Someone's got to do it. I was half paying attention during a lot of it.

The big go home angle was Punk laying out Undertaker with a distraction involving Paul Heyman as Paul Bearer and druids. Punk used the urn on Undertaker, then opened it, and poured the ashes inside on Undertaker. He was rubbing the ashes on his face as they ended the show.

The ashes bit was so over the top that I wasn't offended, though it clearly was meant to offend. The best part of the angle today for me was CM Punk's "Sit up for me!" taunt during the beatdown. A CM Punk who believes he's the only real one and sees everyone else as fakes to expose is an interesting CM Punk. Shock Jock CM Punk who then mocks people for being offended, not as interesting.

Show was a lot of talk to build up WrestleMania. Cena led off the show with his final speech (which got boring chants but was good), and Rock did his response at the start of the 3rd hour (which was about the same as the Rock's been this time.)

Start of the 2nd hour slot went to the HHH/Brock feud. HBK appeared on the show, they did a tease of HBK not believing HHH could win (like the Undertaker feud), and finally people stopped interrupting Shawn for long enough for him to say HHH could win and he would be in Hunter's corner on Sunday.

For reasons that never quite made sense, Zeb Colter faced Alberto Del Rio in a match. It was said Zeb challenged ADR, but then didn't appear to want the match. It worked out for him anyway, since Ricardo wouldn't stay in the back and his crutches were broken over Alberto's back. This was supposed to be a heavy bit but there's so many different things that I'm not sure anyone remembered it by the show ended.

Ryback throat was fine and he got some revenge on Mark Henry by using Santino as a weapon. The Fandango/Jericho feud actually seems to be working. The Shield feud seemed have already peaked; they got Show/Sheamus/Orton trio to 'getting along' about a week too soon are now running in place. Barrett/Miz is moved to the pre-show on YouTube, but the eight person tag is not (at least until they time it out again. Cole lost his mind by the end of that preview tag match

Stephanie and Trish chatted back and forth on Twitter to explain Stephanie inducting Trish in the Hall of Fame. It feels like not the right person but maybe Trish feels differently and maybe I still can't be bothered to care about this Hall of Fame.

Vince was on Twitter promising a 'big reveal' on Friday. They hyped it up like it was a notable thing, but probably not so much on the Friday before WrestleMania (a show they were already taping.) I'm thinking it's the reveal of the WM set, but dunno.

actual wrestling matches

1) Big Show, Randy Orton and Sheamus b 3MB
2) Dolph Ziggler b Daniel Bryan
3) Wade Barrett b Zack Ryder Is Not Going To WM (despite Miz doing commentary)
4) Mark Henry b Santino (who had annoyed Br-icky and was being punished)
5) Alberto Del Rio DQ? Zeb Coulter [non-title]
6) Chris Jericho b Antonio Cesaro (despite Fandango grading his moves at ringside and attacking him as soon as Jericho won.)
7) Bella Twins b Funkadactyls [Brie pins Cameron]

2 & 6 are predictable worth tracking down.

#WWEisBoring

That says it all. But I guess I'll elaborate.

I'm so not invested in the main event. They had one more chance to sell me on it and what did we get? A John Cena promo that drew "boring" chants and a Rocky nonsense promo. Does anyone buy Cena's "My time is NOW!" promo when it's BEEN his time for the last eight years? And what was Rock even talking about?

The novelty of Undertaker's 1995-throwback feud has worn off completely. What exactly was this feud supposed to be BEFORE Paul Bearer died? I guess it was supposed to be one of those dull feuds about wrestling and respect and God knows those feuds are never interesting...unless it's between Undertaker and Triple H or Shawn, in which case we get video packages that eat up half the show and the fanbase is expected to be overwhelmed by how much those guys just RESPECT each other. But CM Punk? No sir, his feud needs to be SPICED UP with some good old-fashioned borderline-disrespect of the dead.

Why did they even bother with Del Rio/Swagger this week? I can't wait for them to mercy kill this feud on Sunday. They...ARE mercy killing it, right? Even Vince wouldn't be crazy enough to put the belt on Swagger a month after his DUI bust, would he?

This was the first time in years that Shawn Michaels appeared on my TV and I just...didn't...care.

