Hide and Go Seek The Walking Dead style. "Prey" was a pulse pounding nail biter of an episode that I was totally caught up in at the moment until I realized at the end almost nothing was accomplished. Why, by the time the credits rolled, everything was pretty much right back where it started. Worse off even.

"Prey" sold us on two major happenings: Andrea bailed on Woodbury and ran through the woods like Red Riding Hood going to Grandma Rick in prison to warn him Governor Wolf reneged on their deal and is going to kill them all. Meanwhile, Tyrese and Friend and Not Friend and Not Friend's Son found out about the Woodbury Walker Pit and the plan to sic them on the prison folk when they meet up. Someone mysterious (Milton) torched the Walker Pit, seemingly ending that threat. Except no, all the Governor had to say was "Round up some more Walkers" and well, there'll be more Walkers so torching the pit didn't accomplish much.

Meanwhile, there's Andrea. Disarmed by Martinez, she absconds from Woodbury armed with only a little knife and is chased by Walkers and The Governor. The Governor must have Andrea GPS implanted in his eyepatch because he knew where she was and where she was going to be. Granted, he's in a jeep and can cover more ground than she could on foot, but he somehow knew every place she would head before she knew she was going there.

Andrea tries to hide out in an abandoned warehouse factory or something filled, of course, with Walkers. She does a good job evading the Governor, who made as much noise as possible from whistling a creepy tune to smacking his shovel all over the place - though the Walkers only attacked when it was dramatically convenient. Andrea finds a stairwell full of Walkers and sics them on the Governor, coldly watching him swarmed by them before she escapes. That was cool. It's curtains for the Governor, right?

Nope. Because right when she gets to the Prison, there the Governor was to tackle and capture her. Come on. That's bullshit. The Governor is practically super human now. (I did like Rick sort of seeing it but then shaking it off as another of his delusions.) The Governor drags her back to Woodbury while claiming she was still lost in the woods and no one saw him smuggle her into his secret torture cave, where he built his Evil Torture Chair complete with all the sharp, stabby metal tools for torture as if he was Lisa Simpson's dentist or the doctor who operated on Jack Napier after he fell in the vat of Axis Chemicals.

In the end, we see Andrea strapped in the chair that the Governor meant for Michonne. Maybe he'll build another Torture Chair so they can be the Torture Sisters side by side. But hey, at least - AT LEAST - the Governor didn't build his Torture Chair with stirrups. Although Phillip does have a speculum among his toolkit so he's thinking along those lines, apparently.

Man, I remember when this show was about fighting and surviving against zombies. The zombies are such a non-entity in their own show, the Governor can kill or escape a herd of them off camera.

In other news, Tyrese suspects foul play in Woodbury (because Andrea flat out told him the Governor was evil) but he doesn't want to leave the town because it's still better in there than it is outside. Plus Milton is pretty much against the Governor now and the Governor knows he is, but no one's laying their cards on the table.

So where are we after this episode? Still gearing for war. Exactly where we were when it started. Except Andrea, she's worse off.

Recapping Note: Changes in my schedule reduced my recapping on The W. This recap is a one-off. Generally, I'll only be recapping the rest of Arrow's season and Game of Thrones season 3.

Apparently, I am the only one who found it entirely plausible that the Governor escaped the zombies (which was also accomplished be several people - Merle, Carol, Andrew - all less clever than him) and allowed her to tire from running all night while laying in wait. Sure - he probably should have grabbed her before she got within site of the prison, but DRAMA!!!

Milton has turned on the Governor as well. And Tyrese and his group are entirely fractured, with Tyrese also suspecting that not all is right in Woodbury. I think you're not giving credit to a lot that happened in this episode.

This is a fair criticism of the show. The Walkers are definitely coming across as more of a 'manageable threat' and less of an actual one. From what I've read, the 4th season will fix some of this.

So my biggest complaint about this season was that the Governor was a pretty nasty guy from the beginning (we knew, at least) and that they really missed out on a 'big reveal' moment where the the level of his depravity would be made clear. That reveal of Andrea in the torture chair was it. I really didn't see that coming until they actually showed it.

The segments before and after the opening credits were horrible. The writers and directors mistakenly think we care about Andrea or Milton. There is no suspense in scenes where they confront the Governor because the cool heel/dumb face dynamic makes us instead root for the Governor. Andrea can't move five feet in an old warehouse without knocking something over, and Milton gives himself away immediately. For these reasons, the characters should be dead by now. It makes the Governor look dumb for not removing them as impediments.

