I have returned from Vegas again, a slightly richer man thanks to some clever bets surrounding Colin Kaepernick, Ed Reed, and Anquan Boldin. But that's a conversation for the football thread. It's time to look at this year's crop of commercials!
THE GOOD -I wouldn't have guessed that my favorite commercial would go to Oreo, but the library "cookie vs. cream" argument was absolute gold! In fact, I'd say it was about as gold as a golden Oreo. Mmmmmm...... -The Red M&M sings Meatloaf! This got a huge laugh from where I was watching the game! -The Audi prom was a pretty badass spot. And be honest, you wish you could have pulled that off at your prom, too. -Doritos Goat 4 Sale. I got a big laugh out of this one, too. -Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen pitch Samsung. Absolutely hilarious dialogue from two of the best. Bonus points for the random LeBron James cameo to pay it off.
THE BAD -I need to rename this section from "The Bad" to "The GoDaddy". -Gangnam Style Pistachios. This song needs to go away already. -Bud Light. Ok, Stevie Wonder was the logical payoff to the season-long "Superstition" campaign, but I'm not looking for logical with my Bud Light ads. Bud Light used to be a safe bet for a good, funny ad, but this entire season has been a miss for them.
THE UGLY -Model Matthew Terry sells Calvin Klein. These male underwear ads just seem so...out-of-place during the Super Bowl.
THE ROCK -The WWE Champion shills for...milk. It's one of the oddest spots in recent memory, but it was a LOT of fun, too! Rock casually punching the alien to end the commercial was a hoot!
THE MOVIE TRAILERS -Oz the Great and Powerful doesn't show us anything that we haven't already seen, but it's still on my must-see list. -World War Z looked really solid from where I was sitting. I grow slightly more intrigued. -Fast and the Furious 6. Good lord, will someone put a bullet in this franchise already? -Star Trek Into Darkness. We got the first look at the villain with everything else left deliciously vague. I'm VERY excited for this one! -Iron Man 3. Probably the most disappointing one for me. A criminally short trailer telling me to jump on Facebook for more. Not good at all.
That's all I got, since I'm feeling REALLY exhausted. Debate amongst yourselves and I'll be back next year!
David Letterman's spot failed to meet the high expectations set by his previous two spots.
Everyone wanted me to start speaking with a Jamaican accent after the Volkswagen ad, but I told them it only worked with the New, New Beetle and not with plain old New Beetles.
No shock that the Showgirls won the Coke - they were up against three teams of dudes.
Was Oprah paid in Jeeps?
Maybe just me, but I find Paul Harvey's speech to the FFA a rather bizarre way to sell Rams.
Clydesdales ad did not make me cry
No real Hall of Famers this year, sadly.
I think my favourite was the Tide ad featuring the salsa stain that looked like Joe Montana.
Kudos to the crack Oreo social mediaists for the best on-the-fly response to the power outage:
An obvious joke, but nonetheless they took advantage of the opportunity and didn't have to spend four million on thirty seconds to do it.
EDIT: Also, I let out a zesty "Hashtag." every time an ad ended with a God-awful hashtag that nobody would ever use in real life - which felt like about half of the ads we got by the time it was all over.
Maybe just me, but I find Paul Harvey's speech to the FFA a rather bizarre way to sell Rams.
%100 agreed. I thought that this was going to be a meaningful spot, to the point that I looked at my wife in *happy* shock. And then they revealed the "Ram Tough" ending. What a waste.
The M&M ad with Loaf made me giggle... as did the Dorito's goat.
I feel that a lot of the commercials were lacking. The ETrade Baby was very forgettable. The Clydesdales didn't do it for me either. I hate watching promos for CBS shows, especially ones starring Kat Dennings. I'm also not an NCIS guy, so I will never appreciate Pauley Perrette. There are only so many sassy brunettes that one man can handle.
Already scanned the Star Trek trailer into my phone. The Iron Man trailer was once again, better elsewhere. The Paul Harvey ad was both very good and everything wrong with long ads. I was hoping it was something to do with farmers. I'll go with the Samsung ad, because I like it when actors tear into each other.

