Sensational season opener. The Walker picking off party in the Walker State Prison yard was probably the most fun, exhilarating, feel good sequence The Walking Dead has given us yet. Man, I'd have loved to join on that Kill A Walker-A-Thon. That was awesome.
Streamlined in numbers, Rick and his Ricktatorship have spent the whole winter (time jump!) honing themselves into a smooth battle unit. I especially liked the advent of Walker Prison Guards in Riot Gear. The facemasks on those Walkers is an advantage to Rick's gang - they can't be bitten with the shields down. Then Maggie figured out how to stab them through the neck, and well...
You know life is total shit when a filthy, zombie-filled prison is a heaven-sent sanctuary for Rick's people. I like Carl being a little mini-Rick, and the little flirtation going on with Emily. Amusing interaction with Carol and Daryl too, complete with sexual propositioning. Plus T-Dog said and did a lot! (For T-Dog, that is.)
Meanwhile, Michonne and Andrea seems to have bonded over the winter, even if Andrea is sick as a dog. What is the deal with Michonne's armless Walker pets?
Lori's breakdown of what to do if she dies during childbirth and comes back a Walker and/or the baby is born already Walker was some grim, if logical stuff. We know since we've seen them last Carl and Rick have grown distant and downright unfriendly with Lori.
Much of the episode felt like a video game, but I'm cool with that since it reminded me of several similar video games I loved playing. The sequence going through the darkened halls of the prison and fleeing from the Walkers was pretty intense. It was really a matter of "Who was going to bite it". Or, get bitten. I didn't expect Hershel. And Rick went right for cutting his leg off, no hesitation. "He's bleeding out!" No shit, Rick.
I'll leave with Trish Stratus' live Tweet joke:
Seems the gang really got a leg up on the competition #TheWalkingDead
Solid opener, but I was really feeling Shane's absence. The external threat of the walkers worked to set the tone, and I know we've been promised more human enemies later in the season, but I feel that the group is going to need some new internal conflict soon. I also felt that the show was getting a little too close to the comic, which the record will show that I am against. I bet there are other people on the board who loved that aspect, however.
Great episode. Killing a yard full of zombies is good fun for the entire family. Lori's fear of having an undead baby inside her was...well sorry but that would make for an insane visual.
Carl seems to have gone through a growth spurt (makes sense) and I wonder if the creators kept that in the back of their head all along and that's the reason why Sophia (his comic book "girlfriend") was killed as he looks much more in the age group of Hershel's youngest daughter. No awkward Walt issues here.
As for needing an antagonist (in the group).. Well they just met 4 new people and who knows how they deal with them. Or how those four deal with our group.
Oh..and I was sad that they already figured out how to kill walkers through the fence. That was one of my favorite parts in the comic back then.
Ratings are incredible. (insidetv.ew.com) 10.9 million viewers, not counting the overrun, boosting Walking Dead to 15.2 million. This is a basic cable show, mind you. Most Watched Drama In Basic Cable History. It's pulling numbers networks would kill for. Amazing.

This group, finally FINALLY, is no longer stupid. They've learned through the winter.
As they ran past the prison cage, I said "stab the zombie brains. They're right there!" And within five minutes, they were. When I saw the guards in helmets, I said "go for the uppercuts," and there was Maggie, doin' it and getting happy.
Speaking of Maggie, Glen, dude, don't kiss the zombie blood off her arms. IDIOT.
Herschel (or someone) had to get hurt. They couldn't run that gauntlet unscathed.
The last few minutes were exactly what I want from this show: Trauma, gore, mortal fear, and surprise.

To me, it's not about being exactly like the books, it's about making smart decisions about what should be the same, similar and completely different.
For instance, Giving Carl a love interest is in line with the books, but transferring that over to the Hersel daughter, I don't think is the best idea. I think it'd be better to just deviate from the book and not have a love interest. Or meet up with a completely new person later.
Thanks to Johnny O, I got to see it. Loved it. The show is hitting on all cylinders out of the gate. No more farm speeches or morality, just straight beat the fuck out of zombies. The opening scene with no lines was tremendous acting.
The Wee Baby Sheamus.Twitter: @realjoecarfley its a bit more toned down there. A bit.

I really do not want more internal conflict, infighting and bickering. It was nice to see them work together for a change. I find the characters likable when they work as a team, but unwatchable and I root for them to become zombie food when they don't.

Agreed Big Daddy. That is why I like this episode so much. By now they HAVE to realize that they need to work together to survive and everything else does not matter. The pecking order is clear - it is Rick and then everyone else. He has kept them alive so far - why question him?
I did not read the comic so I have no problem with the direction. But if they asked me for one input and I got my wish, it would be for Lori's baby to be a walker, burst through her stomach and take a big chunk out of her and for Rick - knowing she will be a walker - to put a gun to her head and kill her. I have not disliked a character on ANY show as much as I dislike Lori. She needs to die.....NOW.
Originally posted by Matt TrackerAm I nuts or did Carol have two children? Why am I remembering more kids than just Carl and the girl who hid in the riverbed?
Carol only had Sophia. You're probably remembering Morales (walkingdead.wikia.com) and his wife and two kids. They split from the group towards the end of the first season.
Yes John, I must be blind. Totally missed the thread. I was thinking about it more and if you want internal conflict, you have the prisoners right there for that. Makes me wonder if, in the previews, Rick says they won't give up the prison because they spilled blood to get it, he might be referring to having to kill off the prisoners to save the place for themselves.
Herschel's"did you find your bunk?" line to Carl made me laugh out loud.
I really don't care for the Michonne and Andrea dynamic. Andrea was basically suicidal and ready to punch out last season, why should I care about her now? And, I don't read the books at all, is there a lesbian thing going on between them?
