WWE continued their streak of restaurant quality matches complete with 1-2-3 finishes as Kofi Kingston won the intercontinenal championship by defeating a heavily-stitched Miz with Trouble in Paradise.

The match latest through three of the show's six segments and, as has been the case for this show, was preceded by well-done "history" packages for both men which included previously unseen (or not seen for a long while) footage of both men. Kingston's included a lot of pre-WWE, pre-dreadlocked footage and several mentions of Ghana - but none of Jamiaca - while Miz' featured a variety of smart looking hats. Pre-match locker room interviews from both men, another Main Event trademark, also contributed to a nice buildup. I'm a big fan of this format as it allows fans a chance to get to know these superstars and invest in them...or meet them again for the first time. It also places the spotlight where I believe it needs to be more often in WWE - on the MATCH. This week we had an added spotlight placed on the championship, and having JBL in on colour was an added bonus, because he is a man who not only believes that championships are important, but will sell that notion to a WWE Universe who all too often doesn't get that message on RAW or Smackdown...at least, not in a serious way.

My only complaint is that BOTH times, they telegraphed the obvious commercial break by flinging one man out of the ring. Surely there is some other way to take a commercial break midmatch, but WWE are not interested in getting TOO creative on Wednesdays...and in general, I do acknowledge that I should probably be refreshed by the lack of over-creative-ing instead of annoyed by it. But I already said it, so there you go.

This show had the benefit of a full week of hype, including prominent mentions on RAW - hell, a full on preview of the main event, really, via Monday's Miz/Kingston nontitle match...which will have only served to hype up tonight's show IF the audience has been properly trained to believe that the MATCH is more IMPORTANT when the CHAMPIONSHIP is at stake - so it'll be interesting if ION has press release-worthy ratings to crow about tomorrow. They will no doubt be helped by a "rain" delay in the baseball game - unless everybody turned to Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. Somehow I doubt there's much of an intersection between those two audiences (although I am in it, given the Lynx are playing).

Again reinforcing that titles matter, another pair of interviews between the combatants after the match - exultation from Kingston and an almost stunned disbelief from Miz, who immediately demanded a rematch to get back what's "his." Whether the rematch happens on TV or at Hell in a Cell, it should be another great match between these two and I'm looking forward to it.

By the time the bell rang for the Dolph Ziggler/Zack Ryder, it was 54 after hour, so expectations were quickly lowered. Sure enough, they may not have even hit three minutes before the Zig Zag ended the match (another clean finish!) and grabbed the mic to continue the other tradition of this show: setting up next week's main event and giving us a week to look forward to it. Unfortunately, Ziggler's open challenge was answered by The Ryback. We expect that our "good to great" match streak will end at three - but would willingly submit to being pleasantly surprised if somehow Ziggler dragged a good, long match out of CM Punk's Hell in a Cell opponent.

Clearly, WWE cares about showing out and making ION happy, and while that continues, this is easily my second favourite weekly show. (The first, of course, is "WWE Saturday Morning Slam.") If you're not watching it or still can't find ION in your region (or your rabbit ears don't pull it in), there's always Hulu.

Unfortunately, "It's on Hulu" doesn't help Canadians out. We'll have to wait for The Score to start carrying it, which is too bad because it sounds like the kind of show I'd enjoy.

I lucked out. I lost access to cable a few days ago (Cablevision in the Hudson Valley area of NY finally pulled the plug if you don't have a cable box*). For some strange reason, ION is one of the 9 or so channels I still get. I agree that the rain delay probably helped get more viewers to ION (not that I have access to TBS anymore!).

I am definitely appreciating the buildup that they do to the main event match with the backstories and the history for each wrestler. I am also interested in the Ziggler v. Ryback match next week but I don't hold out hope that it will last long.

* = my landlord pays for the cable and I have a cable hookup in the wall. As I am moving in under 2 months to the Netherlands (yay!) I probably won't worry about getting a box. Not sure what I will do about Raw.

They did this on SmackDown every week when I did those recaps.

This match was tremendous, and this is what we ought to get on the 3-hour RAWs and then move that show's squashes to Ion. Miz looked strong in the loss. Kofi looked strong as a new champ, and the IC belt was prestigious once again. I loved this.

In that Raw script that leaked a few years back, they called that "crash to break" and it is more overdone than four people arguing in the ring getting booked in an impromptu tag team match, playa.

Good is, of course, debatable, but I have little doubt that Ziggler could drag a long match out of Ryback without Ryback even having to do more than usual. For instance, when Ryback hits the Meathook, it isn't hard to imagine Ziggler bouncing completely across the ring, somersaulting over the announce table and cartwheeling at least six rows deep into the crowd. Every move could be extended by an additional 30 seconds of Ziggler selling it and would probably be completely entertaining the entire time.

There are expat TV services you can subscribe to with Roku that allow you, if you can prove that you aren't in the US, to watch US based TV shows. I think its like $15 or so a month but I didn't look too hard after I couldn't qualify for it.

A Roku is under $50 and just needs a TV and internet.

This just completely made my day.....because I can totally picture Ziggler doing this.

Kofi's mic work has graduated by leaps and bounds since he was a fake Jamaican that hardly ever spoke. The Tough Enough footage was awesome with him calling out The Rock. This show was unique I liked it.

Thanks for the info - I appreciate it. I will look into it and see if it might be feasible. Here's hoping Kofi can do some good things with the IC championship.

Hmm. Got 49/54, missing only (spoiler text) from after 2000. I'm kicking myself about missing (spoiler text), but I've actually seen a couple of her title defenses.