Ryback/Henry is the only feud that holds an ounce of my interest and it's tempered by the cold reality that the actual match is going to be "bowling shoe ugly." Ryback using Santino as a projectile was pretty cool. And on a sidenote, Santino's been gone for weeks and THIS is the best they could do with his return? Have him antagonize Vickie and Maddox and essentially go back to the exact same comedy character he's always been?

Follow this line of logic. Chris Jericho gets clean wins over Dolph Ziggler (the guy who won MitB and is the presumed next WHC), Intercontinental champion Wade Barrett, and United States champion Antonio Cesaro in the span of eight days...but he's set to job to Fandango on Sunday. With that kind of buildup, Jericho should be challenging for a major title, not laying down for Johnny Curtis. Another sidenote: Antonio Cesaro, the U.S. champion and a guy who's been nothing short of phenomenal in the past year, is not booked at all for the show. They couldn't find room on a FOUR HOUR SHOW for the U.S. champion. Unbelievable.

Big E Langston broke Kane's grip with his bare hands. Whoopity fuck. Ask Mason Ryan how well that worked out for him.

And that's all I got. These 3-hour shows are just soul-crushing.

See you Sunday. I'll just say, thank God I'm not paying for this PPV solo or I'd pass completely.

I have been trying to find a reason to come back and watch the Wrestlemania and the WWE on a regular basis and I just can't find one.

For weekly viewing, three hours is just killing me. Two hours for RAW to three hours It is like going from satellite radio to regular radio. Two hours was nice and tight and solid - like satellite radio. Three hours is just filler - like regular radio.

As for Wrestlemania, I got nothing. No match excites me. I am as big a Jericho fan as there is, but his match makes me sad. He is in a no win situation. Win and you beat a ball room dancer in his first match. Lose and you lost to a ball room dancer in his first match.

I happen to catch the Jericho/Cesaro match flipping through tonight and laughed when Fandango came down and the crowd chanted "You can't wrestle" through the whole Jericho/Fandango encounter. I will say this, if Jericho can drag a good match out of Fandango and make him a solid heel, Vince should reward Jericho with a legitimate title run. No BS runs like he had - a 3 month clean wins over top wrestlers title run.

Life is hilariously cruel.

Wow, that was quite the mega-heel promo from John Cena. Are we sure he hasn't already turned yet? The way he screamed like an evil dictator to the Cenation "The CHAMP! IS.... HEEEEAAAAAUUUGGGGHHHH!!!" and his voice got all low seems to suggest either demonic possession or that he's gone completely power mad.

I do like how they established that John Cena will, in fact, defend the new belt if he wins it and not bring back the Spinner. Not that he ever was, but the explanation worked for me.

The return of John Lauranaitis on Smackdown! really seems to subtly hint towards a WrestleMania X7 recycled angle with Cena and Lauranaitis. I hope they don't go that obvious with it, but then again, maybe they won't go that way at all.

Still, I feel like we needed one more face-to-face between Rock and Cena and we didn't get it. But, I guess by not doing another face-to-face, neither one can "win" on the go home show and the result is more difficult to predict.

Rock's promo kinda bored me. Personally, though, this is the match that interests me the most just with what they've done in the last two weeks. I really do believe there's a legit chance Rock could retain, even though his scheduling makes that a REALLY hard sell, Cena's just heeling it up too much with the borderline insecurity to where he may lose three WrestleManias in a row driven by his obsession with being the best.

I don't understand why Jericho's going over so much. I wonder if Vince has some grandiose plan for Fandango that involves him winning a world title, King of the Ring, the Royal Rumble, and the European title on his first night in the company. The booking here really does make no sense and they're really banking a lot on this new guy. I'll just appreciate the Jericho while it lasts, because every time he comes back, he does something worth watching.

The only thing that bugged me about the Undertaker/Punk stuff at the end was that they really did make this feud entirely about that urn prop. They could have made so much more out of this feud, but now I feel like an Undertaker win is really telegraphed since Punk is playing this like such a classic heel. I'd love it if they really defied my expectations and had Punk go over to huge heel heat.

