Kimmel, as a guy who grew up as a fan of Letterman, must be thrilled with the idea of causing Leno to be pushed out of the Tonight Show before Letterman leaves the Late Show. Dave wins with an assist from Kimmel. And Leno leaving in 2014 would surely mean Dave would leave in 2015 or so and who knows what happens here.
But...Fallon is only in this spot because NBC tried to this same thing three years ago and then changed their minds months later. This is not done until Leno's gone for two years.

CBS should try to hire Leno as Dave's replacement, just to see the shit REALLY hit the fan.

Originally posted by NY Times article aboveAnother complicating factor has been Mr. Leno’s success in the ratings.
In recent weeks, he has continued to finish first — always in the category of total viewers and usually among viewers ages 18 to 49, the most sought-after group for late-night advertisers.
So, as I understand this story:
Comcast, having shown such ineptitude running NBC that the network actually managed recently to finish fifth in a four horse race, has decided that the best way to improve network fortunes is to revamp the one show it has that consistently wins its time slot, both for overall viewers and for the 18 to 49 demographic.
I would absolutely love to hear what NBC's affiliates have to say about this plan.

Now it's time to start thinking about who replaces Jimmy Fallon. And the early frontrunner is Seth Meyers!
As if there haven't been enough rumors flying this week about the possible replacement of Jay Leno with Jimmy Fallon, Page Six reports on a replacement for Fallon on "Late Night": Current "Saturday Night Live" head writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers.
According to their unnamed source, "Lorne Michaels wants Seth to take over from Fallon. It would be perfect for him. Tina Fey’s name had also come up, but she has said she was too busy to do it.”
When asked by The New York Times' Bill Carter at an event Monday evening whether he would take the job, Meyers was noncommittal. "Nobody could do that job as well as Jimmy Fallon," said at the time, while declining to elaborate.
You know, I would say that I don't know if I could take a full hour of a Seth Meyers late nite show...but it wasn't too long ago that I said the same thing about Jimmy Fallon, so who even knows anymore?

I'm sorry... Dave wins WHAT? The longevity award? Seems to me Letterman hasn't beaten Leno at anything else except maybe (MAYBE) public esteem, and that has nothing to do with Kimmel.
I know people want to make this a Leno-Letterman thing, but this is strictly a Leno-NBC thing.
I mean, this is amazing. Is there different people in charge at NBC than there were 3 years ago? Was the switch back to Jay Leno because they had soured on Conan so quickly? This whole series of events just continues to be baffling.

Yes. The last fiasco (Jay > Conan > Jay) was done under the old General Electric ownership; NBC has been purchased by Comcast since then and there's a new set of suits in charge with it.
Personally, the fact that they are uprooting the show from Los Angeles to New York for Jimmy and putting Lorne Michaels and his co-horts in charge is a sure sign there's going to be no backsies this time and Jay's days are truly done. (It's sad because if Conan had been given this kind of support from the beginning of *his* transition, Conan's Tonight Show probably would've survived - at the very least, Conan needed to stay in New York a hell of a lot more than Jimmy does.)
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; June 18, 2006) While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

I get why they're moving the show from CA to NY, but wont it be weird for NBC to have NO late night talk show presence in Los Angeles? I always thought them having shows on both coasts help them cover both entertainment capitals on the US and now they wont have that.
This way it'll be easier to stack bookings (appearances) - going from 'Today' to 'Tonight' to 'Late Night' without leaving the building*. It's what they do with GMA, Live with Kelly and The View most days. It'll most likely be a boon for Late Night's booking department, and leave poor Craig Ferguson out on the left coast all alone, which may help him as well.
*I'm sure they'll leave the building between 9AM and 5PM (when Tonight will probably tape.)

Well, they do still have Carson Daly out in LA. (But as you pretty well demonstrated, no one cares about him, poor guy.)

And Carson Daly's show isn't a "late-night talk show" in the strictest sense anymore. It's more like a magazine-format entertainment show. All canned segments.
Originally posted by David Letterman“Now earlier today, NBC announced that Jimmy Fallon will take over for Jay Leno as host of the ‘Tonight Show’ in February of 2014. This is – something’s wrong here. This happened once before with Conan O’Brien, and then they had to bring Jay back, and so he had to start his show all over again, and now it looks like the same thing is happening. And I just – I don’t get this. He’s retiring, so it says, and good for him. I’ve known him 38 years. I’ve known Jay Leno for 38 years, thank you. I don’t know what aspect of that you’re applauding, but thank you…So now he’s out again, but going out on top. So congratulations to Jay, a job well done. And, I mean, how many times can a guy be pushed out of the job, I mean. And what’s the matter with NBC? What’s the matter with these guys? You know, honestly, what are they thinking…? “…And, as with everything in life, all I really care about is how will this affect me? That’s all I really care about. And, Paul, is there any way NBC can push me out of this job? Can they do that? I don’t know…So, here’s what it’s going to be, Paul. It’s going to be you and me and two guys named Jimmy. Right there, that’s not right. No, no, right now, we have a Jay, we have a Jimmy, we have a Dave. Oh, forget that. In February, kiss that goodbye – Jimmy, Jimmy, Dave…But good luck to Jay. I know he’ll be out on the road, getting it done and taking care of business and congratulations on a nice long run there at the ‘Tonight Show,’ if in fact you’re not coming back.”

Bill Carter, author of "The Late Shift" and "The War For Late Night", seemed pretty sure that eventually the news would come out that Late Night is moving to L.A when he appeared on The B.S. Report. He also didn't really seem to buy the rumors of Seth Myers to Late Night, thinking that it seems too obvious, and Lorne Michaels always ends up making a decision out of left field, like when he picked Fallon to take over Late Night originally.

Mike's "challenge" to Ronnie was so hilarious. He was totally doing the good ole' "if I act insane, he won't fight me" routine. And Ronnie just closes in for the kill.
