This was easily the best Raw of the year so far. Yes, even better than the night after Wrestlemania. That show needed the crowd to make it better. THIS show brought the wrestling and writing A-game! (Well...except for the segments with the McMahons. Those were terrible.)

CM Punk has gone babyface again. The breakup with Heyman was teased more during the opening segment after Punk crashed a newly-heel Alberto Del Rio's victory promo. Punk faced Del Rio in a very good main event that ended by countout after Dolph Ziggler came out and rushed Del Rio on the ramp. THEN CAME THE PAIN! Brock Lesnar came out for a face-to-face with Punk. It looked like we'd get a Brock promo, but IT WAS A SWERVE and Brock killed Punk dead with the F5! Yes! Yes! A thousand times YES! Give me THIS feud! I am salivating for this one!

What else has me salivating? Mark Henry came out during John Cena's victory promo to seemingly retire. Cena saw Mark's hideous pink blazer and suspected that only a babyface would wear such a loud color, but THAT WAS ALSO A SWERVE and Henry killed Cena dead with the World's Strongest Slam! Yes! Yes! Another thousand times YES! Their match is now set for Money in the Bank and MARK HENRY IS FINALLY GOING TO MAIN EVENT! As well he should!

And then there was Daniel Bryan, who faced Randy Orton in a No DQ match, decided by the WWE App. That match ended in a lame stoppage, but everything about that match was aces right up until the stoppage. The push for Bryan looks to be in full swing, as Bryan kept trying to rush Orton, even as the doctors tried to stop him. Everything ended peacefully, however, so no Orton heel turn yet.

Also, Christian's back! He came back to beat Wade Barrett and it looks like he's ready for ONE...MORE...RUN!

And Zeb Colter has a new man, as it looks like Jack Swagger has fallen off the face of the earth. Zeb Colter's new client is...Antonio Cesaro, as they've officially switched Zeb's Tea Party angle into full-fledged Irony Mode. I can dig this.

On the strength of those segments, I submit that this is the Best Raw of 2013 to date! We're in for good times, folks!

Until next time!

I live in a world where Mark Henry is a more believable badass than Brock Lesnar....

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

Agreed this was the best Raw of the year. The Henry swerve was fantastic as was the start of the Lesnar-Punk feud.

I'm guessing Henry beats up Cena after their match at Money in the Bank leading to a Daniel Bryan cash-in, setting up their SummerSlam showdown.

They aren't really going to drag this McMahon nonsense out until WrestleMania 30 are they? As someone recently suggested, this looks like it's leading up to Triple H vs. Vince for control of the company.

Great RAW. I fully bought the Mark Henry retirement and was pumped to see the swerve and sam of Cena. This better lead to a long title run for Henry.

So Henry and Cena, Ziggler and Del Rio and pi k and Lesnar looked locked in. Perhaps even a Orton and Bryan rematch. I wonder where that leaves Jericho?

Life is hilariously cruel.

A great show indeed. I think Mark Henry's fake retirement might've been better than Shawn's real one. With all this cool stuff happening, I was thinking to myself, you know what would really put this over the top is constant McMahon stuff and constant replays of the McMahon stuff. Steph especially!

RVD and Christian (gasp), heavy reinforcements being called in for those MITB matches.

Daniel Bryan says he needs to win the WWE title? I agree.

I think this whole show counts as the June surprise.

Based on his schedule, I'd say touring with Fozzy this summer.

Yeah, we really aren't short on June Surprise candidates. You could feasibly go with:
-Punk turns babyface, gets destroyed by Brock
-Del Rio/Ziggler double turn
-Henry fake retires, turns on Cena
-RVD returns to WWE

And the month still isn't finished! By next week, you might be able to throw an Orton heel turn on there, too! There's no way we get as many August fizzles as June surprises!

I'm not sure who to thank, but the past 48 hours have shown me that I actually AM willing to endure an awful lot of McMahonery - and yes, emphasis on awful to the point where they didn't even bother to edit out the audible director towards the end of the final backstage - when the rest of the show is so GOOD.

Thank God for Mark Henry - he was so believable that the "dying to be a part of the show but we ain't Chicago" Grand Rapids crowd never thought to disbelieve and start WHAT'ing him out of the building. I'm not sure there are too many other folks who could have pulled it off - and if you don't believe me, let's take another replay of Kaitlyn's single tear from last night (and, to a lesser extent, Heyman's probably-not-meant-to-be-a-tear backstage)

The surprises were actually surprising - from RVD on Sunday (which, in retrospect, may not have been the best thing for the Chicago smarks) to the double turn of Ziggler and del Rio which I don't believe ANYBODY thought to speculate on last week, Punk's maybe-not-much-of-a-surprise turn and separation from Heyman, Christian's return, to the Ziggler return in the overrun almost IMMEDIATELY followed by a Brock Lesnar return - you almost started to have concerns that they were blowing several weeks' worth of crescendo in one night, but on the other hand, why the hell not?

The best part was that BEFORE the show, I was worried that all the turns may have been more "shuffling the chairs on the Titanic" than "reshuffling the deck" but by the time the show was over, I had tilted to the other direction and am actually looking forward to how a majority of these angles are going to play out.

