryan was supposed to win the match. No wonder Orton was so uncharacteristically sweet to him afterwards. Bryan's heated argument with Triple H about the stoppage was also legit, but they later apologized to each other (PWInsider). Daniel Bryan beating Randy Orton -- would it have been possible for this show to be any more well-received?

Really good show. Only negative that stood out was Stephanie. I'm not sure there's a less likeable "babyface" than Steph. First, she threatens AJ's job because she couldn't come up with an actual intelligent rebuttal to her points, then she buries all the divas. She really is Vince's daughter, having to put herself over everyone for no reason despite being an occasional character with no real impact on storylines.

Re: Mark Henry. Who, five years ago, would have thought Mark Henry would have had a well-received World Title run and delivered a promo that snowed even the most jaded of smarks? I'm right with you guys on the whole though it was a swerve, wasn't sure mid-way, loved the final execution thing.

Welcome back, Christian.

I'm interested but possibly skeptical about Punk/Brock. With the size difference and style clash, match may not be as good as we're all expecting. But I'm sure the ride will be excellent.

Lesnar / Eddie Guerrero was great, so I've got strong faith that Punk can bring the crowd into the feud and put together a strong, entertaining story come match time.