Thing is, if anyone dare criticise the closing segment for being low rent, almost immedeatley we'll get the straw man argument of ''STFU HES A HEEL WAT DO U EXPECT U WANT EGDY BUT CRY WEN U GET IT PUNK 4 LIFE NEES TO FASES''

Actually, I'm crying for a *good* product, not an 'edgy' one. Not one where they stoop to any lows to garner some cheap heat for a guy they should never have turned heel in the first place.

Low rent stuff like mocking the recently deceaced, only really came into vogue during the ratings low point of 02-06.

I love the fact that people who think mocking the recently deceased is maybe a bit distastefull are the bad guys in some peoples eyes. I'm a Punk mark, but I'm not so blinded by it that I'll defend everything he does. I swear, if Punk murdered some kittens live on air for cheap heat, we'd get ''STFU HES A HEELL PLUS THE KITTENS OWNERS ARE OK WIV IT SO WHY R U CRYIN WAT DO U EXPECT PUNK 4 LIFE #NEES TO FACES LLOL''

I thought that Cena cut a dynamite heel promo to start the show. Seriously, he needs to turn, because he will be The Best Heel. "It was made for you, but you're going to lose it on your first defense. It was made for you, but it will be defended by me." Great stuff.

Also great - Bryan v. Ziggler. These guys can wrestle every week, I am just fine with that.

Other stuff I liked last night; hang on, let me think. Must be something. I mean, it's not like the go-home show for the biggest event of the year would be so absolutely lackluster that I would only enjoy about 20 minutes worth of a 3 hour show. Must be something else in there. I'll get back to you guys.

Oh God, I hate to dredge all this Paul Bearer stuff up again, but maybe it's helpful to draw a distinction between Paul Bearer, the cartoon character WWE owns whose whole gimmick was goofy supernatural stuff, and William Moody the actual person who's deceased.

But you know what? Forget I said that. I don't even know why I'm bringing this up again. I don't even like this Undertaker vs. Punk angle. The ghost of Paul Bearer and the urn is to Undertaker vs. Punk what Stephanie was to Chris Jericho vs. Triple H at WrestleMania X8.

I did like the ashes in the mouth. Now Undertaker knows how Martin Short felt when he had to drink sand out of his water bottle in The Three Amigos. And you know what? I'm a Paul Heyman Dressed As Paul Bearer Guy.

I found Bret Hart's tweets last night interesting, though:

@BretHart The spilled Paul Bearer ashes might seem in poor taste but Paul would've absolutely loved it. Raw was excellent overall.

So there's that from a guy who knew Bill Moody.

‏@BretHart I really liked the Bella's match tonight, and the angle Punk did with Undertaker was brilliant.

THERE'S something I want to talk about: The Bellas. They were terrific and so were Naomi and Cameron. Really nice, technically pleasing, Divas tag team match. In fact, if I had access to Fandango's deck of scorecards, I'd score the match a 10.

What was The Rock talking about? He was talking about becoming President. The only problem would be, if The Rock becomes President then who will be around to uncover and prove that it's really Zartan posing as The Rock as President?

I like that Triple H Balboa cannot go into his bi-annual fight against an invincible opponent without his other wife Adrian Michaels to convince him he can win.

Speaking of Triple H's wife, if my bellowing laughter were actual currency, Heyman would never go broke taking his weekly shot at Stephanie.

For the Go Home RAW, I concur with Fandango's scorecards: 2, 3, and 4. (Bellas not included = 10)

I am going to have no choice, but drink my way through Mania. How expensive can hard liquor be at the Meadowlands? I mean hard strong liquor. I might even make my Wrestlemania debut as I stumble into the ring during Taker/Punk. I mean we are going for shock and awe in this feud right?

Cena's promo is a cock tease. He is not going heel, they are making us think that, because its the only card they have to play in this feud. Brock is going to be 1-2, his first year back. Think about and both loses are to guys who don't deserve it. Its maddening. Just as maddening as my tickets saying doors open at 6:30. So, Miz/Barrett maybe in a half full arena. I can't believe I have waited my whole life to go to Wrestlemania, the showcase of the immortals and I get showcase of guys who can barely wrestle both young and old. I better start drinking now

I kind of admire The Miz on commentary for how he sold his demoted pre-show match with Wade Barrett. He hyped that thing up like there was a gun to his head. I also enjoyed how he talked about winning the Triple Crown at WrestleMania and "The Story of The Miz at WrestleMania."