Tyrese is the best candidate to kill the Governor. He retains his pre-walker kindness and optimism toward his fellow man. He represents the old world passing sentence on the new world's would-be-kings. Rick is barely better than Phillip, but he's not asking for Michonne and setting up up an Eli Roth room.

I liked the silent moment with Rick on the tower. Of course he'd dismiss peripheral movement. He sees things. Stuff. Things.

A placeholder episode, but a good one.

To those who thing that the zombies aren't factoring in enough, I'll just say "The Walking Dead" is not referring to them.

Thanks for putting into one sentence what I've been trying to say since November! When Rick brushed off Lori, earlier in he season and said "thank you for what you did for the group", it kinda' illustrated this point.

I'll talk to other fans and say: "see, I think the heroes the ones who're, figuratively, dead". The response I always get it: "no, I don't think they're all dead or in purgatory or anything. It'd better not be like the last season of LOST"

For this episode, when Andre sicc'ed the walkers on the Gov, I was a little bummed, since that would've been a cool way to kill him off. Yet I knew that "There are Only Three Episodes Left" and that ruined the suspense. So I wasn't surprised when he showed up, five minutes later, apparently no worse for wear, save for a few scratches. Sorta' the Walking Dead's equivalent of losing a Monster Truck Brawl and falling off the roof of Cobo Hall.

To add to that, in a world of diminishing resources & supplies, zombies aren't the biggest threat to survivors, other survivors are the biggest threat.

In Tyrese's eyes, Rick is borderline insane. He met him once, and Rick fell apart seeing Lori. The Governor has the benefit of initially being sociable and hospitable.

In my eyes, Jesus, Rick, you can't even debate turning over Michonne. That's not even something you ask Herschel to help you decide. The episode with Morgan underscored how much those two men have changed since the world ended. He repeatedly ignored that episode's hiker and ended the episode by scooping up the backpack after he was devoured. He let the walkers solve his problem, if that's what you call someone asking for help.

I am ready for this season to wrap itself up. It would be best if they shorten these seasons I don't want to go over all the things that bother me and takeaway from the show, but they become more glaring as the season drags on.

He's still about 80 steps shy of holding walker fights, keeping a zombie head aquarium, lovingly brushing dead Carl's hair, threatening to kill babies and sleeping with Andrea though. Rick's a good man struggling to stay upright in the new world, whereas the Governor is reveling in the power and cruelty that the apocalypse allows. I thought the backpacker thing in the Morgan episode was the whole point - Morgan opens his eyes to what he's becoming, and he scoops up that pack precisely because he does care about what he let happen, not because he's cold to it.

And that means he's dangerous. If Rick would rather bear the burden of the dead than trust the living, no one is safe.

Rick set down the law to establish the Ricktatorship. The Governor has done the same. But the Governor's obvious (and vastly more worrying) cruelty may be from stir-craziness. He's had the luxury of minding his zombie child and creating a TV room with heads and aiding Milton's experiments on walkers and setting up WalkerManias to keep the town entertained.

Back to my point, Tyrese hasn't seen what we've seen of the Governor. As far as TYRESE is concerned, Rick has shown nothing to trust.

You're conveniently forgetting the number of people Rick has trusted - or at least given a chance - that have nearly gotten him and/or the entire group killed. That includes the man he once called his best friend.

And to my recollection, Michonne and Carl were both pretty on-board with leaving the backpacker behind. And I seem to recall Michonne also being pretty adamant that Morgan wasn't worth the trouble and Rick insisting that they help him.

So the real question is who lives and who dies over the last episodes?

I think the governor, Milton, random henchmen and the new guy and his son all bite the dust

From the prison, there has to be some surprises so I will say Herschel, his other daughter, Merle and Andrea.

My hatred of lori has now been passed onto Andrea. When she hears a car coming down the road, she immediately runs into the woods. Good choice. But when she is standing Ina field and hears a car, she waits to SEE the car, then waits a little more and then ducks. Had she hit the ground immediately she would not have been seen. Then in the warehouse, she has darkness of her side and the benefit of hiding. So what does she do? Wander in the dark, knock shit over and draw attention to herself. Why would she not double back out of the warehouse and either run off or steal the car? And how des she. It hear a car coming when she is getting closer to the prison? I get that the governor could track her down, but either her or Rick should have heard his car coming. And after she gets tackled, how does she not fight him off and scream? She has to know that as soon as she gets back to Woodbury she is a goner so why not try to get attention of Rick and see if he can help?

