In response to my love of the Super Giant Ninja, Mr. Boffo writes: Sadly, Wikipedia says this is the final appearance of Super Giant Ninja.

Use the spoiler tag before you post! There was no Wikipedia in 1996; for all we know he is going to be revealed as Hulk Hogan’s Secret Weapon at the Clash.

Regarding Jim Duggan and VK Wallstreet running in on Bubba/Arn, BigDaddyLoco asks: Wait, why was this happening? I am assuming there was a feud here somewhere, but I don't remember it. It wouldn't shock me if these were just random run ins like the old THQ wrestling games on Nintendo 64.

It may as well have been booked by the makers of WCW/nWo Revenge. Bubba and Duggan were in the midst of a feud and Wallstreet/Bubba were loosely aligned, but the run-ins absolutely felt like the bookers choosing a couple of guys and having them get involved. I’m kinda hoping this starts happening on every edition going forward. “Wait a second, that’s Steve Armstrong! And he’s helping Masa Saito against AKI Man! THQ won’t like this!”

Stefonics writes: Excellent Eddie Murphy/Mr. T reference. I love these recaps so much.

No you don’t.

There was also far too much discussion about Mongo McMichael that I will not be quoting. Mike Ditka and Jim Belushi was plenty, thanks.

THIS ... is WCW Prime.

CHRIS CRUISE is singing Happy Birthday to WCW Prime, with DUSTY RHODES providing acoustical backup, to a backdrop of balloons the size of One Man Gang. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Now, unfortunately, my copy is pretty much the only “traders” copy that’s floating around these days, and it’s missing half the show. Lost matches include Hugh Morrus vs. Scott Sandlin, Arn Anderson vs. Bart Sawyer, and Masa Saito vs. Buck Quartermaine. If you REALLY need to know who won those matches, I’m sure there are much finer and more detailed reviews out there who would be happy to share the results with you. We’ll assume the latter opponent won each of the above, and the Saito/Quartermaine match was just a hair under 5 stars after a gruelling bloodbath in which each man developed a new respect for one another.

DEAN MALENKO vs. JOHNNY SWINGER

Cruise tells us that Swinger feels like he has “The Stuff”. Unfortunately for Swinger, he’d lose it to Marcus Bagwell later in the year in an untelevised house show and never recovered. Malenko works over Swinger with about 13 of his 1001 holds, hits an overhead belly to back suplex, and starts to weaken the knee. Johnny Swinger hits a flying crossbody off the second rope, but can’t follow up because his knee is a wreck. Tigerbomb leads to the Texas Cloverlead, then Swinger is flipped over into a side surfboard with his shoulders down for the Malenko win at 3:58. **

I usually ignore the WCW hype pieces with Gene, but the spin machine is working overtime here. Hogan and Giant have been booked for Superbrawl, and here’s Gene: “I recall back in the late 80’s, Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant had some classic battles. Now Andre’s legacy continues the war against great WCW Superstar, Hulk Hogan.” You keep it classy there, WCW.

THE NASTY BOYS cut a promo to hype their return (where did they go?) – and challenge the Public Enemy.

THE ARMSTRONGS vs. CHRIS BENOIT and BRIAN PILLMAN (in the Match Of The Week)

Benoit’s owns the Match Of The Week slot for the second week in a row; whose wife was he banging? Steve hiptosses Pillman, who immediately starts claiming his hair was pulled. Referee tells him to shut up, so Pillman throws a couple of chops at the big man, and gets the snot beat out of him in retaliation. A dropkick sends Pillman spiralling to the outside, where Benoit offers him words of encouragement. Back in, Pillman offers the hand of friendship which the fans scream “NOOOOOO”, so Pillman stops to scream at them to shut the hell up and offers it again. Armstrong takes it and slams him, before tagging in Scott. This seems like an opportune time to see what Ed O’Neill is selling, or perhaps purchase “The Art of Cabinet Making”. No, I’m not making this up.

Back from the break, Benoit is backdropped to the outside by Scott which would seem to be a DQ, but apparently this match doesn’t fall within the same rules that every other match does. Pillman goes up to surprise attack, but Steve catches and crotches him, making him ride the top rope like a champion bullrider. Benoit works over Steve, and Pillman’s had enough time to recover, so he tags in. Steve gets choked out in the ropes, where Pillman holds his head and screams “SAY HI TO MOM!” Cruise: “Is he coherent? Is he conscious?” $1 if you can answer whether or not he was talking about Steve Armstrong or Dusty Rhodes. Pillman bites Steve’s eye, which gets him all fired up, but Benoit tags in and powerbombs him. Pillman heads up, and hits a big splash ... right onto Steve Armstrong’s knees. Hot tag is made to Scott, and Horsemen eat punches all over the ring. He goes to finish on Pillman, but Benoit’s the legal man, and Benoit casually slips in behind Scott with a Dragon Suplex for the win at 8:53. That was great fun, with the Armstrongs selling their rears off for the Horsemen – though Steve looked like a chowderhead just watching his brother get pinned. ***

And that’s that. Unfortunately, the missing content leaves me without much, but we have the Clash of Champions tomorrow, that comes with the reveal of Hulk Hogan’s SECRET WEAPON. So we’ll see you then!

Ah, so that is where it all started. This was a terrible feud that felt like it went on and on and on ... and on every show to boot.

Johnny Swinger was one of those guys I always thought could do something, and then he got a chance in ECW but was overly roided up and I realized that I was probably wrong.

You've majorly peaked my interest about the SECRET WEAPON.

My prediction: RoboCop. He's got a history involving fighting the Horsemen.

"Weweese the Secwet Weapon!"

"Release the weapon!" "Release the weapon!" "Release the blasted weapon!"

Scott Hall made a snarky comment on-screen to The Giant a couple years after this show: "Are you really Andre's son?" Giant glared at him and replied, "Don't go there."

"I'm sorry, I'm not much of a hugger."
"Not yet you're not."

Sadly, I did watch that Smackdown with someone who isn't a wrestling fan. It probably would have went well without the repeated stink faces. The mistake with Eddie and Chavo went ok, but Benoit's was hard to explain.