Here's another story of The Miz:

Pre-show in 2009, main evented in the final match in 2011, back to the pre-show in 2013.

The story is called Coming Full Circle.

There is something to be said for the sheer spectacle of the stadium WrestleMania and it's awesome in that respect just being there. I really hope you have a good time. You and everyone else going. I don't mean that facetiously. I've been to three stadium WrestleManias and it usually turned out the opposite of what I thought. I didn't think 24 looked good on paper and it was an amazing show. I had high hopes for 25 and it was the shits. I walked into 28 expecting to go home with the fait accompli of a Cena victory in Miami and instead The Rock won. Point is, you never know until it happens. Apart from how the show is booked and whether or not the booking lines up with what you want, I hope you and everyone going (especially if it's your first WrestleMania) have a good experience.

If I'm not mistaken, he also called him "Hocus Pocus", as in "C'mon, Hocus Pocus, sit up for me!" That was pretty much the only thing I enjoyed.

(Not totally true: Fandango judging Jericho, Lawler's continuing, inexplicable admiration for Fandango and the ensuing debate among Cole/Lawler/JBL about whether Cole is as qualified to judge people as Fandango and discussion of Cole's extensive ballroom dancing training was funny, as was a later moment where you could tell one or both of them had legitimately made Cole laugh to the point that he must have muted himself.

Also, Ryback's "I didn't touch you, stuuuuuupid!" after he threw Santino at Henry was so dumb that it was funny.

Also, also, the brief moment where The Shield came down - all on one stairwell, even! - then paused, which made it briefly appear like The Shield was somehow using themselves as a distraction and a second The Shield was going to run in from the other side. I would have been OK with that if Second Reigns had yelled something like "HOLOGRAMS!" after attacking.)

What they do with Cena on Sunday is pretty much their biggest decision in a long, long time. It'll be interesting to see if they finally rise to the occassion.

Oh, and if Punk is taking time off after Wrestlemania, the finish to Punk/Taker should be Punk getting trapped inside the urn.

Problem is that Cena has been heeling it up almost *too* much in the last two weeks, meaning if he proves he's 'better than the rock' and makes The Rock tap out (the most likely outcome, if we're being honest) at WM, then he comes across as a bit of a insecure arrogant douchebag who's jealous of the rock. If he loses clean at WM, he comes across as loudmouth arrogant douchebag who couldn't back up his words.

Bascially, what I'm saying is, whatever happens, Cena comes off of this feud looking like an arrogant douchebag.

I have to echo this... This will be my 3rd overall Mania (and 3rd in a row, no less), and the atmosphere is pretty fantastic. As much as I'm not crazy about this show's build-up, I am convinced I'm going to be pleasantly surprised by a lot of things... I could predict an Orton heel turn, more Cena heel hints, Fandango putting on a strong debut, Naomi flying through the air like Blitzkrieg, and I guaran-damn-tee an amazing Lesnar/Triple H match. As much as everyone gripes about Triple H, he will bring it Sunday night. I'm optimistic that this Mania, while not as good as 28, will blow 27 away.

The creaky Punk/Taker angle is so 1980s old-school that it's circled back around to retro cool. And the image of Punk bathing in urn ashes was freaky. It's a shame the angle can't live up to that. Taker has done nothing to move this along, and Punk has carried it completely. He's gonna die in a glorious fashion on Sunday. Another nice image was Team Ziggler standing with the belts.

Having not seen Curtis do anything outside the Fandango gimmick, I don't know what to expect from him at Mania.

Bored with The Shield, bored with Del Rio/Swagger. Love that the Rhodes Scholars wear each other's shirts.

I'm not offended by anything that Punk and Taker have done involving Paul Bearer, and I think it's pretty obvious Taker wins then does some sort of urn tribute to Bearer, but I just don't think it's been good. I think Punk in particular would have cut much better promos without the lame urn angle.

With that kind of buildup, Jericho should be challenging for a major title, not laying down for Johnny Curtis.

