I lived for the last 20 to 25 years in almost utter darkness of college football and now there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Even though Notre Dame settled for field goals, they still scored points and they needed everyone of them. ND's goal line stance will go down in history. Teo for Pope.

ACC laid an egg against the SEC. Clemson should have beaten a battered South Carolina team. FSU, fucking FSU slept walk though the first half woke in the third then crashed like a college student on a 48 hour study for finals session. The SEC proved their dominance and one of them is going to face Notre Dame. Standford really should be ahead of Oregon.

Deleted my thread, started it seconds after you.

It seems these teams are who I refused to believe they were. Florida, despite it's horrid looking offense at times, is one of the best teams. Those wins over top 10 foes were legit, despite me not wanting them to be.

Notre Dame really is good. Maybe not a for the ages good, but as good as anyone else in this season.

The ACC isn't up to snuff. I went into the day thinking it was at least possible for the ACC to get three wins over the SEC(okay, two) and came away realizing the ACC is what everyone else thinks they are. Not horrid at the top, but not good enough.

Oregon may be slowed at times, but they're damn good too.

The SEC will play for, and I think likely win, yet another national title, despite my new belief Notre Dame isn't as bad as I thought.

And my team....well, I'm just hopeful the next QB will be more reliable than this one. So sick of 20 yard loss spin moves and throws that make no sense from a fifth year senior.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

Here's what the BCS looks like going into championship week:

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Notre Dame vs. Alabama/Georgia winner
ROSE BOWL: Stanford/UCLA winner vs. Nebraska/Wisconsin winner
FIESTA BOWL: Kansas State/Oklahoma vs. Oregon
SUGAR BOWL: Alabama/Georgia loser OR Florida vs. Kansas State/Oklahoma OR Rutgers/Louisville winner
ORANGE BOWL: Florida State/Georgia Tech winner vs. Rutgers/Louisville winner OR Boise State/Kent State

Yup, Ducks fans, go ahead and book your tickets for Glendale. Your ranking isn't going to drop after a solid win in the Civil War, and since only 2 SEC teams can go into the BCS, you're next in line for at-large selection and the Fiesta has the first pick (and would love to take you for geographic reasons). If not for that loss in Seattle to the Huskies (which, lotjx, is the reason Oregon is justifiably ahead of Stanford) Stanford would have a fighting chance to beat Oregon out for an at-large if they lose the Pac-12 title, but with that, no way no how.

The Sugar Bowl's in quite the bind. The way I see it, it's no automatic for the SEC title game loser to get the Sugar Bowl bid, thanks to the presence of Florida. We've obviously got no clue what the bowl committee is thinking, but on the surface the Gators would seem to have an advantage over Alabama (no head-to-head, but the Gators beat A&M, the Tide didn't), but would be at an disadvantage against Georgia (the Bulldogs won head-to-head). My favorite scenario is Georgia winning the SEC title game, the Sugar Bowl committee choosing Florida, and Alabama getting to eat sh!t in karmic payback for their BCS title game bid last year that should have been Oklahoma State's, but we'll see how things pan out.

However, the biggest wrench of the week were the twin eggs laid by Rutgers and Louisville in games against inferior conference opponents (Pittsburgh and Connecticut respectively). It doesn't affect the race for the Big East's auto-bid that much, because tiebreakers would still leave the result up to the result of the two's head-to-head matchup next week (in the event of a four-way tie) or to the BCS rankings in the event of a three-way tie, which effectively leaves the result up to the head-to-head matchup result since Syracuse doesn't have a prayer of sniffing the BCS rankings with their 7-5 overall record. What it does do is open the door back up for a non-power-conference team to steal a bid. Boise State and Kent State entered the week at #22 and #23 respectively, and, well, let's look at how the bottom of the BCS fared this week:

#15 Oregon State: lost to Oregon
#16 Texas: lost to TCU
#17 UCLA: lost to Stanford
#18 Rutgers: lost to Pittsburgh
#19 Michigan: lost to Ohio State
#20 Louisville: lost to Connecticut
#21 Oklahoma State: lost to Oklahoma
#22 Boise State: bye
#23 Kent State: beat Ohio
#24 Arizona: lost to Arizona State
#25 Washington: lost to Washington State

You do the math: All of a sudden, the chances of one of these two teams finishing at least #16 in the BCS standings looks positively strong, and thanks to the Rutgers and Louisville losses, that would almost assuredly mean that they'd finish higher than the Big East champion, which by rule would make a BCS berth for one of them automatic. Which one? I actually think Kent State has the inside track right now: They have a win over a ranked opponent (Rutgers; Boise failed in its attempt against Michigan State), they're unbeaten in conference play (Boise is not), and would have to beat a Northern Illinois team that has the same record and is also unbeaten in conference play to hold their position. I'm quite interested to see what the BCS looks like tomorrow to see just how possible this scenario is, but on surface investigation right now, the door's wide open (and this isn't counting the possibility of an upset win by Wisconsin over Nebraska in the Big Ten title game, which would also open the door for the non-powers), and given that the Orange is the site for the BCS National Championship Game and the teams that will play in that game, you'd have to think they'd get stuck with the party crasher.