I really like this show and when it is on, it is awesome. But it is holes like this that get me mad. It is sloppy writing. Like how does Milton get out of camp with gasoline and in disguise, past the gates and then back in after burning the walkers and no one notices? That is the shows downfall for me and the reason I get angry with it from time to time.

Life is hilariously cruel.

Hated this episode. This was the first time that I've ever been bored out of my mind watching The Walking Dead, and I really hope it's the last. With only two episodes left this season, I hope that things can pick up again and be as excellent as the episode a few weeks ago where they ran into Morgan. Woodbury/Andrea just isn't doing it for me anymore.

I'm not one to say everyone who enjoys a show I enjoy must enjoy it the EXACT same way in which I enjoy it. So I'm glad that you (I think?) enjoy this show. But man, we might as well be watching two different shows if you:

1) are rooting on the Governor;
2) think the Governor is barely worse of a person than Rick;
3) think no one cares about Andrea and/or Milton.

I couldn't disagree with you more on ALL of the above.

I concur with all of this. A show about a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies that brings out the worst in the human survivors also, perhaps not coincidentally, brings out some of the worst instincts of many people watching. Not pointing any fingers here, mind you, just my observation from what I hear from people and have seen on the Internettings.

Debate the similarities of the actions and the circumstances of those actions between Rick and Phillip all you want, but the show has been pretty clear, I think, in delineating that Rick at the core is a GOOD person and Phillip at the core is a BAD person. That hasn't really been blurred, as far as I've seen.

I concur with this too. As far as Tyrese has seen of Rick Grimes, he's a lunatic who sees things and tossed them out of the prison. To someone not privy to seeing all the things we see as viewers, Woodbury is a paradise compared to the prison or the outside world. Unless you're already affiliated with Rick's group, most anyone would do almost anything to stay in Woodbury vs. the alternative.

1. I'm not rooting for the Governor, but we're gonna have to see someone in Woodbury elevate their game substantially if they're gonna take him out. Andrea had her chance(s) and blew it. Milton prevented it from happening despite knowing exactly what kind of man he is, and no one else has been rattled enough by his designs to raise a stink.

2. I said it before: TYRESE thinks the Governor is better than Rick. How can we tell? Because he's still in Woodbury. I think Rick has become ruthless, and it's only in degrees of ruthlessness that he's more stable/reliable/likable than the Governor. One kept his daughter zombie in a cage, and the other is hearing voices and seeing ghosts. One demands the handover of a living human, and the other actually considers it. Heavy and crazy is the head that wears the crown.

3. Andrea and Milton have no respectable qualities. Despite clear signs of brutality, obsession, and cruelty in Phillip, neither would put an end to the Governor until this episode. Milton still thinks Phillip keeps Woodbury intact, and he'd rather have him in control with a modicum of civilization than risk chaos without him. Andrea is clearly dependent on an alpha to lead her around (Dale, Shane, Michonne, Phillip), and Milton is, to use wrestling speak, booked badly. They overdo his gimmick, and Governor becomes more likable IN COMPARISON because he at least projects competence and ambition. Andrea is the new Lori, and Milton is Radar O'Reilly to the Governor's evil Colonel Potter.

And now the Governor is becoming weaker because I can't come up with one reason why Milton is still alive. He had two secrets this episode and clumsily revealed both. He burned the walkers. He no longer can revive the Governor's daughter. Why isn't he in a chair next to Andrea?

I enjoy the show a lot. I love Carol. That actress has enjoyed a great character arc and has nailed every scene. I love how Carl has stepped up. I like Glen and Maggie. I'm warming up to Michonne. The Lovely Mrs. Tracker get into this show hard, but dumb writing and weak direction undermines the effect of great episodes and makes allegedly sympathetic characters infuriating.

I think everyone knew this from the pilot. It's a clever pun, but they were talking about it from season one in interviews. They have the same problem now with writing too much Human v Human drama that they had around week 76 on Herschel's Farm.

"Walking Dead" referring to the survivors or not, it doesn't change the fact that people tune in to see a show about zombies. When the zombies have become the equivalent of an annoyance for the characters that mosquitoes are, there's a problem. The show's just shifted too far in favor of the battle of Survivors vs. Survivors instead of balancing that with the whole "The dead have come back to life and are coming to eat us!!!!!"

As for who's not gonna make it past this season, Milton is a safe bet. I think Herschel and his other daughter are goners (especially if Tyrese rejoins the group and becomes the voice of reason). Speaking of Tyrese, I'm not getting too attacked to his friend and that guy's kid. Little Ass-kicker may go too, and given Carol's diminishing lack of screen time this year I have a bad feeling about her too.
