Saw it last night on IMAX 3D. They gave us a cool print and since I used Fandango, a download code for the first Star Trek on iTunes. Good deal.

I thought the movie was excellent. The commercials and trailers are deceptive, as they cut different scenes together to imply things.

The 3D was worth it... there's so much things happening on the screen, and it was so cool when the ship went to warp. I will definately buy the 3D version when it comes out. IMAX was worth it as well, because it went large format A LOT.

I recommend seeing the movie with as little spoilers as possible because there were lots of twists and surprises.

But if you have seen the movie and want to talk about it, this is the thread. :)

Loved it as well. Won't spoil it except to say that the death scene had me, a 44 year old full grown adult, in tears (even as I knew that he couldn't really be dead, could he?)

Where did THAT come from?

Thought it was great! Karl Urban is the absolute perfect choice for Bones. He gives off that "Everyone around me are fucking retarded, why am I here?" attitude almost better than DeForrest Kelley did.

The third act after Kirk's death was kinda dumb, but I understand why it was needed and it was fun to see Spock go nuts and just wanna punch the bad guy. A big summer movie does need a chase scene. Half expected someone to knock over a hotdog cart at some point. I'm sure Future San Francisco still has hotdog vendors.

Gotta see this movie properly when I get out of here next week. 3D and all that.

Right? If you have seen the first movie, you know what you are getting into.

I think the dumbest thing for me was when Carol does that crazy scream from the trailers and you would think that person being victimized got killed but he barely was even injured from the face crushing.

Kinda wish it had ended with Khan escaping, Kirk on Ice, and the next movie being The Search for Khan...

That would've been awesome if JJ Abrams didn't bail out. Wish he could do just one more.

I keep hearing this and I don't understand why? It was moment Spock finally lets his human half out because his best friend is dead. What is so funny/bad about this? I you have the one best friend in the world die in front of you, you'd probably scream out in pain as well, and Spocks pain was pointed towards Kahn. It makes perfect sense.

Just saw it in 3-D & thought it was great. The way that major elements from the original universe were incorporated but with character roles switched around was genius. The art direction of this incarnation has been really cool. We got Klingons, lots of action, humor & heart wrenching emotion. All the subtleties and nods to old school fans were icing on the cake.

My oldest friend and the nerd who got me into Star Trek to begin with absolutely HATED Into Darkness. He used this AICN review (aintitcool.com) to express his feelings as counter to my rave. (backofthehead.com)

I disagree wholeheartedly, I might add.

Note: Could a mod please add the Star Trek or movie logo to this thread? Thanks.

The rage on those Aint it Cool comments is something else. My absolute favorite is the guy saying "HOW DID SOME THIS STUFF MAKE IT THROUGH DAILIES WITHOUT SOMEONE REALIZING THAT THE GENERAL MOVIEGOING PUBLIC WILL TEAR IT TO SHREDS?" His first example? The blue vapor trail the enterprise leaves when it warps. You can't make this stuff up.

I thought it was a phenomenal film in the Abrams universe edition of Star Trek. I don't care if it took elements from Wrath of Khan, and don't really need to get into the debate of "was it a remake?" If anything, this release will likely push people to re-watch Wrath of Khan, or more importantly, see it for the first time.

I'm a life-long nerd, and I have no trouble admitting that classic Star Trek, while great in its own way, is not a very accessible franchise to new viewers. It's dialogue heavy with dated technology. It is hard to identify a good jumping on point for the average viewer, and it does not hold up well in the out of context "movie clips" sort of culture we have become on youtube et al. Its great once you become invested in it, but its hard to find that initial spark. I think that initial spark might be the greatest thing that Abram's films accomplish. I've seen the action and basic characters this universe has to offer, and I've gotten the witty summer block-buster cliff notes of an emotional complex relationship between Kirk and Spock. If I want MORE of that, on a more serious level, I now know where to go to find it.

I am a life long Star Trek fan and after seeing Yahoo's main page, spoil the damn thing, I was ready to burn the theater to the ground. I didn't, that is why I am able to post this. I thought it was good, not great, not terrible. Just good.

You have to keep repeating to yourself this is an alternate timeline and thus some things will be different. It makes sense to me, the Federation would lose their minds over losing Vulcan and almost Earth. It makes sense that if Khan was found, he would eventually turn the tables on his captors like he did in Space Seed. So, zero problem with that. Zero problem with Benedict as Khan even though the alternate timeline shouldn't have changed races.

The first third of the movie was amazing. Once we find its Khan, the movie becomes a weird homage/one upsmenship. There it fails. You cannot top the untoppable. They did a great job with making it Kirk dying, but there is no weight there. In WOFK when Spock dies there is years of friendship between Kirk and Spock, here is just two guys who are becoming friends. This needed to be saved for a third movie. So, it is no wonder people laughed at Spock shouting Khan.