(The victim in the event the Mountain West or MAC crashes the BCS? The Big 12, which would be stunning in the case of Kansas State, since with a loss against Texas, the possibility that they could go from #1 in the country to crashing out of the big games altogether in a matter of two weeks is very real. My money's on the Wildcats getting things together though, which would make Oklahoma the likely victim - but, of course, they're only in position to be the victim due to Florida State and Clemson's failures against SEC competition and their own escape job against Oklahoma State, so they're in no position to complain.)

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

This is one of those years where you don't need a plus-one national title game. Notre Dame was the only (eligible) unbeaten who played a legit schedule? Give them the championship.

Also, just for sh!ts and giggles, here's how things would probably look if unbeaten Ohio State wasn't ineligible and had the other berth in the national title game against Notre Dame:

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Notre Dame vs. Ohio State
ROSE BOWL: Stanford/UCLA winner vs. Nebraska
FIESTA BOWL: Kansas State/Oklahoma vs. Oregon
SUGAR BOWL: Alabama/Georgia winner vs. Rutgers/Louisville winner
ORANGE BOWL: Florida State/Georgia Tech winner vs. Alabama/Georgia loser OR Florida OR Boise State/Kent State

Yes, that's right, there would be a real possibility of the SEC getting squeezed out of a second BCS bid by the non-powers. The Fiesta would still take Oregon for proximity reasons, and the Sugar can't match SEC teams against each other, so the Orange would be at the mercy of the rulebook to see if they could select a SEC team with the last at-large bid. (The choices for the Orange would go as: 1) Alabama vs. either ACC team, 2) Georgia vs. Florida State, 3) Florida vs. Georgia Tech - I doubt they'd want to repeat a rivalry week matchup.)

Notre Dame may just be a team of destiny, especially when you consider:

1) Tommy Rees gets arrested in the offseason, opening the door to Everett Golson, who is definitely the biggest running threat at QB Notre Dame has had in my lifetime.

2) Rick Reilly and the national media debate Notre Dame's "relevancy" since they haven't done anything of note in nearly 30 years. Notre Dame starts the season unranked, but ends it at #1.

3) Stanford gets hosed on an overtime touchdown, keeping Notre Dame undefeated.

4) Pitt's kicker misses a chip shot field goal in OT, Notre Dame scores on the next possession, remaining unbeaten.

5) Alabama, Oregon and Kansas State lose in a two week period, leading to Notre Dame being #1 in the BCS.

6) Matt Barkley, who has torched Notre Dame in his career, misses the season finale with an injury. Backup QB does well, but makes game changing mistakes. Notre Dame wins.

As for the National Title game, I'm not opposed to playing Alabama or Georgia, I just don't think anything can end this magical Notre Dame run. When it's your year, it's your year.

Don't forget the bogus 4th down defensive pass interference against Pitt in the 4th quarter. Should've been Pitt ball up 14 points, instead ND scored a TD on the next play.

Florida is a lock for the BCS because they will be an automatic qualifier with a BCS ranking of 4 or higher. The loser of the SEC championship is going to be out of luck.

In terms of luck: except for the '95 Nebraska team, is there any other team that has played in a national championship game in the last 30 years that hasn't had a lucky break/stared death in the face? Also, most ND fans thought that Golson would be the QB this season, or at the very least Hendrix would have the spot. Rees did not play the style Kelly favored.
Could easily argue Alabama is fortunate that they did not play any of the eastern trio of Georgia/Florida/S Carolina in the crossover games within the SEC during the regular season.
Can the Big East please be put out of my misery? Yes, West Virginia did well in BCS games for the Big East, only problem, West Virginia can't play in the BCS game for the Big East. Would actually like the see Georgia Tech win the ACC Title Game to see if the ACC/Big East match-up could be beat in the ratings by public access.

This seems to have worked out just how you thought it would. If Kent State win and UCLA loses, Kent State is sure to be top 16, and they may not even need UCLA to lose to leapfrog an inactive team. The biggest MAC championship game ever!

Actually, Florida has to move up to #3 to assure its berth. We know the winner of the SEC championship game will end up at #2, but if the loser ends up at #3 (not dropping below Florida) then they would get the automatic bid and Florida would be the ones out of luck. (And that scenario is very possible, especially if Alabama is the one that ends up losing.) The decision's out of the Sugar Bowl committee's hands contrary to what I said yesterday, but the situation is no less murky.

I didn't think I'd ever see the day when Kent State was even in the conversation for Orange Bowl contenders (outside my NCAA Football video game seasons, in which they've won many championships).

I hate the BCS system so I always root for the BCS busters. I have been cheering them on these last few weeks. FSU (or GT) vs Kent State won't be a ratings monster, but I doubt it would have been no matter who FSU (or GT) faced.

This kind of season is one that would make those of us dissatisfied with a 4-team playoff (plus those teams left out) holler about expansion to at least 8 teams. (ESPECIALLY if Ohio State was eligible, though if the Buckeyes WERE eligible then those "we never needed playoffs"-crowd would also be hollering that ND/Ohio State is RIGHT THERE.)