Good 1) Oreo 2) The hyundai getting together the football team spot 3) M&Ms 4) Bob Oedenkirk! 5) Amy Poehler's Best Buy ad was amusing
Bad 1) Go Daddy had a good commercial with the international same idea ad. They had a horrible one with Bar Rafaeli 2) Kat Dennings pole dancing to sell a comedy show. I know this is a guy day and she is very attractive but it seemed kind of demeaning. Let her be sarcastic and funny. 3) The borderline racist VW commercial 4) Bud Black...the beer named after an '80s baseball player 5) Nothing really new in any of the movie trailers
Also that Paul harvey and Clydesdale commercials seemed a bit heavy handed
(edited by Doc_whiskey on 4.2.13 0648) Lisa: Poor predicatble Bart, always picks rock Bart: Good ole rock, nothing beats that
I missed almost the entire first quarter...so there wasn't a new G.I. Joe:Retaliation ad? I did see Dwayne prove he loves milk more than Kurt Angle ever did, and that crazy Fast & Furious 6 trailer.
You really should check out the "extended look" at Iron Man 3 on Facebook...
I thought the Coke racing ad was great. It was fun and funny without being obnoxious or overly cutesy or clever.
Yeah...that Paul Harvey ad...again, if it was going to be for a Farm Aid-style organization, it would've been great. Instead, Buy Moar Jeeps!
- Doritos daughter/dad/dad's friends commercial - Taco Bell spot with the elderly folks - Cars.com ad with the car-buying process being "too easy" - Hyundai's "come back when you have a team" - TBBT's Kaley Cuoco as the Rav4 genie - Kia's "Space Babies"
Seeing The Flaming Lips on a Super Bowl commercial made me feel old and depressed.
I'm a total whore for the Fast and the Furious series, and loved the Fast & Furious 6 trailer. Also loved the Star Trek trailer.
M&M's spot was awesome.
Kia Forte spot with the robots was awesome.
The bad? Taco Bell (nothing sells Taco Bell like an elderly foam party), Go Daddy's enhanced sound kissing thing, and Samsung's god-awful never-ending spot with Rudd and Rogen. Made me embarrassed to be watching it on a Samsung TV.
I watched the game online for the first time this year, so we only got the same 4-5 commercials all night long:
Samsung Galaxy ad where the woman bums the sales report from her co-worker then takes credit for doing it herself ("I *WILL* keep up the good work"). This one played every break.
Taco Bell add where the dude walks around with his baby strapped to his chest while "I love it when you call me big papa" en espanol plays in the background (played every break)
Racing across the desert for Coke ad (shown almost every break)
Samsung add where Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan pitch their ideas to the Samsung exec and LeBron makes a cameo via tablet (only shown once)
(Beer?) ad where Dieon Sanders wears a disguise and gets drafted #1, I guess to prove to a woman that he used to play football? (Only shown once)
Lucky couch (Beer? Soda?) add with Stevie Wonder and the hot chick from Columbiana and she played Uhura in the Star Trek movie. Zoe something. I cant spell her last name. (only shown once)
That dumb ad for deodorant where the dude folds the hot girl's panties at the laundry mat (shown every break)
Those are the ones I remember. Maybe I forgot a couple. So where can I see all these other ones everyone is raving and/or complaining about?
I enjoyed the ETrade baby ad, mostly for one picture in particular. One picture had him as a captain of a boat, with the boat in the background having crashed onto the beach. The baby's expression was so funny I about died. I didn't even care about the rest; it was that one shot that had me laughing.
As a fan of the 40 Year Old Virgin, I enjoyed the Seth Rogen/Paul Rudd Samsung commercial. The oreo one and the Kia commercial were also great.
Yeah, the Stevie Wonder ads were so terrible, and took way too long to get to their point. The Taco Bell ad as well as the beer commercials (Black Crown, Sapphire) were bad.
But yes, the best of the lot was the Joe Montana stain commercial. So, so great.
"Put on your helmets, we'll be reaching speeds of 3!" "It was nice of you to give that dead woman another chance." "All right, look alive everybody...oh sorry Susan."- MST3K: Space Mutiny Click Here (facebook.com)
Man, everyone I talked to LOVED the freakin' farm ad. I thought I was an a-hole for thinking it was pointless.
BUT it is my understanding that it was a "tribute to farmers" sponsored by Dodge, so it wasn't and ad per se. When you view it through that lens it works a lot more.

Its still an ad for Dodge using the farmers. AJ Adanda on Around the Horn pointed out the fact that America's farmers are mostly illegal which did not show up in the ad.

I DVR it, some of us work and family when we get home. I delete for space. Top Gear returns tonight.