The cast is awesome and as the dialogue is great. Even the action scenes are intense. I am glad they keep asking moral questions from time to time which is Star Trek. The real problem is not the typical fanboy shit like the blue trial that the Enterprise leaves or the fact it seems like there is zero distance between Earth and Chronos. Its the lazy and egoistical way of taking something that is established and thinking you can do better when you can't. There are literally thousands of stories to tell using Star Trek, there is no need to go to a well that everyone has gone too many times as well. The refreshing thing about rebooting Trek was to do new things which is my hope. Now, that they are hopefully done with Khan, they can find new stories to be told. Still, I liked it way better than Iron Man 3, but it is nowhere near my top five Treks of all time.

I just hope JJ doesn't think bringing Vader back is a good idea for Episode 8.

This is an excellent review.

Having seen it twice, I never saw the Wrath of Khan homages as Abrams and his writers trying to top Khan. I saw it as taking the alternate timeline and creating echoes of what happened before. Because they're the same people, but different, thrown in a similar situation, but different, some things ripple and happen again, but differently. And to me, it held up. It worked. We got to see familiar beats of a familiar story play out differently. To me, that's the fun of the alternate universe.

I wholeheartedly concur and have said for years Star Trek needs new ideas, new stories, and new ways to address the human condition, but these JJ Abrams action blockbusters are not the conduit for that. That would be if there is ever another Star Trek television series. I don't care which universe. I love what JJ Abrams is doing with these movies in the meantime.

I understand the ripple effect to some degree, but if we are saying this is an alternate timeline when anything can happen and has. There should be no ripples. We should not see the exact same scenes and even words from Wrath of Khan. It really starts with Young Spock calling Old Spock. Which is a massive plot hole. Why does Young Spock even call him? Why does he think he would know about Khan? Does he do this every time they run into something like the Klingons or a Starbucks on Neptune? Should I go with the latte or the straight Cardissan Sunrise Expresso? If he called Old Spock to say Starfleet has gone batshit and you are the only person I trust, so I called you then he drops the name Khan, I would buy that more.

Its really bad writing for a scene that needs to be very simple. And that is the problem with this film. Midway through, simple shit like Kirk saving the Enterprise could be done without him dying. They don't need to pull a Heroes' plot point and go with Khan's magic blood. Once, you do that, you are saying the Federation is practically immortal, hell Kirk is a zombie to some degree. He died and was brought back via a blood ritual. I am shocked he didn't begin chewing on McCoy when he woke up. You could have had Spock vs. Khan be an epic fight and then have Kirk show up at the end to shot Khan in the back. Hell, have Kirk and Spock tag team then have Uhura shot Khan. They forgot basic writing 101, KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid.

I do like this film about 80%. Khan being a legit bad ass was nice to see again. Kirk's resurrection was less silly than Spock's in three. Starfleet being evil is a nice touch and call back to Star Trek 6. I am even ok with them killing Pike which I thought would be the biggest nerd scream, but they did it well even though the mindmeld thing was a bit off. I honestly thought Spock using it on Khan to beat him was gong to happen, but it didn't really go anywhere. Admiral Marcus is as good as a villain is Khan and Cumberbatch nails it out of the park. Hell, they all do. My problem is using the same old stuff from previous Trek films. While, I do agree Star Trek works better on TV after the rather disappointing box office, I wonder if it will return to the small screen or even back to the big screen.

"Rather disappointing box office"? Isn't it basically on pace (so far) with the 2009 movie?

Remember, the people commenting on that AICN review are insane, and their opinions of how successful this movie will be should not be taken seriously.

That's correct about AICN nerds. Except to gauge insane responses and laugh at the saddest of the nerds, why would anyone still go to AICN?

North American box office is a little disappointing. (hollywoodreporter.com) Sequels to blockbusters as well received as Star Trek 2009 was are expected to do bigger business. But internationally, Star Trek Into Darkness is up 80% from the 2009 movie.

I didn't say anything about AICN and yeah, they are the worst thing about well everything on the internet. Trek is a very weird franchise. Sometimes its viewed as a jewel like during the 90s hey day and last the film and other times is treated as an embarrassment like in the 60s and in the 2000s. I hope this isn't treated like an endgame. I want Trek back on TV, but I am not sure how they are going to do it with this cast. I doubt most of that cast would consider doing TV, so I am not sure how we get Star Trek back on TV maybe another starship like the Bradbury which again, great call back.

My first thought was "Bradbury??? Are you nuts, it HAS to have the Enterprise as its flagship!!!!" but then I realized DS9 was my favorite Trek show. (and Voyager had Seven of Nine, so you know... that...)

I can't see the current cast switching to TV, and you'd need just about all of them to agree to it to work. I think that without waiting 10 years for people to move on from the current cast, the next TV version might have to be a spinoff with a new crew and ship all together.

I'm not sure how well a series set in the "past" could do though. To even casual fans, alien races like Klingons and Vulcans have all been explored. How do you make a show about exploration, and set it in the past when we know everything they're about to discover before they do.

One of the best things about Star Trek is the "where no one has gone before" idea, and to try to do a Trek show without that being at the forefront gets you into the Enterprise series level of fan boredom.

Maybe the best thing to do is just keep these movies going for a few more years, and think about a new "Next Generation" type show in 5-10 years or so.

Figured it'd be worth it to start a thread for the very last episode of Glee. The show was once a monster hit, but it has completely faded into obscurity in this final season. I didn't watch every episode this season (or last season, for that matter)