So, the Daniel Bryan "stinger" - that was probably legit, right? I can't imagine they'd have actually scripted it that way...although, before this week I would have had trouble that a lot of the good stuff would have been scripted, either. It just didn't really seem to advance the angle in an obvious way the way all/most of the other angles seemed to advance. What bothered me more was the crowing about fifty thousand votes on the App - ostensibly there are somewhere between 1 and 4 million viewers of this show's live East Coast feed. Fifty thousand doesn't seem like a lot to get excited over! Plus...they seem to make the same amount of money no matter how many thousands of votes are cast, so it's a little baffling. We were at least spared cuts to people who were watching the show we weren't supposed to be watching because we were busy watching THEM on the APP. Anyway, if they DID have to wing it (and my "smoking gun" was Justin Roberts' "on the fly" sounding match result announcement but I only call it that because in my head, I'd have scripted it differently/better), we'll see if they can shoehorn any Orton developments into the match they've already announced for Smackdown.

Where IS Jack Swagger? Did I miss him getting injured or something?

Hell, where's David Otunga? "The Call" is coming out on Blu-ray combo! We need some Otunga!

For the life of me, though, I have no idea why they need to constantly show us how much taller Stephanie (in heels) is than the entire female roster, possibly barring Alicia. Also, her voice is getting into early-Chyna territory and it's not hot.

Last night's show was good, tonight's bordered on great. Can they POSSIBLY keep it going? I hope van Dam's stretching from now until MitB.

And to me, the biggest surprise of them all is still "WWE thinks Daniel Bryan is great."

They can easily have Big E remain a face by employing the "bro's before ho's" trope. They could even have him start actually siding with Kaitlyn.

Or, to steal an idea from Dr. Unlikely, Kaitlyn joins THE WYATT FAMILY. Big E gets legit worried, and splits off from AJ as AJ simply doesn't care. Although using past history, you could also do this with Cody Rhodes.

Great show tonight. Although the last time I loved a RAW this much was after that one TLC, although I guess Bryan and Punk both came out of that alright (while Ryder was buried).

This. The McMahon Family can do whatever they want on the show. I don't care just as long as they don't get in the way of everyone else and let them do awesome things. The focus for the last two nights feels like it's in the right spots.

Vince and HHH want to have a match with each other? Cool! I'll go make a sandwich and then enjoy the rest of the show when they're done with their thing. Go ahead, guys.

Henry beat Ryback at WrestleMania, so it always made more sense for Henry to challenge Cena. I think this'll be a more entertaining feud. I don't expect Henry to win, because Cena/Bryan is such a great idea to headline SummerSlam with alongside Lesnar/Punk, but Henry could soften Cena up for Bryan.

Of course, Bryan could be seriously injured now, which might mess things up. It might prevent him from at least being in the MITB match, unless they work it in such a way to where Bryan sits out most of it, but hopefully he's on his way to a main event feud versus Cena.

Not only is the show better overall, but I really like who the champions are now. I think they have a pretty well established hierarchy of belts. World Heavyweight still seems unnecessary, but there's actually some heat on it now and the show overall was pretty compelling tonight.

If the June surprise winds up being "RAW actually starts telling compelling stories," I'm totally happy with that. Definitely June surprised with this episode.

The positive reaction to Payback caused me to check out this show, and I wasn't disappointed. Fun, fun show. Great to see they might finally be using Cesaro as a legit destroyer.

Two things, though:

-Christian is starting to look OLD. This observation was made all the funnier by Lawler saying "this young man." (Full disclosure: Christian and I are the same age.)

-Using the logic that Triple H used on Vickie, what exactly was Mark Henry's plan if Cena didn't stick around?

And the Slammy for most shocking moment goes to...Mark Henry.

Man I bought into it to the point that I believed it. The whole production of this angle was brilliant. The announcers setting it up throughout the night, a social media tie-in that worked....fans actually had signs saying goodbye, Henry walking out with the boots, delivering a crying filled speech. Just an amazing piece work.

Tonight's show was just short of excellent. The McMahon stuff was lame but tolerable.

Congrats to Mark Henry. You got me. I don't know if I've been that thoroughly fooled since Orndorff turned on Hogan.
Bravo. You had tears and everything.

Punk looked like he got dropped on his face. Ouch.

Maybe it's the crazy talking, but AJ is the most fearless woman on the roster. She stood up to and talked down to Stephanie while the other Diva's cowered in their boots towards Mrs. Helmsley. By the time Kaitlyn starts her horrible screechy promo the crowd had turned on her. Go AJ for standing up to another McMahon family bully, who would boo this woman seriously?

That was excellent acting by Mark Henry. His actual retirement speech is gonna be very unconvincing when the time comes.

Punk v. Brock!! I saw the "Brock Lesnar guy with the shirt" at the PPV last night and I would have loved to see his reaction when Brock came out. Apparently he's a CM Punk fan too and Punk acknowledged him at a Comic Con last year. We could of seen a man's head A-splode on live tv from his old and new favorite wrestlers entering a feud together.

Punk/Lesnar is total win for me and should have been the main event last year for SummerSlam. I so want Mark to kill Cena, but its not going to happen. Kaitlyn is not having a good week.
