February 20th, 6pm Eastern. "See the future." Slightly higher capacity and new color for the PS3! or I guess it could be the PS4...
I have no idea what will be in this and I think there's a chance this is upcoming generation suffers from the same problems as the most recent handhelds (good hardware but too high of a buy in price surrounded by cheap alternatives), but I personally have weirdly decided I'm getting whatever it is like a fanboy. Hopefully they unveil something which makes my decision look somewhat sound.
If the Xbox 720 isn't going to let me play all ~1,000 of my Rock Band downloadable songs, that'd make me consider not buying.
But then I might not be the target market. I sold my PSP, I haven't seriously considered a Wii U, I haven't turned my Wii on in months, and I can't remember the last time I played a game on my PS3. I have a dozen PS3 and 360 games which I've never started. I use my 3DS as a pedometer because I'm obsessive about collecting all the StreetPass hats and puzzle pieces, but I've had the new Layton since launch day and I'm about 20 minutes into it. And nobody still plays Rock Band.
I had a Nintendo rep come into my store today, and his opinion was that it was more likely the announcement would be about the PS Vita. It would be almost a year to the day that the Vita came out, and so they might just announce a smaller or different version. This might be accompanied with a price cut on the original Vita.
This guy's "evidence" that this was not going to be a PS4 announcement was that the president of Sony did an interview or held a conference recently where he flat out said that they were going to wait to see what XBox announces before they tip their hand on their new system.
But yeah, if the PS4 isn't backward compatible, that would be a major deterrent to me picking up the system.

Hold up...ONE THOUSAND?!?! Where do you keep them all? I have 160 or so (I think it is actually more because PS3 counts packs and albums as "one download".) Does the Xbox have enough storage for all those? /threadjack

Big hard drive. 320 GB, I think? 250 or 320.
To the spreadsheet! (of course there is) - 18 songs: AC/DC Live Track Pack export - 25: Rock Band Blitz - 36: free DLC - 44: Green Day Rock Band export - 45: Lego Rock Band export - 608: paid DLC (oh jesus) - 89: Rock Band Network - 55: Rock Band export - 70: Rock Band 2 export - 83: Rock Band 3
Yeah I don't think it is really time for a new system yet. I think with the relatively slow Vita sales, Sony needs to take a step back and really work on making that a viable system as a focus.
At this point, what more can they really do? I mean I can see where the Wii needed an update, and to a lesser extent the 360.
Oh god, I curse the slow loading time of the DLC every time I load up RB, hoping my wife won't realize just how much I've spent on it.

My wife is an enabler. She's been known to encourage me to buy a MS points card and then blow the whole thing on DLC in one sitting.

As is mine. On occasion, she'll buy me a PSN card, and even if there aren't games I want, there's always needless DLC. Skins for games, tables for Zen Pinball 2, stuff like that.
