Having read the Extremis comic book arc, it was supposed to be one guy who had heat powers and could breath fire. He beats the crap out of Iron Man, who kind of forces/guilt trips Maya to give HIM Extremis so he can control his suit with his mind. In the movie, he already does that in the beginning!

As someone who doesn't watch Downton Abbey, what is Jon Favreau talking about?

Weird how Rhodey, the President, Chase from 24 are all the same size and can fit into the Iron Patriot suit. Weird that Pepper gets Extremis and automatically knows kung fu. Weird that Tony Stark gets the shrapnel removed at the end, thus making Iron Man 2 completely pointless with the blood poisoning and finding of the new element.

I just think it's completely uncharacteristic of Stark not to have a backup War Machine model (or 12) for someone he trusts as much as Rhodes.

I actually didn't miss The Hot Suit On Suit Action but part of me really wanted to see Rhodey open up a can on his prodigal Iron Patriot suit instead of being rendered mostly inert during the climax.

You have Don Cheadle guys. USE HIM.

If the movie was called War Machine, then yes, I'd agree with you. It is called Iron Man 3. Given that, there was very little 'Iron Man' in this film, which I think was actually a good thing.

My favorite part of the movie was the dealing of Tony's PTSD for flying through a wormhole, seeing another part of reality he never knew existed and (almost) dying in New York. I love it because it shows great comic-book continuity and crossover story detail.

I also found it weird that Pepper went from barely being able to use the hand thrusters when Tony's mansion is getting blown up, to easily taking out one of Tony's automated suits, attaching the arm of it, kick a missile at ALdrich, and shoot it to blow him up and save the day. That scene has been bothering me all day as it seemed they made Pepper Potts unnecessarily useful for a girl power moment in the film.

I thought Suit-mageddon was tremendous. It answered the question "if you watched Transformers as a kid and had a brilliant mind for physics, math, and robotics as well as endless amounts of money what would you do?"

Iron Patriot is the new Freedom Fries.

Someone made the point in the non-spoiler thread for this movie that maybe the Ben Kingsley's rendition of the Mandarin was created that way because of the foreshadowing of Thanos in Avengers. I actually liked the idea of "The Mandarin" being a fabrication funded by a major government official as it reminds me of a conspiracy theory I heard in 2009. It suggested the Bin Laden footage that we had been shown at that point had pre-dated the event in 9/11 and what we had been shown was carefully doctored footage to fuel fire for going to war in Iraq and that Bin Laden himself was probably dead from failing kidney disease.

I actually thought it was just ok. Numerous times I thought where is SHIELD? Then I thought the villains' plot was weird, but the Mandarin thing was perhaps the most disappointing. Its like finding out Dr.Doom was a robot controlled by Mole Man who is sorta Doom. Good on them for getting me on it, but is a silly twist. The rest of it was good.

I actually enjoyed the Mandarin twist. I remember watching the initial trailers and having a good laugh over how overdramatic he sounded, but having watched the movie, it actually makes sense now! He's SUPPOSED to be overdramatic, because he's an actor!

Obviously, if you were expecting a Mandarin story, you were slightly disappointed. But I think this was a great adaptation of Warren Ellis' original Extremis story. And I really enjoyed the slightly darker tone that came with that.

Tony's PTSD was a great touch and I loved that it gave rhyme and reason to his constant wisecracks, since they're now looked at as more of a defense mechanism than anything else.

This is my biggest gripe of the film, because if there's anything we had beaten into our heads repeatedly over the course of two films (three, if you count The Avengers), it's that Tony Stark needed the battery to help prevent the shrapnel from reaching his heart. You're telling me he could have had that surgically removed any time he wanted???

I didn't think the Maya Hansen character was necessary at all, except I had never heard of the actress before and thought she was quite attractive.

Re: The shrapnel. Tony fixed Extremis, thus fixed Pepper, then applied the process to himself so he could heal with the shrapnel removed. It wasn't OVERT, but it was explained in the closing voice over.

EDIT: I guess I wrong. I've now read a few synopses of the film, and my description appears to be inaccurate. I guess he just "cured" Pepper and had plain old surgery to remove the shrapnel. Hmmm.

I liked this much better than 2, even though I had a hard time believing in the Extremis soldiers as credible threats. Well, I guess TOO credible. They seemed way too powerful for lackeys. They reminded me a bit of X3 for some reason.

But other than that and some standard plot hole problems with the Mandarin's master plan, I thought it was great.

She's been in a few movies recently. I first noticed her in Frost/Nixon. She was also the female lead in The Town and Vicky in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

See that is a giant problem for me. What was the cure and how would it even come close to getting the shrapnel out? That is a massive thing that gets skipped over.

The shrapnel is removed from his heart and extremis fixes it?

Of course it's 2013, I think we're pretty advanced wheN it comes to heart surgery at this point. Especially when you've got a billionaire who is able to pay for the best people to work on him.

People act like not having shrapnel in him is going to ruin the character, but he's been without it in the comics for literally decades, probably longer than most people who complain about the change have been alive.

John, on your point from your review about "Suddenly Iron Man armor isn't so special anymore."

That's just it. The world has changed since Iron Man 2. There are gods and monsters and aliens now. Stark tech is not as coveted by the bad guys anymore, because Stark isn't the top power in the world anymore.

More than slightly.

I liked it okay. I admired it on certain levels.

Bottom line for me, I go to Iron Man movies to have a great time. Iron Man One, I had a great time. Iron Man Two, I had a great time. Iron Man Three, I didn't have a great time.

Well... the little kid gave Tony the newspaper that said he was dead. I think Marvel wanted us to think that was the excuse for him not calling SHIELD or the Avengers... had to lay low so he can solve the mystery of the bombs that leave no evidence. Honestly, I think Iron Man benefited from being a stand alone solo movie. A lot of sequels suffer from having too many characters from the comics. Looking at the filming photos for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, that movie might have this problem.

And MAN was the end credits long as hell for a throwaway scene with Bruce Banner. I wish they would just cut into the extra scene after a minute into the credits.

That was trolling at its finest. Not sure WHY you'd want to troll the audience that spends millions on your product, but...

It was the cinematic equivalent of an RDJ interview. He's always fucking with you.

I loved the flick and didn't mind the Manderin Swerve. As for the actress that played Maya Hansen, never seen her before, but from the nose down, she's Molly Ringwald.

I enjoyed it a little more than Iron Man 2. Once I started reading vague references to there being a "twist" about the Mandarin, and that he was in cahoots with Aldrich, I pretty much called exactly what it was going to be.

John O is dead-on with the Edward Nygma comparison, I thought the exact same thing in that scene.

The middle is weighted down too much with the little kid, and there was a bit too much goofy humor...the secene with the guy in the TV truck was too Michael-Bay-Transformers for me.

I didn't mind that the post-credits scene was sillier than something Dead Serious with Nick Fury. It ties into the "science buddies" ending of Avengers and also gives closure to Tony's voiceover narration in the film itself.

I do like how the technology improves by leaps and bounds with every Iron Man film, as it should be.

Nice to see Lost's Rebecca Mader in a brief appearance. I forgot James Badge Dale was in this because I completely didn't recognize him (I only know him from Rubicon).

I liked it, but felt the bad guys were almost too powerful. Every time it seemed Tony might get an advantage, he was smacked back down. "How is he gonna get himself out of this one?" is fun, but here was exhausting.

Could those end credits have been any longer? I swear, they made up names and titles on purpose just to make it longer.
