I do enjoy me some QT, but that's not to say I'd consider myself a fanboy. Most of his stuff is pretty great, or at least good. That said, I bloody loved Django Unchained. It's just damn good fun, in Tarantino's typical over-the-top, beautifully stylised way.
I can't recommend it enough. If you're not a QT kinda person, I wouldn't say this will sway you, though.
My full, spoiler-free review is up here (londonfilmfanatiq.com) for anyone interested.
This movie is flippin' awesome. For all the hype that DiCaprio and Waltz were getting for their performances, I actually thought the best role went to Sam Jackson --- what a tremendous, layered character.
Random weird Tarantino quirk: James Remar playing two different characters in the film, seemingly unrelated to each other.
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball
It was fantastic, but I really don't see what all the controversy is about. I was seeing shit like this 30 years ago.
You'd think people today had never seen a Fred Williamson movie, or a Rudy Ray Moore movie. Shit, I bet just sitting through the trailer for Boss Nigger would give Spike Lee a heart attack.

Has your friend never seen What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
DiCaprio was ROBBED of best supporting actor for What's Eating Gilbert Grape? He was amazing. The fact that Tommy Lee Jones won it for The Fugitive for basically playing himself is a crime.
I really really liked this movie. Jamie Foxx was great. Leo was diabolical. Sam Jackson was slimey. I had a discussion with friends today about QT movies. My favorite is still Pulp Fiction, then Bill2, Inglourious, Django, Bill1,and Dogs. And I love all these films a lot!!!!
Just saw Django Unchained even though it was one of my most anticipated movies of 2012. I wanted to make sure I saw it when there were little to no people around and I could get invested. It honestly didn't feel like three hours. There are very few movies where the dynamic and pacing are just right where you don't think during the slower parts "wow how long is this film?" or "When do they get to action?".
The dialogue was tense and enthralling, I loved every character in this even the minor ones. The thing I think I loved the most were the different kinds of black archetypes in the film like Candy's girl Sheba, or Sam Jackson's Uncle Tom character.
The scene where Sam Jackson's character is waiting for Dicaprio's in the library and explains what he noticed at the dinner table spoke volumes to me, as the dynamic of senile decrepit judgemental sellout and decadent boastful young slave owner totally shifted into wise wary advisor and foolish young man. I could write an essay on Jackson's character those Uncle Tom personalities still exist amongst us.
I can't say enough about Django Unchained. The film was excellent.
I really liked this, although I'm not sure I would rank it as one of QT's best. He's definitely still got skills, but the plot got kind of muddy in the third act. And while the dressing on Django is 70's spaghetti western, I'm pretty sure QT must have watched The Searchers like a thousand times before he made this. A couple of the travel scenes look like they were copied verbatim.
Just watched it too. Loved it. However I'm in the same camp as many of you. Django Unchained is not his QT's best work.
It's silly the way that sounds. The movie is really really good. Better than a lot of crap that had come out over years. The movie far exceeded my expectations. It's just that QT set his own bar very high early in his career. He may never top his own success.
It's a strange anomaly that QT has going here. We say "not his best", yet if his earlier work never existed he would've garnered the same praise he gained from his early work. Maybe I'm using the term anomaly a bit loosely but Django Unchained is a hell of a testament to this man's ability with film.
Samuel L. Jackson absolutely deserved an Oscar nod for this role. His role was like nothing that he has ever played yet very Samuel L Jacksonesque at the same time.
