It's not 6PM EST yet, but Kotaku seems to have gotten the scoop. Here's what they're going with

- out in November
- current pricing is $429/$529 (presumably based on storage but not said, pricing is NOT expected to be announced tonight)
- online gaming goes to a XBox Silver/Gold model to some extent (much less free)
- PS4 will be accessible via smart phone or tablet
- new controller will have a touch pad in the center.
- every PS4 will come with a PS Eye.
- you can watch friends play their games from your PS

No mention of PS3 compatibility, though previous chatter has suggested the new chip they're using in PS4 would prevent any hardware emulation; they'd have to do a significant workaround of some kind, like having you register the games and stream them from online or something else drastic.

Waiting to make up my mind on this until Sony gets to tell their story. But maybe this is a good place to request what you want to see in the PS4 (assuming you want to see one), and then feel sad later when your request are all ignored?

With it looking like both PS4 and XB3 going to no-used games and/or no free online play, it looks like I'm sticking with my gaming PC full time from now on.

I have to be honest...I have no idea what it would take for me to buy a PS4 short of Sony stopping any production on PS3 games, and even then I'm not sure I'd go for it.

(The answer is probably "play a demo in the store" is what it would take.)

I watched this on my soon to be obsolete piece of hardware! I thought I would be swift and watch this on my PS3. The stream died about 30 seconds before the PS4 was announced. IT KNEW. It came back for a while and then died again. I eventually played around and figured out I could get the Italian language stream to work, so that was fun. Eventually I just used something else.

The big stuff: It's a PS4. "Holiday 2014" release. The actual case wasn't shown, and no price. It will not be backwards compatible, but you may be able to stream PS1/PS2/PS3 games. The Vita is a big part of the package. The Move even made an appearance!

The controller is basically what everyone had, but the touch pad is much larger. The entire area between the buttons is a touch pad area, with the start and buttons reduced. There's a Share button (which is another big push), a headphone jack, and controllers are indicated by an LED color. There's also a 'stereo' camera to judge the depth of the world.

The tech specs of the machine don't interest me. Sony emphasis the ability to have many different figures on the screen at the same time. They strongly pushed the idea that this was an easy system to develop for, which was the knock on PS3.

Games will resume as soon as you hit the power button. Games will be playable as soon as you start the download - they'll download in the background, but you'll be streaming the game. They'll even go as far as predownloading games it thinks you might want to buy, based on history, so they're ready to go if you decide to grab them. There's talk of a try before you buy, but no details.

The Share Button will allow you to record video at any time and upload it, and you'll be able to jump into your friends games at any time and send them messages to appear on their screen. (There's a second chip just for background tasks, like these.) They want to pull in friend lists from Facebook and uStream (for broadcasting footage.)

The PS Vita is now also just about the WiiU Controller - "our long term goal is" Remote Play function will be part of all PS4 games, you'll be able to shift from one system to another. It's going from the PS4, thru their colud streaming service, and to the Vita, so you wouldn't necessarily even still need to be in the house, just both have to be on and connected. Another goal is to make every PS1/PS2/PS3 game available thru streaming. They've been really slow on that for PS3, but I guess they won't have to repeat that work. It does sound like you'd be rebuying those games, and they're advising the cloud service is going to roll in phases.

Games announced
- Knack, a platformer (and a usual first wave system showcase)
- Killzone: Shadow Fall, a Killzone game
- Driveclub, a team based racing game.
- Infamous: Second Son, an Infamous game
- The Witness, an open world puzzle game - "a game that happens all in your mind"

- Deep Down (working title), by Capcom - a medieval/fantasy thing battle thing
- a Final Fantasy game by Square Enix - more info at E3. They also aired a cinematic demo of no particular game.
- Watch_Dogs by Ubisoft - superhero vigillante with tech powers in Chicago. Looks like a inFamous game with different powers.
macrons from sabriya
- Diablo III by Blizzard - for PS4 and PS3.
- Destiny by Bungie/Actavision - a first person shooter for PS4 (and PS3), available at launch with PS exclusive content

So, they are going to take away the good stuff and give us more interactive ways to be embarrassed on YouTube. It sounds like a good plan, I mean this is Sony what could possibly go wrong?