I think the problem here is our own opinion of Curtis vs. what the WWE wants to do with him. Based on what we've seen in the past he's not a big enough deal to go over somebody Jericho after everything Jericho has done, but if you're really trying to build somebody, which the WWE is trying to do with Curtis, then this is absolutely what you do. So it is good booking on the WWE's part. It's just that most of us don't think that talent belongs in that spot. The WWE apparently does though, and it's not like it would be the first time the WWE likes a wrestler better than most of the viewers.

I concur on everybody's thoughts on Taker. I really hope that this is his last Wrestlemania. I like the idea of using the streak as a measuring tape from now on and having somebody try and chase the streak rather than the Undertaker. Obviously any candidates are still a long way off but I hope the Shield goes over so they have three options of guys that could potentially chase the streak. Cesaro would be a good choice if he even gets on the show Sunday.

It sounds like I'm benefiting from not watching the buildup shows (outside of a few minute stretches of Raw and Smackdown here and there). There are several matches I'm excited about, just from the participants alone:
Rock/Cena (likely won't be good, but still has a big match feel)
Brock/HHH
Taker/Punk
The tag title match
Jericho/Fandango
Shield vs. Sheamus/Orton/Show

If those six matches are above average, this should be a great show.

I'm sort of treating WM like a big indy show (which is kind of weird to think): Don't worry about the backstory and let the matches speak for themselves.

Besides the continuing urn obsession, I thought Trish being inducted by Stephanie McMahon instead of Lita and the fact that it's bumping MICK FOLEY from the TV broadcast was the most annoying thing on the show. Then again, it's not like the TV broadcast of the HOF and its 10,000 edit points is much worth watching anyway.

I actually thought all the final angles on the show were good; they all would've been fine cappers to a good build, they just didn't collectively reignite the spark that's been missing.

Shield match and Jericho/Fandango have had the best build-ups IMO. Rock/Cena has been good in the limited things they've done but the curious m.o. this year has almost been to not do angles because they don't want the two guys to tear each other down again, they just want Cena to be a sad underdog.

Punk/Taker is a big ol' dud -- it's not desecrating the memory of Paul Bearer, it's desecrating the memory of the Undertaker's last six Wrestlemanias and Punk's last six months as the best heel in wrestling. They owe us a great match to make up for it.

The goal of Del Rio and Swagger should just be to have a good match and injure Del Rio for a Ziggler cash-in. The most exciting thing about Raw to me was the flickering tease of the Dolph Foundation holding all the belts.

I don't understand why Jericho's going over so much.

It's just priority stuff. Jericho is going to lose to Fandango so they want Jericho to have momentum when he makes him. Cesaro's not on the card (because... uh) so he's expendable this month. And they fed him some wins before that since he'd just put over Swagger twice.

The only thing that bugged me about the Undertaker/Punk stuff at the end was that they really did make this feud entirely about that urn prop.

Now I wonder if they're going to work the whole finish of the match around them struggling for the urn to deliver the decisive bonk of the deathblow.

The only thing that bugged me about the Undertaker/Punk stuff at the end was that they really did make this feud entirely about that urn prop.

Now I wonder if they're going to work the whole finish of the match around them struggling for the urn to deliver the decisive bonk of the deathblow.

First - we're not going to get a great match. Not a technically great match, anyway. It's going to be overbooked (in a good way) and will have some of the most tense near falls in any match in recent history. It will have the most heat of any match on the card.

My view is that the urn stuff is over (symbolized by what Punk did with it last night). The whole point of this match now is for Taker to finally do a proper one-knee tribute to Bearer uninterrupted. He'll do that after knocking Punk unconscious with the Tombstone.

Here's the thing, though. The whole buildup to this match after Bearer passed has been an amazing experiment to determine how Punk will be treated by the crowd at Mania. After everything Punk has done, he is *still* going to be heavily cheered over Taker, and that can't be what WWE wants. If WWE didn't care about crowd reaction, the buildup would've been weeks of pipe bombs, which would surely have been cheered. They did *everything* imaginable (given the cricumstances) to have the crowd turn on Punk, and it didn't work! And they're going to be book the match from the get-go so that the crowd turns on Punk. I envision something like Heyman coming into the ring immediately after the opening bell to slap Punk, in an effort to get Taker DQ'd, only for the ref to exercise a judgment call and send Heyman away.

My point is that, while stupid to some, this buildup had a very specific goal in mind.