EVERYTHING about watch_dogs screams assassins creed to me. Im sure that they will bring the actual franchise over to PS4 but they werent exactly hiding anything with that demo. The hud, animation, aiming mechanics, and just about everything about watch_dogs felt like AC dragged in the 21st century.

The PS4 will not block the playing of used games:

Sony's Yoshida: PlayStation 4 won't block used games (arstechnica.com)

I've lost a lot of faith in the Sony over the last few years - from the credit card debacle to the slow removing of features from the PS3 (Other OS, etc) - I'm really going to need something beyond Bungie and a new Infamous game to keep me. This presentation really didn't do it.

Using words that I thought I'd never say, I'm really looking forward to see what Microsoft does this year.

Sony's probably going to announce more things at E3. I'd wager they have actual console case done or close to done, but it was one of the things they held back so they could have more 'news' in a few months. And, in the same way, I'm sure Naughty Dog wants to focus it's press attention on the zombie game coming out soon, but I'm sure there will be a least a few frames of Uncharted 4. There's more coming before anyone has to put their money - or at least there better me.

Like I said to start, I've got it fixed in my head that I'm going to buy this system and I don't know exactly know why. If I was going in with a sane mind, there's not enough here to compel me to move over until at least the first PS4 price drop. I do think I might get a Vita around the same time as a PS4, instead of a second controller, if it dropped down much closer to $100 and the Remote Play functionality is as promised. There's no way I would've considered a Vita before this press conference.

This, however, is distressing news:

PSN Games will not transfer to PS4.

I understand the tech limitations of transferring games over. I also understand PSN keeps a list of everything I've ever purchased, and I do not think it's difficult or costly to give you that download free on PS4, should that game be available. This is cheap.

No mention of the any XBOX Gold like subscription system stuck out to me. The background updating idea MIGHT fix James' complaint - if you're really jumping into games right away, it should be doing those patches in the background.

Here's what I heard: blah blah blah INFAMOUS blah blah blah.

I'm in the odd position now of considering what game system to buy for my son. DolphDrew Jericho Tracker will be three this year, and the Lovely Mrs. Tracker has declared that he shall grow up with video game experience. She doesn't have it and approaches the PS3 with Lovecraftian dread.

If we had no child, I'd probably stand pat with the PS3. The games that attract me grow smaller every year (except InFamous, which I continually marvel at). But when I consider what the boy might enjoy, I lean toward the Sony product because they've done me so right since the PlayStation. We still have the PS2 and use it for Guitar Hero.

We probably won't get the PS4 when it hits the market. I got lucky getting a PS2 on release day; it still works and only became obsolete when it couldn't play certain DVDs and the Blu-Rays. But we can find PS3 stuff to start DolphDrew on games and then get the PS4 for Christmas in a few years. Just in time to then hear about the PS5.

I wonder if the lack of backwards compatibility will result in a sudden drop in PS3 game sales while people wait for the new console.

My piece of advice: Invest in a Wii U, especially if they respond to new Sony and Microsoft hardware with a price drop. You'll not only get some of the better family-friendly games out there, but you can also invest in a heck of a classic catalog through their Virtual Console service.

The WiiU deal where many games can be just played on the table controller if you're using the TV for something else turns out to be pretty handy as well.

New bummer: PS3 controllers will not work with PS4s. (Though PS2 controllers weren't supposed to work with PS3, and I have an adapter that says otherwise.)

It's False has it right. If you have youngin's a Nintendo system is going to be best as far as kid friendly stuff goes. Sony and MS just doesn't have that large of a catalog of kiddie games.

They way I figure it: It took me over five years into the life of the PS3 for me to get the system, and I still have loads of games to beat. Keeping that in mind, I recently unearthed my collection of PS2 games from the dungeon called my garage...many of which I still want to beat. So yeah - I'm not in any rush.

I'm very curious about the controller, I admit.

I'm trying to build up a collection of good import games for my PS2, and that includes some decent PSone games I've missed, like Tobal 2...the original rocked, and I'm anxious to get number 2...
